question Quantum-Resistant Help, Small Business

I have been working on simple solutions integrating quantum-resistant encryption and want to help anybody and everybody secure their data against all kinds of threats, no matter their technical savvy.

Was looking for feedback in this process and attempting to determine if a service/product would be preferred. If you're experienced in this field or interested in upgrading your file security, I would appreciate your time.

Thanks!

We don't know what the quantum threat to encryption will look like or even if such a thing is possible. So you have to be very careful in what you are claiming to do for your users. You can easily mislead them in a way that results in less actual security.

Exactly this. I once asked one of the top quantum computing researchers at the University of Maryland about this. Specifically I asked how do we know these algorithms are quantum safe when we don’t even really have any real computers to run the quantum algorithms? He kinda just chuckled and said we really don’t know.

So for now I feel like it is all a big circle jerk.

Also be mindful of some of these allegedly quantum proof encryptions being more susceptible to traditional attacks.

This is totally the case. We DON'T know if these new algs will protect at-rest data from quantum threats, however, I would think that integrating new solutions alongside legacy implementations is better than waiting.

I call that “wasting money, time, and effort on a speculation”.

Sure, why should we trust endless credible sources stating that there is an impending quantum threat anyways?

There likely is a threat. However we do not understand it enough just yet. Doing something just for the sake of acting like you are solving a problem without evidence it is solving your problem is a wasted effort.

I’ve used a lot of different file-sharing and storage platforms over the last two decades (Dropbox, WeTransfer, Box, Mega), but for the best security and privacy, I ended up with TransferChain Drive. Its unique protocol - client-side encryption, end-to-end encryption, data splitting, blockchain authorization etc. - really stands out.

and as u/ArnoCryptoNymous mentioned AES-256 stands strong, but obviously just the 'encryption' won't cut it in today's ecosystem.

Well as fare as I know Apple is using this for all connections into the cloud and in the cloud. And I am not quite sure, but I can imagine Apple uses the same encryption for their iDevices and Macs.

I am not an expert in quantum safe encryption, but I am interested in this topic. As fare as I know, there are barely some encryption protocols and stuff who are really quantum safe. But it is also said, that AES 256 encryption is at least for now and the following 5-10 years quantum safe.

So communication encryption is already possible (iMessage, Signal, Threema, FaceTime). Quantum safe encryption in connection also. Like iCloud Drive, all the other Cloud services, if they using the right encryption. (Alternatively VPN) Datas and files of users and companies … depending.
