uncomplaint I am recovered from walking pneumonia!!!

Complaint my youngest kiddo is developing a concerning cough

Confession I am trying so hard to not freak out about a zero mile week and a rebuilding week at the end of my marathon plan but I might be obsessing

Celebration I got tickets to go see Des Linden and Kara Goucher do a live podcast recording on the Saturday before the Houston Marathon!! So excited to see these two ladies and I have never been to a podcast show before!!

There are many ways in which it can be positive for kids to emulate their parents. Social skills, for example, are often (but not always) better in a 35-year-old than a 4-year-old. Illness, however? You just quit imitating mommy, kiddo.

I'm SO SO SO jealous you got tickets to the live show!

I waffled back and forth for a bit because it is the day before the run but also what a cool opportunity that might not come up again! I mean, I read both of their books and they were nervous about selling enough seats in a real theater.

3

u/suchbrightlights 1d ago

I cannot imagine a better way to get fired up for the race than to be in the audience.

3

u/runner7575 1d ago

Oh, love those ladies! Can’t wait to hear about the live show.

u/goldentomato32 1d ago

They asked for folks to comment with ideas for show topics and immediately I got excited and my mind went blank. I will definitely drop a post show recap right afterwards :)

It is amazing how often that the second you have a chance to voice your ideas your mind goes blank.

u/fire_foot 1d ago

Ahh I bet that podcast will be such a fun experience, how cool that you can attend live!! And hooray for finally being less sick but sorry to hear a kiddo is now getting it ...

2

u/goldentomato32 1d ago

I have only regretted the concerts/live events I haven't attended!

I am crossing my fingers that everyone avoids the worst germs!

Complaint: i still take too long to recover after a long run. Had a 15k on monday and my legs still fatigued and only managed a measly 2k on treadmill. It doesnt hurt as such just heavy, slow and tired.

Non complaint: mondays 15k was 5 min faster than my last 15k a month ago

Another non complaint: from going a non runner, short and overweight...since April I went from a 50 min 5k to a 36 min 5k, running 2 10k races with 20 improvement between them, i ran a half marathon as my longest distance, i lost 7kg...so in 9 months I call that good progress

u/suchbrightlights 1d ago

You didn't ask, but if you're still beat up 2 days after your long run... how's your post-run fueling? Post-run protein and carbs are really important for muscle repair and recovery, so if everything else is on point, bumping these up might help you!

It sounds like you've made huge progress this year- that's something to be proud of for sure!

2

u/zeehun 1d ago

Hmmm after a long run im usually absolutely famished lol and to be honest i just eat the first thing that comes to my hand. 🤦‍♀️ be it a meal i might hv cooked the day before or just some sweets and chocolate🤦‍♀️ so i guess not the best 😅

4

u/Duncemonkie 1d ago

Are you fueling during your long run too? I’ve seen info that can help with recovery as well.

3

u/zeehun 1d ago

Yeah I have a carb gel at every 5k.

3

u/nthai 1d ago

Congrats on your progress! It takes time for your body to adjust, but after a couple of months/years your body will recover faster. Your body will be more efficient at running so you won't feel as fatigued.

Complaints: adding a calf strain to the list of nagging and escalating injuries (groin and IT band have been at it for several months already)

Confession: I haven't done much in terms of trying to treat/strengthen my existing injuries and have been piling on the miles through the pain

3

u/nthai 1d ago

IT band issues are a huge pain in the... IT band? It may take a lot of time to heal, but I can tell you, that it WILL heal sooner or later. Hope it's sooner :)

u/Shifty012 9h ago

I don't know what your schedule or race plans are but:

Maybe try taking some time off or lowering your clicks for a few weeks. Running injured increases risk of further injury or new injury.

I "snapped back" from a bad IT band injury after a solid 2 months off (maybe 10k run over those 2 months). I was able to do that with distant race plans and it being the depth of winter where I live.

I have since run 2 full years feeling 100%. Not even a tinge of an injury. Running low to moderate distances (30-40k per week) aside from a few months of ramping training up for a few half marathons along the way.

I think changing shoes coming off the 2 month break also helped a lot. My new make/model feels just right with my stride.

