Available for Adoption Please help me find Squeak a loving home after his bonded brother was killed :( El Paso, TX
Hello. I've had a hard few days. I take care of a cat colony and there were two bonded, friendly, healthy cats. I was unable to bring them inside as I live in an apartment complex, but I shelter them and feed them every single day. There's usually 10 or 12 cats I care for every day. I rehome the kittens and they are scheduled to be TNR'd in January.
Unfortunately, someone killed my sweet boy-one of the two bonded cats. He was only 8 months old. I assume they were annoyed that his happy, bubbly self wanted to be loved by everyone and they no longer wanted him around. (I wish this complex had cameras..i would be having my John Wick moment). He suffered and died on my doorstep because he knew if I found him, I would help him. I was too late. His brother, who I call Squeak from his super high pitched meow, is absolutely devastated. I've been watching him mourn his brother. I will not throw him into a shelter to never be adopted and never get attention since he is a full sized cat and needs all the love he can get right now.
Squeak is NOT fixed. It is $400 to get a personal cat fixed here (for some reason) and I am 35 weeks pregnant. that's why I contacted a TNR service to fix all of my strays. It's a long shot, and a lot of people don't want an unfixed male cat, but I figured I would try. He deserves a family who loves him. He's such a loving sweet boy with a big purr and a big heart. I would love to keep him if I had the room. If you know anyone that can give squeak a good life and can afford to fix him, love him and give him all the hugs and belly rubs (which he loves) in the world please let me know! Since he is a colony cat, it would be fantastic if he could go to a home with other cats! He’s just too friendly to stay outside…
I’ve posted this on El Paso adoption Facebook groups, just covering my bases

I'd have to go to therapy if I ever saw something that cruel and callous. I'm so sorry. I have no words.

When you said killed I assumed you meant put down at a shelter. I hope terrible things for the person who hurt him. Evil.
Thank you for helping OP. I’m so sorry for you and Squeak.

Goddamn I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: I hate people!! I just don’t understand how people can be so fucking cruel to such sweet animals. RIP sweet boy, and thank you OP for trying to rescue Squeak!!

How about raising funds to get him fixed first? Maybe that would help him find a home. I would participate
8
u/emmybabycat 7d ago
I would feel kind of bad because it’s so insanely expensive in this city. Back home in central TX it costs about $90 to get a male cat fixed. 😐

Are you sure there’s no low cost clinics? Can you get in touch with a rescue? I’m in Houston and some rescues will offer vouchers for neutering and spaying. That’s how I got one of my ferals spayed for free
7
u/emmybabycat 6d ago
I called and asked for prices everywhere and I mean genuinely everywhere. I may just..start begging and explain the situation and see if that brings it down? I understand the shelters here costing as much as the regular vets because there are thousands of cats at each shelter and they need to keep it running, but holy crap
4
u/Ashamed_Cricket_3429 APPROVED FOR DONATION REQUESTS 6d ago
That’s crazy! Houston is really overcrowded too and it was hard to find help. Why don’t you try to reach out to the rescue I used? Maybe you can apply for a voucher and use at a vet up there. I can’t guarantee it though. It’s called HOPE and they respond well to Facebook messages. Tell them you’re in an emergency situation

That is so sad to read - the murder of his brother just breaks my heart 💔😔

The person who killed him should know what it’s like to have the same thing done to them. Fu** that person

I was hysterical knocking on my neighbors doors trying to figure out who did that to him. They did not enjoy a crying heavily pregnant lady 😬

This sickens me. I would say humans are a fuckin disease ,but you give me some faith. It's not much to leave these poor babies alone but people have to go out their way to be heartless assholes. I'm so sorry and I'm glad they got some type of love shown to them. Idek what to say I couldn't imagine what I would do in your position. Wishing the worse for those assholes.

