Speculation Would Norman Reedus be a good John Marston?
25
Jul 24 '23
The best actors for an RDR2 film or TV adaptation are probably complete nobodies right now.

no because he's white, not red

u/BurtMaclin23 Jul 24 '23
My favorite part was when he said it's Redemption time.

Then some one walked by saying wow was this one of those red dead redemptions

u/MrChilliBean Jul 25 '23
I liked the part at the end of the DLC when he woke up and said, "Wow, that sure was an Undead Nightmare".

No, he looks nothing like Marston and he’s pushing 60 years old. Reedus would however make a perfect Colm O’Driscoll. I’m worried about y’all that say he would play a good Marston.

No, he's a solid actor but no one else except Rob Wiethoff could play John. He IS John, and while Norman resembles him (Albeit vaguely), looks aren't everything in a character.

u/Fickle_Thought_8857 Jul 24 '23
You're last sentence is correct. Just because they look the same doesn't mean they'll fit the part. Ever single fan casting for rdr2 only casts people that look similar to the character
3
u/ThatBeardedHistorian Jul 24 '23
Except that Norman is a good enough actor to pull the role of John Marston off. I mean, think about it. Daryl Dixon and John Marston have quite a few similarities as characters. Normally, I don't go for or agree with Fan castings, but I do think that Norman as John would work out really well.

u/Fickle_Thought_8857 Jul 24 '23
I'm not against it. He was one of my favorites in twd
I'm mostly just going off on lazy fan casting that people do for clicks

Looks are a large part tho. Rob looks nothing like John. Just because he's the voice actor didn't mean he's suitable for a live action role
22
u/suika_suika Jul 24 '23
He's not just a voice actor, nearly all of the work they do is performance capture. Which is physically acting in a volume, much like movies, shows, and theatre. On top of that, with a good wig and makeup Rob could absolutely favor John. No one else but the cast who played these characters should take the roles IMO.

Jul 24 '23 edited Jul 24 '23
You're acting like nobody else could do what they did lol. Rob' voice is iconic. He's not built like John and, he's too old for the part. Rob is 46. John in rd2 is supposed to be mid 20s.
Let's say they actually made a movie/ show for rd2. Well we're in a writers strike. So it's not even starting anytime soon. By the time they actually start filming, rob could easily be in his mid/ late 50s. That's more than a 30 year gap

u/suika_suika Jul 24 '23 edited Jul 24 '23
Because I don't think anyone could. So much of who those characters are is tied to the actors they chose. Especially John, Dutch, and Arthur. It would be incredibly backwards to replace them over something as small as their looks. The performance is more important than that.
However these discussions are kind of meaningless anyway, because it's extremely unlikely R* would ever allow someone else to have control over their storytelling choices.

If the actors are well beyond the intended age of the characters, it just won't work.
2
u/plinnskol Jul 24 '23
I’m with you. It’s a completely unrealistic ask for voice actors to perform in live action, and idc if they did motion capture. If anyone really wants a movie from the series (not me), they’ll have to understand casting is going to be so divisive among fans. Look at other video game adaptions excluding The Last of Us, and that happens every time.
1
u/suika_suika Jul 24 '23
You're just being intentionally ignorant if you think performance capture is not comparable to live action acting, it's pretty much the exact same workflow.

u/GameDestiny2 Jul 24 '23
I dunno, I’ve seen plenty of 30 year olds claiming to be high schoolers.

u/TonyTwoDat Jul 24 '23
Or let Norman play the part and Rob dub his voice lines problem solver everyone happy???
2
u/Nearby_Lobster_ Jul 24 '23
While I agree, voice acting and acting in front of a camera are two very different things
6
u/suika_suika Jul 24 '23
Sorry, but you're mistaken. The actors in RDR2 are not voice actors, at least, that was not their job in RDR2 (Though they did do VO). They did performance capture, which is very akin to working on stage in theatre, television, and movie productions.

Let’s be realistic here, if a big studio were to make an adaptation of RDR, they’re not gonna bring back the relatively obscure character actors from the original game, they’re gonna need big names that get butts in seats.
Besides, why would you even want an adaptation will all the same actors? the experience would just be more or less identical but without the gameplay. I’d rather see another actor bring a new interpretation of the character.
8
u/DylanFTW Jul 24 '23
No lol.
John's voice is too iconic. Norman Reedus just needs to stick to playing himself like he always does.

