Discussion Real-World phenomenon that happen in your world

I mean things that are so weird that they *appear* supernatural or just a writer writing stories. But the phenomenon is 100% real. In a way, you're kind of teaching people about things they wouldn't have known otherwise.

I have three examples:

  1. A character hallucinating about his home while exploring a cave under a desert. Cave hallucinations are real and you can see and hear things that aren't there.

  2. Singing sand; a phenomenon where sand falls down a dune at the perfect frequency to hum and rumble. It is creepy. I recommend checking out videos on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwZeTs2WtUU

  3. Random pillars comprised of different lengths, thicknesses, and angles. This is an example of nuclear semiotics placed into a fantasy setting.

Grey Bogs are massive wild swamps teeming with warped plantlife. They are made by volcanic activity causing natural pollution of ionising radiation. Heavily armored expeditions collect radioactive substances to be studied and exploited. Some say knights of the Cathedran Order harness its soul-burning power in their armor, making it searing to the touch to all but the pure of heart, and thricefold to the wicked. Others speculate that somewhere within the depths of the Hidden City is a Forest of Steel Trees, where a mad inventor works on a device able to set ablaze the very air itself...

u/Sov_Beloryssiya The genre is "fantasy", it's supposed to be unrealistic 21h ago

Aquaria has the Curtain of Lightning, which is Catatumbo Lightning but applies on the whole planet dividing its surface into two halves running from North to South.

Everything getting covered in a thin layer of ice, not only the ground, but the houses and even on the small branches of trees. All you can hear when walking outside is cracking from the ice shifting around on the branches. A bit of a problem that sometimes happens where I live, since some trees will have their branches break off, and occasionally a tree will split right in half from the weight.

Edit: By the way, when I say "thin layer of ice", I'm talking about something like the size of a cover to a plastic water bottle (those disposable ones) or like smaller than the hole in a tube of toilet paper roll.

Edit 2: I found this video shows a close up of some things you might see after an ice storm - https://youtu.be/O1t8MIfEK8o?si=m1kpbBq4GfeJhwXZ

On planet Taliana, during the nighttime on the sea shore, you can find something in the water glowing bright blue as the water moves around. It will glow around you if you decide to move through the water. A pretty magical sight.

In our world, it's known as Sea Sparkle. It's a species of plankton named Noctiluca scintillans that possesses bioluminescence and glows when the water it's in is agitated.

Ball lightning is sometimes attributed to the supernatural in my setting. When people see it, they might say that Garamuini (my universe's effective god of electromagnetism/lightning/weird electromagnetic phenomena) is watching them and they'd better be good!

Fairy Lightning, singing sands, breathing mountains, bog lights, ball lightning, liquefaction, resonant frequencies, bioluminescence, and lenticular clouds come to mind.
