question What do I do about this?

I jokingly signed up for a weird but legit website and after 10 minutes when I tried deleting my account, I couldn't and customer support hasn't responded in 3 days. Since then I've gone into a deep dive on privacy and data leaks and data brokers for using my real name and birthday when signing up. So how do I move forward? Do I just accept the fact that my name and birthday are in their possession forever and my account will always exist? Or do I keep trying to pester them or find a workaround?

Do you live somewhere were you have a legal right to have the data be deleted? If not it's there's and the most you can do is ask

In the future maybe don't use real information.

That's the plan. To not use real information. I feel like I'm already screwed though.

The place I live is going to enact a law that allows me to request data removal. But it's only going to be added in 2025. And the website was created in California. I know CA has its own laws but I don't know if that means anything.

This wasn't the first and likely won't be the last service to get there hands on that information. One mistake does not mean you are screwed, privacy isn't all or nothing it's a spectrum.

It's worth a shot.

Only if the entity who's data it is is also from California, but it could be worth a try.

Can my state enforce anything outside of state lines?

You gave a weird site your birthday and your name... Why?

Check your countries legal rights regarding data deletion. EU has GDPR so you can use that in your email, however, that's just an EU law and not non-EU.

Because I'm an idiot who only has an epiphany after a mistake (I have chronic brain farts).

sorry I should've clarified that.

Also, not weird in the scam way. Weird in the I judge people who unironically use this type of way.

If the service exists outside the US/EU/Canada/AUS/NZ, forget it. Your data is gone.

next time, be a little more careful about it.

It's located in CA and primarily operates within the US.

Then just send them a data deletion request.

They have to legally comply with it.
