It depends, what do you need protection from?

Use a VPN.

Social networking trackers don’t usually tie behavior to IP. Where a VPN would come in handy is if it had DNS blocking and blocked trackers, like many VPNs have. Using a private browser like Firefox or DDG would benefit privacy wise over a VPN however

I use Firefox with a VPN often.

Yeah, that’s a good setup to block social networking trackers

Safer than? If you're talking about stuff like the apps or Google Chrome's browser, then yes. Pretty much anything

  • capable of blocking trackers and ads
  • doesn't add their own, and
  • is open-source (so we know they're telling the truth)

is better than those two things.

My method, is using Firefox for meta based social media and that alone. I do not install the apps as they are essentially spyware. I use different browsers for different things. It's more work for you, but ultimately safer.

Safer would be, if you using social media in a private / incognito browser window instead of a reagular browser window. Once you closing the browser all social media cash will be deleted, which makes it more safe.

Duckduckgo browser is safer then chrome as in it blocks certain trackers on each website, but if you are using a particular social media website, DuckDuckGo would not be able to block tracking without breaking the website, so it definitely allows some ads and tracking but better than chrome without any kind of blocking. The best thing would be to not use social media if that is an option.
