Laura Bailey fucking rules

u/Arumhal 17h ago

Bit of a shame she pretty much had to quit social media around the game's release.

The threats were absolutely horrific. Who TF wants to hurt an actress just for a role they're playing

u/timomies 14h ago

Take a quick gander at that sub and you'll find plenty.

people can't separate the actor, it's quite mind numbing the kid who played Geoffrey in game of thrones got a lot of hate as well. Infantile behaviour

People being anecdotally unpleasant to a young actor playing a popular character like Joffrey, a universally lauded villain, is vastly different from the vitriol directed at Laura Bailey for a role that a not-so-insignificant minority despised for a wide array of despicable, bigoted reasons.

I disliked Part II the first time I played it. After a few days, I’d gotten to Seattle Day 2 with Ellie and found the premise a bit clunky, and who I was playing as felt a bit jarring. So I replayed The Last of Us and revisited Part II a year later. Now, it’s my favorite single-player game, and Abby is my favorite character. Back then, I wasn’t keeping up with gaming news and wasn’t aware of the drama. I wonder how many others had a similar experience but either gave up or read all the drama and decided Part II wasn’t worth the hassle. I bet a decent chunk of the other sub haven’t completed and have just watched reviews or playthroughs on YT. Troglodytes.

Bunch of losers

I mean, if someone threatened to rape and kill me and my child then I'd leave twitter too

It’s one thing to act in a realistic environment with regular clothing and realistic props etc. But to act this well wearing funny outfits in a brightly lit studio wearing a giant rig on your head—THAT is talent.

u/ThomasSirveaux 16h ago

Not to take anything away from their skills, but at this point they've probably performed the scene a hundred times--they're used to doing this at table reads, and rehearsals, and sitting in traffic, and standing in a recording booth.

She deserves so much better than toxic gamers. Such an incredible actor. Watching her break down in the documentary was crushing. I really wish anonymity didn’t bring out such vitriolic cruelty.

I saw Laura Bailey at the Video Game awards presenting with Aaron Paul. I take back all the Abby hate 🙏

What the fuck

I met Laura Bailey at ECCC. I told her I loved Abby and it wasn't fair how she was treated when part 2 came out. To quickly lighten the mood, I told her the most cathartic part of the game was finding former Seattle employers taken out by the apocalypse.

2

u/RandoDude124 10h ago

You mean the hospital scene?

136

u/Tiny-Application-178 18h ago

She and Ashley are besties and those morons were hating her so much! Ugh!

27

u/AloyRostSobeck 16h ago

Critical Role FTW!

9

u/boferd 11h ago

in grounded 2 you can see LB with tears falling as she's watching AJ work that scene in the chalet. that always stuck with me, she seems to be an incredibly empathetic person along with being so talented. i hope she and her family feel more peace now. i have a lot of disgust for the people who harassed her/the devs/the rest of the cast

73

u/LouieLouJr 18h ago

People love to criticize games but they do not realize how much work goes into making them; this is a cool behind the scenes.

6

u/EccentricMeat 11h ago

A lot of games you can play and easily forget how much work they take to create. The Last of Us (both 1 and 2) really makes you feel and appreciate how much work went into them.

1

u/bbobeckyj The Last of Us 4h ago

Maybe but for me this game series has ruined most others for me. I've played a lot of people's best rated games and they too often sound like the actors are never in the room together. It feels different when they're not reacting to each other.

11

u/timetravellingbadass 17h ago

Both Laura and Ashley are incredible in this game. Hope to see them in another project again soon.(expect for critical role obvs)

17

u/Prize_Celebration265 19h ago

wow I imagined the voices being recorded in a booth

13

u/notmyfirst_throwawa 18h ago

They probably did some ADR after the animations were finished

3

u/Hwan_Niggles 12h ago

Naughty Dog has been mo-caping since Uncharted 1. This isn't new

4

u/R_Scoops 10h ago

Not everyone lives and breaths videogames. Great interpersonal skills.

-1

u/Hwan_Niggles 10h ago

You don't need to "live and breathe" video games to know games these days are mo-capped. At least triple A games. Especially Sony which this subreddit is about with TLOU

3

u/R_Scoops 10h ago

I don’t really care that you’re being a bit of a dick, it’s more frustrating that you can’t seem to grasp why not everyone who plays video games would automatically know that motion capture is used in The Last Of Us II. I bought a PlayStation during Covid for the first time since the early 2000’s and wouldn’t have known what a AAA game or mocap even was. You don’t learn that stuff until you start reading about game related stuff online, which isn’t something every person who plays games does.. Idiots who think they’re clever are the worst.

5

u/Jamboro 10h ago

If you're interested you should check out the 'Grounded' documentaries they did about the making of the Last of Us games. Really cool stuff!

9

u/quirk-the-kenku "Okay." 16h ago

23

u/Steve_Dankerson The Last of Us 18h ago

Oh ffs, the BTS just broke me again and I've finished the game 3 times. Dang it!

