Becoming a race engineer?
It has been my dream for a long time to become a race engineer, but i'm not sure of the best path to make it there.
For context, i am a student in the UK currently studying maths, physics and chemistry for A levels. I have a deep passion for cars and love many categories of racing from small and local touring car and GT championships all the way to F1. Becoming a race engineer is a dream of mine, but there seems to be many potential paths that you could go down to maybe end up as one but i wanted to hear what others did to make it to where they are.
If anyone can help to give me a push in the right direction or any advice in general it would be much appreciated, thank you.

GTWC Jeddah Wrap Up
Final race of the year for me is wrapped!
It was a very tough weekend for us at Jeddah. Don’t think I’ve ever walked so much in an event and yet shot so little. I mentioned in earlier posts that the good bits of the track to shoot are very far apart and the lack of access gates for us means more walking that you can imagine.
I was finally able to get up in a building today in turn 1 and the angles were amazing. I’d have loved to get even higher in the Shangri La or another hotel but we couldn’t get permission.
Besides shooting up top in turn 1, most of my race was spent in the pitlane, which is typical for me on race days. I tend to front load the race week with trackside action because teams don’t often do many live pit stops during practice sessions.
I was impressed with how the race went. We all assumed this would be a shit show on track with 20 tubbed chassis. But there very few incidents and the track provided great racing.
In terms of shooting the circuit, I would be okay if this is my only time here. I enjoyed parts of it but the logistics of getting around were atrocious. Many of turns also look the same so it led to many similar looking shots. Not the worst circuit by any means, but not one I’m clamouring to visit again. Especially after having to walk 2km to the media parking lot with all my equipment because the shuttle buses stopped running.
The media centre had everything we needed but it was very loud. There was a distinct shortage of headphones with everyone just playing everything out loud constantly. The catering crew was also working out of a side room so they’d bring these massive carts through that made so much noise. But hey, we had internet and snacks. We can’t really complain.
Overall Jeddah was a fine race weekend and the fans in attendance got to see a great race and that’s what matters.
Thanks for letting me share my thoughts here. I also have a YouTube channel where I post behind the scenes vlogs from the races I attend and I have three videos coming from the Jeddah race week.
I’m already looking forward to 2025! But now time for a holiday in 🇯🇵