People who do that to a cat should be slowly tortured to death, preferably in public and on television for everyone to see. I hope the cat will find a good home

No pressure but maybe you could see if mods would let you crowdfund for pledges who could pay for out of state transport/donate to a rescue that agrees to take him?

Not many people are in the market for an intact tomcat. You might have luck finding him a home as a barn cat.
9
u/emmybabycat 7d ago
A barn in the desert 😂 I know you were trying to be helpful but that’s not going to work haha. Squeak is full of personality and should get to live inside, I’d hate for that to go to waste because I cant spare the money to fix him
1
u/OverResponse291 6d ago
Some places like warehouses might be willing to take a “working cat” as a mouser. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than the alternative. Plus, the employees often love their new coworker! Gotta think outside the box sometimes! 😉
5
u/emmybabycat 6d ago
If he were utterly unadoptable and didn’t like people, I’d agree. Squeak was born to be a house cat though
2
u/OverResponse291 6d ago
I got downvoted for that? I actually worked in a place where they had mousers, our local CO OP had them in the feed and grain storage areas to keep the rodent population down. They were all outdoor cats, but they were all well cared for and the employees liked them. They had 24 hour access to a nice shelter, too.
If you can’t find him a traditional home, this could be a valid option. It certainly beats going to a shelter.

I’m on the fence about a lot of things. I could make an appointment after the holidays to get him fixed and ask for donation help, but that’s risky because any of the days in January I could give birth and I want to be able to watch him recover.
6
u/Ashamed_Cricket_3429 APPROVED FOR DONATION REQUESTS 6d ago
If it makes you feel better neuter recovery is much simpler than spay! With my feral they told me to keep him confined for 24-28 hours and let him Back out. I hope he finds a home 🙏🏻
2
u/ForsakenCommunity863 4d ago
Can confirm have kept nurtured boys on my porch in a very very large dog cage for tnr since I have my own “illegal”(not on my lease) in side the apartment for only a day or two at most.
5
u/Ok-Detective-8526 6d ago
Ohh dear OP I understand your struggle. But the good thing he is a male and might need not a lot of help. Males usually recover in a day or two.
Is there a family or friend that could take over in case you give birth? Because even if you don’t fix him you will still give birth and need your space and time.
Whatever works for you of course! Please let us know if you need donations ❤️

I took my new rescue cat into get fixed at his vet and I balked at the $400+ amount. I hadn’t shopped around before then so I had to TRY. Other vets were similar, if slightly lower.
I asked the rescue that uses petsmart to have cat adoption days, and they referred me to a nearby feed store (Called “Feed Barn” in CA). That led me to a nearby org that sets people up with low-cost fixing and shots and stuff through the county… I ended up paying like $75 for his neutering and microchipping. (My vet wanted to charge $95 for the microchip alone.) The store also sold vaccinations for like $5. Maybe you have a similar store or orgs near you?
Also makes bounce back really quickly. I kept an eye on my guy, but he ripped his cone off asap, and I didn’t try to put it back. He was a little derpy from meds the first day but that was it.

Neuter recovery time is pretty quick. In a pinch, you could ask if the vet could board him for just a few days.
Thank you for helping this little guy and congratulations on your little bundle. Best wishes for a smooth welcome and recovery.🌻

$400 is absolute insanity. Im so worried about my 16-year-old dog getting old-age ill and not being able to help him through it. Regular people cannot afford pets anymore.
I hope this kid gets lucky and finds a perma-home. ♥️

Some pet insurances will cover older pets!

u/TheRealSugarbat 4d ago
So far no luck. I’ve tried to get quotes from 3-4 companies and so far they’ve disqualified us. It’s extremely frustrating.

