I'm starting to study Balkan music and I got to this video where a teacher showcase one of the tonality types with a song that is so enchanting to my heart, but I can not figure out the name of the singer, even though he said it, but I can't get the spelling "right enough" even for Google (-;

Could anyone tell me the name of the singer?

Also, I would love to receive recomendations for Balkan folk music, but Folk with a capital f, you know? What some would call "roots" music, the laments and dances that are result of traditions and history.

Most of my searches end up resulting in very "pop like" music. But this songs the teacher is showcasing on the video,, that is the type of sound I'm looking for.

What are the most useful or important languages in the balkan region?

English is obvious because is the lingua franca of the world.

French was big at some point but I don't think it's that relevant anymore.

German is pretty important for job opportunities.

What language or languages are in demand in your country?

This question has been hard for me to answer because there is no political affirmation of Turkey being part of the balkans, however, there is some historical influence with many of the countries being part of the former Ottoman Empire and many foods/words/cultural similarities associated with Turkey. Also, 2.5% of turkeys land is located in "eastern thrace" which is on the European/balkan side.

What makes the case for or against them outside of those points? What do you think?

Not specifically a Balkan question, ik but Orthodox nations like Serbia, Montenegro, Russia, and Moldova use Julian Calendar for Easter AND Christmas? Wouldn’t it make more sense to commit to fully to one calendar for all holidays?

I am assuming that "big names" of philosophy like Plato, Socrates and Aristotle have been translated into all Balkan languages, but what about playwrights (Aristophanes, Aeschylus etc), Hippocrates, the "pre-socratic" philosophers etc?

I saw it in a meme in balkan_irl maybe a year or more ago, the song was Bosian or Serbian not really sure but it sang about being a cowboy, it seems to have disappeared from youtube were I listened it from. Do any one of you guys know it? would appreciate (the only lyrics I remember it saying something like "cowboy sam ja")

We for instance make these jokes about former president Ion Iliescu. We have many jokes about him being so old that he was Jesus's waiter at the Last Supper, that he served in the Jannisary corps during his military service, that he owns a Bible with an autograph or that he wanted to get a pet turtle but deciding not to because it's lifespan is too short.

Google it, according to a survey by the official Coke headquarters, N. Macedonia had the best tasting coke and that answer still pops up when you google it. Idk if it's outdated now, but that's a fact i've never heard anybody mention when talking about Macedonia.

I've never really had Coca cola and even if i had i can't remember the taste, plus all soda tastes the same to me, so fellow Macedonians, is it really that good, and if you had any coke in other countries, how does it compare?

It feels like from the former Yugoslav nations, it is Serbs that stand out in terms of being associated with organized crime or crime in general. You've never heard of the "Croat mafia", "Bosniak mafia" or a "Macedonian mafia", but Serbian groups are infamous all over Europe and have been for many decades. Is there a cultural element that would explain Serbs being more committed to crime and corruption in comparison to their culturally similar neighbors?

From a Swedish perspective, this pattern followed even during the 90s migration crisis after the outbreak of the Yugoslav wars, in terms of one group being more succeptible to crime.

If you listen to other countries songs

I'd be lying if I said my favourite one isn't Flori Mumajesi. Althought it might seem quite basic to most fellow albanians I'd still like to stick with him. He has such a wide range of songs from different styles and melodies. Like: Plas, Të du, Mori, Si Dikur, tallava, nallane, çun tirone etc... All these songs do not sound similar in any way. Almost all of his songs are unique and differently from most of the other artists he actually knows a lot about music.

As for most underrated I'd go for Naser Berisha. Even when talking with fans of old albanian rock I didn't find other people who knew him. He has this nice mix of ballads and rock kinda similar to another albanian singer names Aleksander Gjoka but Nasers' style is closer to rock and the albanian accent differently from Aleksander. Some of my favourite songs of his are: Do të doja, a më kujton (bjondina), himni i gilanit, prap do të kthehem etc...

And my favourite singer from other balkan is Goran Karan from Croatia. I've only recently found out about him. And being so that I do enjoy a lot the singer I mentioned earlier, Aleksander Gjoka, it's more than normal that I quickly started liking him who had a very similar type of music. He has many good songs like Lipa si lipa, Dobro ti jutro ljubavi etc... but the one that has stuck mostly with me is Ostani.
