Ok, now change the forced perspective and he the guy stand next to it. But yeah, itās big.
33
u/JKrow75 17h ago
Honestly, even with experienced handlers, thatās about as close as they want to get to one to take a picture
2
u/PhoenixARC-Real 7h ago
Yeah, but it still kinda throws off the message of the post, sure you don't wanna be right up on it, but the perspective makes it look closer to gator or small tiger levels of size, rather than the medium-size-dog that they are.

Yeah kind of ruins it for me. If it were actually big they would show it's true size. Not camera tricks

23
u/kazhena 16h ago
Please do not try to eat (or kiss?) the komodo dragon.
They're not poisonous, but testing still says no.
21
u/Jezzer111 15h ago
Komodoās have long been thought to not be venomous and most of the world has been going on this incorrect info for years, but it is now known that they do produce venom.
13
u/Thatnakedguy0 16h ago
I donāt know if it would be considered venomous or infectious because what kills you isnāt venom itās bacteria.
22
u/kazhena 16h ago
The venom doesn't have to kill you, but my point was simply that they're venomous, not poisonous.
If you bite it and die, it's poisonous.
If you get bit and die, it's venomous.
Komodo dragons are just OP and have more than one deadly mechanism, lol.
13
u/Turbo-Reyes 16h ago

Poison is ingested, venom is injected. Thats exactly it. I explain this so much to people when discussing reptiles.
3
u/tiptoemicrobe 15h ago
I believe the bacteria hypothesis has largely been rejected in favor of actual venom doing the job.
Here's one study on it: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2690028/

u/MysticFangs 15m ago
The venom kills you by not allowing your blood to clot. The venom forces you to bleed out so yes the venom is what kills you.
1
u/pervyjeffo 13h ago
"Komodo dragon venom is as potent as that found in the inland Taipan, the world's most venomous snake."
I'm pretty sure it is venom that kills you.

More poisonous than my ex-gf mouth, damn
10
u/SoupahCereal 15h ago
It's the bacteria in their mouths that will take down prey. They just need one bite and they'll follow and wait. Doesn't take long.
1
u/Seeker369 14h ago
This used to be repeated for quite a while until it was revealed that komodo dragons having harmful bacteria in their mouths was in fact a myth.
1
u/CrashAndDash9 14h ago
Yup. Itās the water the animals run to, to get away thatās got all the bacteria.
1
1
u/MysticFangs 13m ago
What infection? The venom is not like rattle snake or black widow venom. The venom of a Komodo Dragon stops your blood from clotting and this forces you to bleed out and it will kill you much faster than any infection could.

And heās talking about wrestling the dragonā¦seriously???.
Even though I think he was being facetious, he needs to stay the fuck away from this wild animal. Regardless of whether itās held in captivity or not, at its brainās primal level, itās a wild animal.
This dragon could make a meal out of OP in short-order. Actually, heād be one of the dragonās easiest meals and the āfightā would end very quickly and very badly for this young man.
15
u/Upstairs_Ad_5574 17h ago
No. No he's not talking about wrestling it..
He's talking about why he shouldnt wrestle it, just so his audience can go "oh, this guy wrestles"

u/HeldDownTooLong 16h ago
Ohhhhhā¦okā¦thanks!
2
u/Upstairs_Ad_5574 16h ago
I mean... I get it. My first thought before hitting play was, in fact, "why is he in a gator wrestling position?" Lol but thankfully, with the exception of being within licking distance, he's not that dumb.

Komodos salivate when they're hungry, while they're pretty chill when they've recently fed. This one looks chill

They are one of the most impressive animals on the planet to me.Ā Ā
So much bacteria in their mouth that scientists have gone back and forth from venomous to non venomous repeatedly since the discovery of them.Ā I say this because if you're bit and it goes untreated you are all but surely going to die of INFECTION.Ā Not a venomous wound. Quickly at that.Ā Ā
They are fucking fast enough to catch land animals, they can swimthey can climb and sometimes they use their tails as a whip.Ā Ive seen marks that they have left.Ā Very very impressive.Ā They dont look much, one of the deadliest creatures on the planet.Ā
31
u/kazhena 16h ago
They have a type of hemotoxin venom.
3
u/wvsfezter 4h ago
This is a pretty hotly debated subject. They found glands in the lower jaw of Komodo dragons that the researchers identified as venom glands, however other researchers contested these claims. The argument is that even though these oral secretions have a hematoxic effect, there's speculation that they could play a broader role and the classification as venom glands as opposed to salivatory glands could be narrow-minded. All of this is still pretty cutting edge as these findings came out in 2023
21
u/I-RateBoobies 18h ago
No its definitely venom. And you don't die from the infection you die from the venom. The venom causes your blood to be unable to clot so you bleed to death (which would cause your body to go into shock) and your BP rapidly drops which then causes a whole other set of problems.
10
u/therealhlmencken 15h ago
New science just released no venom itās crazy it goes back and forth.
Jk itās like of course once we discovered the actual venom mechanism we had the answer.

I'd be more scared to stay near a giant komodo dragon then a saltwater crocodile. At least a saltwater crocodile can't chase you down on land but these guy can easily outran a human if they want.( they have insane stamina and can run and track their prey for days.)

Still wouldnt get that close to one in a million years.

Oh cool, so the massive venomous unpredictable reptile is 15% less likely to rip his arm off in one bite. With that favorable swing in his favor, it makes total sense to stand next to it! Perfectly safe!

He is cheesing the perspective to make it look bigger. Its a pretty common cheese you see in Komodo dragon pics. especially this day and age. The biggest one on record was 10ft 360lb. Most are much smaller. Still a 5 foot dragon would absolutely kill and eat you. I've seen smaller dragons take down huge buffalo. They bite the stomach area and then follow the buffalo around till it dies from infection. Savage stuff.
1
u/ernie3tones 2h ago
Exactly this. They feed on carrion and their bite is toxic due to the amount of bacteria in their mouths. They donāt need venom to kill.

1
u/-UncreativeRedditor- 14h ago
A lot of people in the comments are overreacting. Is a komodo dragon dangerous? Of course. Will you immediately die from being bitten? No. With proper first aid and subsequent medical treatment, your chance of surviving is very high.
The bacteria in a komodo dragon's mouth can take more than a full day to kill an adult human, depending on the size of the person and severity of the bite. A komodo dragon bites its prey in the wild and follows it, sometimes for days, until the prey succumbs to infection. There is rarely anything instant about it.

We visited Komodo National Park two years ago and the tourists MOB the dragons. It's not a guarantee you will see one every day. The park rangers carry long Y-shaped sticks and tell people to stay far away from them, but people don't listen for shit.
The tour companies from nearby island like Flores rely on Komodo tourism and were striking to protest an increase in the park fees. But, honestly, the park could use more money to be better managed. There was a lot of trash around.

So much misinformation about this animal. It's not hard to use Google and why do people keep repeating myths they've never cared ro verify for themselves?
Komodo Dragon venom is dangerous because it stops your blood from clotting and this gets rid of your body's ability to heal itself resulting in the victim being forced to bleed out. A bacterial infection is not what kills the victim and the venom itself is not deadly, its the bleeding out from the venom which is deadly and you will bleed out far earlier than any bacterial infection would be able to take you out.
If you get medical help soon enough you can be saved from bleeding out. I'm not sure where people are getting this "dies from bacteria after being bitten" from...
No this is not debated in the biology community, it's verified fact at this point.