11

u/Aya_C 17h ago

Laura Bailey is iconic. My favorite video game actor 🥰

4

u/bugdiver050 14h ago

The number of people who are still so salty about this. I absolutely loved both games. Sure, seeing Joel go like that was heart-wrenching, but the emotions it got loose in people proves it was a good scene.

7

u/bonivermakesmecry 16h ago

A lot of people are hating on Naughty Dog these days, but we should all agree that this game has phenomenal acting and music, and that next space thing they’re doing will at least have that

3

u/lonelysad1989 15h ago

is this new? posted from where?

7

u/truffleshufflechamp 14h ago

Grounded II - The Making of The Last of Us Part II

The documentary is on YouTube.

2

u/irish0451 5h ago

Laura is so freaking talented. Genuinely can't believe she's not tapped for more silver screen stuff.

3

u/Asleep-Ad9435 16h ago

Laura Bailey is really talented she did an amazing work, but Abby is a psychopath

7

u/Nathaniel-Prime 15h ago

That's a sign of good acting right there, they get even their fans to hate their character.

3

u/Top_Topic_4508 12h ago edited 6h ago

I ended up in the harry potter sub recently, and i saw a post about umbridge

saying "What a brilliant actress for making me absolutely want to kill her character" it gave me a chuckle

2

u/Asleep-Ad9435 4h ago

Yeah I totally agree she knows she'll be hated for that but she did it anyway

1

u/wankcunt62 11h ago

God Laura was so amazing!

1

u/paxbanana00 9h ago

Laura Bailey's vulnerability during that scene really made it more real.

Honestly, the fact she was crying when they brought Ashely Johnson in for her scene made it so much more raw. Laura Bailey's personal feels about her friends translated so well to Abby's rage, dissatisfaction, and pain during both scenes.

u/Imagina7ion_90 6h ago

Who are you? Guess.

Op, spoiler tag, please!

Edit: just trying to not spoil it for people, idk why yall gotta hate and downvote But cool video though, nice to see how they made it in real life, how they actually have to act it out

3

u/that_majestictoad 15h ago

Yeah seriously I don't get why you're being downvoted. A lack of a spoiler tag was the first thing I thought of too.

I get the game isn't new and most people here I imagine know what happens/happened but there are new people who might be spoiled by this especially if they're trying to avoid spoilers for the game or TV show.

A simple spoiler tag isn't some outlandish request.

0

u/Individual_Line_4295 15h ago

My thoughts exactly, thank you. I just don’t want to ruin it for people, like many people are only fans of the show, they have no clue what’s coming. For people like you and me, we probably played the game years ago, I’m just looking out for others. It isn’t that much of a request to put a spoiler tag, especially for the biggest spoiler of the entire game lol

-19

u/Cool-Principle1643 17h ago

Great game, great story. Abby sucks, team Joel/ Ellie. Hopefully part three brings the same kind of emotions.

1

u/SlurryBender Joel 9h ago

"Team Joel/Ellie"

Are you claiming a sports team like this is fucking Twilight? what are you, fourteen?

-18

u/Bearloom 19h ago

I'm fully team Lauravis, but it seems a strange choice to have both Colleen and Laura do mocap work for Abby, and to base Abby's face on Jocelyn but then have to adjust to use Laura's mouth movements.

I get what they were going for, but I think they used too much reference material.

15

u/koleke415 18h ago

They absolutely nailed this scene, so maybe they know what they're doing....

0

u/DarwinGoneWild 16h ago

What exactly were they “going for”? The process you described is exactly how nearly all video games are done these days.

-16

u/timmyctc 18h ago

Spoiler tags

-35

u/Perfect_Screw-Ups 17h ago

The most badly written twist of turns ever.

12

u/Boom-Boom1990 16h ago

After everything Joel did in the first game, you really didn't expect anyone to come after him?

-13

u/Perfect_Screw-Ups 16h ago

Expected, but not in a bad way.

4

u/omaewakusuyaro 16h ago

Cry me a river, joel got his karma and thats it.

-6

u/oikeeteeris 16h ago

What fucking karma? fireflyes were animals.....

3

u/Optimus_Prime_Day 15h ago

The most wrong opinion ever

-7

u/Perfect_Screw-Ups 15h ago

Thanks for the input.

-45

u/OGunnarS 17h ago

the dumbest scene in the game

18

u/quirk-the-kenku "Okay." 16h ago

What is dumb about it? Joel killed many, many people through his life. You wouldn’t think at least one person related to them wouldn’t have come after him??

1

u/Perfect_Screw-Ups 5h ago

Lol so did the Fireflies lmao.

5

u/DarwinGoneWild 16h ago

The dumbest comment in the thread.

-21

u/Perfect_Screw-Ups 17h ago

Right!? I mean I appreciate the work put into it but it was so foul. Laura did her best for the money I guess.