Rest is best if you can get it. Stay safe out there and hope your healed up soon

Complaint: My body's Christmas gift to itself is a 24-hr+ migraine that had two long rounds of aura yesterday morning and woke me up multiple times in the night. I took my meds yesterday but I'm trying not to take anymore. I've already gone over the recommended usage per week lately.

Uncomplaint: Despite my migraine, I really had such a nice Christmas. Spent Christmas Eve with a few new friends having dinner and hanging out. Spent yesterday cleaning my house, watching TV, napping, and taking a long sunset walk. Quite perfect, tbh!

Confession: I think my migraines might be due to my significant inactivity from surgery recovery. I can't prove it but I have a hunch. I did a few sun salutations and bodyweight exercises this morning and now I'm going to take another long walk. I really wanted to have a little run-walk but I don't think my head can handle a ponytail. Going to charge my watch anyway in case I feel better tomorrow!

3

u/suchbrightlights 1d ago

Oh, ugh, that sounds AWFUL. I hope gentle movement, fresh air, and sunshine do cure what ails you.

1

u/fire_foot 1d ago

Thank you. Yeah, I really had an “are you serious?” moment when the first aura started yesterday morning, five minutes after waking up while making coffee. It’s still going today but I’m happy to be moving and gently doing stuff despite it.

3

u/CF_FI_Fly 1d ago

Sorry, migraines are awful.

My friend who is a pharmacist recommended Magnesium to help the aura ones and it's been a game changer for me. (I hate unsolicited medical advice, so please ignore if this doesn't help you.)

3

u/fire_foot 1d ago

Thanks! I do take magnesium daily already and it helps somewhat. I read recently about people being helped also by riboflavin supplements, so that might be something to look into …

2

u/goldentomato32 1d ago

I am impressed you were able to do yoga with a migraine! I can barely handle yoga on the best days. Hope you feel better soon

1

u/fire_foot 1d ago

To be fair, it was very half hearted and I couldn’t really do down dog because my head throbs if it’s even remotely upside down, but I tried!

8

u/sandytrufflebutter 1d ago

Complaint, I herniated a disc in August. I have done this before but this is the first time I’ve gotten a proper diagnosis. I’m still not back to running without it being 50/50 walking at a pace much slower than I’m used to. It sucks.

1

u/Equal_Barracuda_8427 1d ago

Stay strong you got this

14

u/Miserable_Emu5191 1d ago

Complaint: it is too cold to run. Also, my house is not self-cleaning.

Uncomplaint: I got some Trailheads mitten gloves for Christmas but I can't tell if they are too small or my hands are just a little swollen at the moment.

Confession: I've enjoyed being lazy the past few days!

7

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago

Wouldn’t a self cleaning house be amazing!

I’m guessing they are too small everytime I have an issue like that the answer that always eventually comes back is that they are too small

3

u/Miserable_Emu5191 1d ago

They might fit better if I laid off the chocolate and wine. But that isn't likely to happen so I will exchange them for a bigger size. LOL!

3

u/GorgeousGeorgeRuns 1d ago

Very appreciative of a surge of warmth here on the east coast this week and next - solidly in the 40-50F range after weeks below freezing

3

u/KesselRunner42 1d ago

Yeah, hoping the warmth (and some rain) clears out the residual ice before any more rounds of wintery weather! Was good enough already to do a speed session this morning in my regular pavement runners and not be appreciably slowed down or too concerned.

4

u/suchbrightlights 1d ago

I do not need the robots coming for my job or doing creative writing. I need them cleaning my house and doing my laundry so I can do my own creative writing. Why don't we have the self-cleaning house yet?

How are you feeling?

7

u/ac8jo 1d ago

Uncomplaint: No work. Only running, eating, bass guitar, and tv/movies/sports.

12

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago

Complaint: it’s cold!

Complaint: it’s going to rain this weekend and melt all the snow!

Uncomplaining: I finished my book! Onto the next book!

Uncomplaining: was nice to get a longer than normal run in yesterday!

3

u/runner7575 1d ago

Do you have your next book picked out?

