So long story short. I retrofitted a Chinese brand aftermarket touch screen for my Rs6 C7(cmon you would expect to have a touch screen on a 2017 car, makes using android auto so much better!).
Fast forward a year or two and the screen is black one day.
Okay, maybe the cable came loose somehow.
Nope. As per the second pic, the power cable wires had snapped with all the screen flips when turning on the ignition. This is a known issue but I have not seen it break in that spot. So I blame myself for not managing the cables better when installing the aftermarket display.
So what did I learn.
The power cable has this like clip mechanism(pic 4). Wasted 4h trying to get the pins out so I could repin the cables. (Other option would be to buy the whole connector with cables and solder it on, they also sell repair kits, just Google the part nr on the connector)
When I finally realized the clip mechanism it was quite easy to get out.
Also the pins themselves are not standard. So instead of ordering them online and waiting x amount of time I decided to re use the old pins. Painstakingly reset/cleaned the pins with a knife and pliers. And luckily I was able to use them again.
While I was at it I also unplugged the display movement motor. This way I can avoid these types of failures(the motor can fail, the cable, the string etc) it's a bit of a gimmick anyways and would have it this way than have to take it apart again.
Hope this helps someone in the future. Would have saved some time knowing the clip trick
Cheers!