u/hellomichelle87 7d ago
I know it’s hard in your case, but I really really really wish people wouldn’t give away unfixed cats.😭
27
u/emmybabycat 7d ago
I would never give away an unfixed cat if I wasn’t scared for his well being. I have been so immersed in helping this colony with their needs that I don’t even have a bed purchased for my nearly full term baby. Up until now I was using all of my savings to get them ready for adoption but I ran out of time and money. Maybe my priorities aren’t straight and I should definitely get my shit together, but I really care about these guys. Especially Squeak.
10
u/hellomichelle87 7d ago
Trust me, I understand. I’m hoping that since you posted locally to you, someone will be able To get him! Did you post on Facebook? Would you like me to post on Facebook for you?
13
u/emmybabycat 7d ago
I posted him on a couple of El Paso cat adoption pages that I frequently use for kittens and it’s getting some traction, definitely not as much as the younger kittens I’ve rehomed but he’s also not fixed so I fully expect people to be put off by that. I’m sure someone will want him! He’s such a great cat
7
u/hellomichelle87 7d ago
Sometimes, if you make a donation to the rescue, it helps him get into their programs. The It’s just an idea. I know you said you don’t have much money though I’m sure everybody on here is just going nuts because we love cats so much and it’s so emotional.

Is anybody coming to Houston from El Paso That could bring me this squeak baby? I will take him! just try looking for transportation now. Also try on the road again volunteer who transport animals but I’ve never used it only heard about it. A lot of people are coming this way try and see if we can schedule something soon♥️♥️♥️

I’m in Houston and just yesterday there were two different posts on Nextdoor saying neighbors witness two different people running over a dog and one running over a cat yesterday! I just don’t understand 💔

u/hellomichelle87 7d ago
What TNR service did you contact? I’m just curious how it is in El Paso.

u/emmybabycat 7d ago
Sun city cats. They’re super great! Due to the holidays and whatnot they have my case scheduled for January—which isn’t very far away but that’s also when I’m due and I want to be able to help.
10
u/hellomichelle87 7d ago
Yeah, we couldn’t trap tonight because the vets we use are gonna be closed for holidays
It seems like you’re doing a pretty good job trying to help the cats and you know the importance of getting them fixed. I wish Him Good luck in finding a home !

Lol I have a soft spot for tabby’s and I have struggled dealing with friendly strays that couldn’t find a home ! but the more I reached in Houston the more resources I found to help cats to help the ones close to Me! I’m planning to TnR my apartments complex I have 3 other people With me who only wanted to help because I’m genuine about it and passionate too . trappers I know don’t want to help those who aren’t trying to help themselves. I’m sure that I can get rescue backing to get him fixed and vaccines too so I’ll be able to foster him and try to find him a home💙or he will stay here. And my husband loves cats too. When you love something you try to find a way
5
u/truly_beyond_belief 7d ago
I love tabbies, too! (Mine is sleeping on my foot right now.) I'm glad that your husband is supportive. That will make it so much easier! You're doing a good thing!

Same here but I am Planning on moving in the next few months funny I even told my husband we might have to adopt another cat before we go because they is just too many here if it’s not squeak it will be another.
It a long way from El Paso to Houston what like 9 hours??? Ugh I really pray this kitty finds a loving home close by OP but we all will see what happens I’m here if he needs

u/TOXICHUNT 6d ago
Exact reason why cats don't belong outside. I realize they're strays you're feeding, but i hope YOU realize the same thing is gonna happen to the brother cat. If that sadistic Psycho would kill a poor Defenseless cat like that, then the piece of low life scum will do it again... we live in an apartment & have rescued tons of cats & kittens in distress needing a home. We do what we have to... Very long story with us.... But please don't allow that to happen to him. Things like this is honestly why I hate anyone who doesn't like cats!!! The culprit should be tortured slowly...
9
u/emmybabycat 6d ago
Respectfully, I wouldn’t have cared or made this post if I didn’t know all of that. I’m trying. I give birth in the next couple of weeks and I have a one bedroom apartment. I’ve rehomed many, many cats. I also have 2 rescued cats of my own that my apartment has no idea about because I needed to help them. I know you’re not trying to come across as rude or anything but my situation is different
