It is true. There is a science regarding it and plenty of medicinal cannabis strains are bred for their terpene profiles, which changes the scent and taste and also the effects the weed has on you.
Anyone that knows anything about chemovars will know this is true.
Your NOSE KNOWS what your preferred terps are 90% of the time. If you smell something and think "damn that smells good" it's probably going to hit really good. If you smell something and think "that smells like fish carcass" your body probably won't react very well to it.
Everyone has different preferences though... Some people like the cheese smell, garlic, fruity, woody, etc. I've had flower that smelled straight up like a bakery (Blueberry Cookies) and then some lady told me it smelled like shit later. π