So cold.. I want to run this morning but it says feels like 20. Ugh

3

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago

I’d take 20, it was -5F here this morning

I have my next two books already picked out, I keep 4 books in my LFL book exchange rotation (used to be just two but my partner occasionally decides he wants to read one so I upped it so he doesn’t hold up the que and so I can often wait till I’m on a trip to change them out as I like to hunt them on vacation runs) so next is “all the light we cannot see” which will be followed by “welcome to the god damn ice cube”

2

u/suchbrightlights 1d ago

I didn't get far through All The Light We Cannot See, but I did enjoy Welcome to the Goddamn Ice Cube (has someone given you the trigger warnings on that yet?) Have you read Blair Braverman's fiction book Small Game?

1

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago

Nope, no one has given me trigger warnings for that book yet but it’s ok I generally don’t read trigger warnings anyways, otherwise the stress of knowing something awful is going to happen just adds more on top of the feelings from just reading it blind.

I haven’t read the other book.

2

u/suchbrightlights 1d ago

I recommend Small Game! It’s a thriller about a survivor show gone very wrong.

2

u/fire_foot 1d ago

I didn't read the book but thought the TV series of All the Light was pretty good! In case you want to watch after you read it.

2

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago

Didn’t know there was a tv series from the book, what platform is it on? Maybe I’ll check it out after I finish the book if I like the book.

2

u/fire_foot 1d ago

I think it is on Netflix!

2

u/SeaworthinessTrick15 1d ago

I love Blair Braverman!! I also really liked Small Game, her new-ish novel!

3

u/goldentomato32 1d ago

Rain sucks! I hope your fluffy white snow returns soon for more ski adventures! Libby returned my book before I was finished and now I am going to have to actually purchase the silly novel.

3

u/30000LBS_Of_Bananas 1d ago

What book was it?

2

u/nthai 1d ago

I hate those too-cold-to-enjoy-outside-but-not-cold-enough-to-snow temperatures.

6

u/stevelivingroom 1d ago

Pulled my calf a month ago, have missed two races and still can’t run yet. I miss running. 🏃

4

u/bestmaokaina 1d ago

Confession: Im a sucker for SOAR goddies. That stuff is just so peak. Also, the shorter my shorts are the faster i go???

4

u/pettypoppy 1d ago

Yes, it's science*.

  • May not be scientifically proven

2

u/CF_FI_Fly 1d ago

Yes, the same applies to brightness/neon colors. The brighter and shorter the shorts, the faster you run.

3

u/Putrid-Watch8183 1d ago

Complaint: I‘ve lost some fitness due to a calf injury followed by a virus that have limited my ability to run.

Uncomplaint: I’m back running! Trying to be a little cautious and am only targeting 30 miles this week. Starting my half training plan in a couple weeks. Things will get serious soon!

Confessions: I ate a lot of sugar cookies this week and bought a pair of EVO SL.

3

u/chugtron 1d ago

Uncomplaint: Christmas is over! On to my time off in peace through Friday!

Uncomplaint: don’t have to work this week, hell yeah

Complaint: of course the weather is being weird this week

Complaint B: I need to schedule getting my wisdom teeth out ugh. I hate being put under so much.

Confession: I shouldn’t be relieved that the holidays are over, but I really am. I’ve had all of it that I can handle. Now it’s just niece/nephew birthdays and I’m home free for a while.

3

u/BoldCityJag 1d ago

After a PB in my 10k time, running my first half marathon my Vo2 max went from 49 to 48 and then a few workouts later after my first speed workout it jumped up to 50. wtf 😂😂😂

2

u/nthai 1d ago

Complaint: I hate it when I make a track in a route planner but when I'm actually running it, there's no path there and then I need to backtrack and try to find an alternate route.

2

u/CF_FI_Fly 1d ago

Complaints - I am still salty about my anemia and how it's held me back in my last 5k and half.

Uncomplaints - I ran 7 miles yesterday with 3 of them at goal HM pace and felt really good. My treadmill speed work is starting to improve too. (The anemia might be getting better but it's not 100%.)

Confessions - Desserts are my weakness and I ate too much of them yesterday and Xmas eve.