As John in a Red Dead 1 adaptation? He’s perfect, just too old to play the John of RDR2
5
u/sledgehammer_77 Jul 24 '23
Looks more of a Mikah to me
3
u/Zilla96 Dutch van der Linde Jul 24 '23
Just think that, I think he could pull off the coldness and creepiness of being "friendly" in the Micah way

What is everyone's goddamn obsession with casting a RDR movie or tv show? You spend so much time with these characters, and so many of them have such amazing voice actors with very distinct voices. You would absolutely hate seeing anyone play John, Dutch, or Arthur. The second you heard them speak, you would shut that shit off and run to the internet to bitch about how Hollywood ruined another game franchise. Just leave it alone people! We already have an incredible story, we don't need a shit movie or tv show.
2
u/Steoorer Jack Marston Jul 24 '23
If they make red dead redemption in live action I don’t think they should recast any of the game actors
3
u/Chimpbot Jul 24 '23
Most of the cast wouldn't fit the ages of the characters, at this point. Rob Wiethoff, for example, is almost 50 while John Marston is in his 20s and 30s between the two games.

u/Legoman_1523 Jul 07 '24
The guy who plays William Turner in pirates of the Caribbean would be good as a young John from rdr2 and Norman would be good as an older John from rdr1

absolutely I can’t think of any other actor that could nail the personality and demeanor. But unfortunately he’s too old
-1
u/mymumsaysno Jul 24 '23
No. He's not a good actor. I also don't really think he has the look or the bearing.
1
u/CanibalVegetarian Jul 24 '23
I think he’s past playing younger character personally, but mid season 5-6 Norman I think would’ve been prime for a John. I don’t think they should make a movie or show though

u/Cute_Kitchen8529 Jul 24 '23
I posted my concept art on this yesterday but it was deleted by mods. Its very unfair and doesn’t know what to do.

I agree with the comment about him playing colm O'driscoll. Could be an interesting offshoot.

Hey, your Arthur and my Arthur are probably not the same.
Which is why I don’t ever want a RDR movie. Media doesn’t have to change mediums. The games are there and amazing; why do they need to be made into movies too?

People say Rob looks nothing like John and I frankly have no idea what they’re talking about. Put a hat, some scratchy face hair, and a signature scar on our boy; he’d look just like RDR1 John.
And for the people who say he’s built nothing like John, you’ve heard of gyms right? Muscles don’t just appear on their own, Rob would be far from the first to get into shape or out of shape for a role.
1
u/vine_behs Jul 24 '23
It’s just because of the hair. After that, i don’t see why.
Christian Bale for me

This comes up every so often, and Norman wouldn't match any charisma with John. He can play a rough cowboy just fine but John is more complex than any characters I've seen from Reedus.
He's good at his niche, looks aren't everything. The same discussion is held around who could play Kratos- sure some look like him and are massive already, but they don't have the range.

I don’t see John as a pouty faced twitcher. Don’t get me wrong I love Norman Reedus but if he isn’t playing “Daryl” then he isn’t acting. He acts the same in everything. Again that’s fine cause I like him. I just don’t see him as John.

Just because someone looks like a character doesn't mean they might be good for the role.

He could pull it off if he wanted to. He's a great actor.

Jul 24 '23
Just get the voice actors to do it. After all they used motion capture and their likeness to make the games
1
u/God_of_Mischief85 Jul 24 '23
You know who I think would portray John Marsten perfectly?
Rob Wiethoff. He’s already done it, twice over, why not go for a third in live action?

He's got the look but could he do the voice? Feel like it would just sound like wild west Daryl

u/Necessary-Yogurt2611 Jul 24 '23
No. I love Norman. But he’s too fuckin old. Johns jn his mid to late 20’s in rdr2

I’m actually getting strong Micah vibes from this pic.
I’d cast Josh Brolin for Arthur Morgan for sure.
As for John Marston…maybe Christian Bale or Keanu Reeves.

u/Slugghy Jul 25 '23
Way too old. I think in RDR1, John was 38 or something. Norman is 54!
This is like when people in their 20s used to play teenagers in the 2000s.

u/OutsiderHALL John Marston Jul 24 '23
He definitely looks the part, but I think he's too old.