Complaint: I have been dealing with calf cramps for the past month. Started in my right calf. Got it rehabbed through rest, compression, rolling and stretching. Did 2 long runs (a week apart and less than I had been doing) and Saturday. Boom. Major cramp in my left calf. I have no idea what is going on. Talked to the dr and they said not to run. I upped my fluid intake after the first one and I’m a South Florida runner. So the super hot runs are behind me. Shoes are not that old. I’ve actually decreased my MPW before the first cramp. I’m open to any and all suggestions.

2

u/Duncemonkie 1d ago

Electrolytes and strength training? And a running oriented physical therapist if you can swing it.

2

u/clipse270 1d ago

Recently started running further. Was running around 2 miles 2-3 week. Now run 5k 3-4 week and my quads can’t handle it. Been running over a year consistently. I always stretch pre run. Can’t figure it out. By legs have been like jello lately

2

u/something_lite43 1d ago

Complaint: Since it's been rather cold weather I haven't been able to do a lot of outside running 🤷🏾‍♂️

Uncomplaint: I've been deloading, and refocusing on losing weight. Ive lost 10lbs in the last 4-5 weeks. Super stoked about that! Hopefully this equates to faster run times.

Uncompliant. I've logged in over 1440 km's this yr!

Confessions: Hoping to start 2025 like I ended 2024... by beating my brother's 5k finishing race times. 😅

He's had this "friendly" competition with me since the summer, which honestly I didn't know until he told me. Well, I started taking the races more seriously and hadn't let up yet. By my count I'm up 6 could be 7 races now.

2

u/old_namewasnt_best 1d ago

By my count I'm up 6 could be 7 races now.

Heck, it's your bother, I think you might as well round up to 10! ;)

1

u/Adventurous_Jicama_9 1d ago

Complaint: I did a 4 mile run today. It felt good, better than usual. About an hour after I finished I started feeling really unwell and I am still unwell. I am supposed to be training for a marathon and I am hacked off about this. Also I am supposed to go to scout camp in a little over a week and if I'm still sick there won't be enough adults for our troop to go.

1

u/GoLionsJD107 1d ago

My ankle is almost fixed! Just need doc clearance to get going again

1

u/OreosAreGross 1d ago

Confession: been lazy the past 2 months. Gotta get back at it starting TODAY. Slowly but surely.

Uncomplaint: was christmas-gifted electronic hand warmers to slide into my gloves! Yay! Came home from a run this time last year and couldn't get in the house 🙃 even gloves didn't help my hands stay warm enough to turn the key in the knob. Zero grip. Yikes.

Complaint: Did I say I've been lazy and taken the last 2 months off already?

1

u/kyngnothing 11h ago

Complaint I bought a "used" Nathan hydration pack at REI, and a new bladder is as much as I paid for the whole thing! It doesn't look like the bladder was ever used, just no hose.

Since I didn't want to start a whole new thread, any cheap hoses that are compatible with a Nathan bladder? Or should I just buy one of the cheap Amazon bladders that come with a hose?

1

u/Chikeerafish 1d ago

Confession: I haven't run in a month 😭

Uncomplaint: It's because I was on a very long and lovely vacation.

Uncomplaint: I'm enjoying being a Christmas slug

Confession: I've maybe been avoiding running due to snow and cold.

Complaint: I'm probably gonna end up on the dreadmill when I do go back. But I just gotta go move and it'll get easier.

Complaint: I have this nagging, shooting pain in my outer left knee that flares up any time i go more than 5k, and I don’t know what to do about rehabbing it.

I ran the Philly Marathon about a month ago, up until then I’ve never had any issues in my knees. Around mile 15 the knee pain first started, and then came on real strong through the last 11 miles, and unfortunately I missed my goal. I took 2 weeks off, and then ran for the first time, feeling great, but around the 3rd mile the pain came back really heavy. I took another two weeks off, and ran again this morning - same issue. Shooting pain around mile 3.

Looked into it, and I’m not sure if it’s an LCL issue, or just ITBS. Going to try to get to a PT, but (confession) I haven’t done nearly enough strength training this past cycle.
