THIS was the Christmas movie they chose tonight...

Spent the evening with some very sweet older women. The 98 year old wanted to watch Babes in Toyland. I was NOT prepared. Her singing along like that lady at the end of the Metallica song just added to the ambiance. She was half a bottle of hard cider in by then. Goals.

That is a scene from the Laurel and Hardy movie 'March of the Wooden Soldiers'. It is a classic we would watch every Thanksgiving when I was a kid. The whole movie has disturbing elements like the boogeymen and the wooden soldiers. The early years of Hollywood were not steeped in CGI elegance.

I was absolutely floored with the amount of work it took. This was in the 1930s. They build an entire town of whimsy, sculpt and cast dozens of costumes. It's archaic now, but this must have been a HUGE production.

You're right, the entire movie had me gripped like passing a car accident.

Also I completely agree, there were some terrifying things in this movie. Very uncanny valley for a few of the characters lol

The scene where Laurel's character figures out the wooden soldiers' purpose and the theme song for them when they start marching got me all choked up and air fist pumping every time when I was 8 years old.

Every year after the thanksgiving parade they would play this on what was channel 11 for me which later became the wb and no idea what it is now. Memories

Was that the NYC metropolitan area? I grew up in NJ and seems like back in the days of 3 networks and PBS, the local stations would decide what to air, like the 4:30 movie or Chiller Theater, etc.

Yes this was Long Island. When I was a kid the channel was called wpix then became the wb and I think it’s the cw now? I haven’t had used regular tv for about 18 years haha. It used to air directly after the parade and then when the film ended they always showed a short from laurel and hardy that took place on a boat that involved eggs but I can’t remember.

Used to watch this during the holidays ever single year back in the days before cable TV existed. Absolutely loved Laurel and Hardy. I tried so hard to do that stick whack thing Laurel did in the movie.

Terrifying Human like Cat playing a violen and a Mickey Mouse thatl looks like it is done with everything. Why is that in the 30s and even the 20s as well as th era of silent films make things more terrifying like the one with the Human like Pig.

I'm pretty sure the mouse was a monkey IN a mouse suit. He lemur-Leeaaped through a few scenes.

They also had humanoid pigs! 3 little pigs in some kind of rubber suits. Guessing they were child labor, probably called in sick from crawling through chimneys that day...

The entire movie was an acid trip.

This VHS lived at my grandma’s house and they loved putting it on. I had to finally man up and watch it as an adult to get over the fear of the creepiness. The boogeyman is too much.

Does anyone have the link to the edit of this scene where there's this violin song played over the video? I can't remember the name of the song and can't find the video.

Such a fun movie. It comes in a colorized version too! This movie got me into Laurel and Hardy's other works. Such a hilarious duo!
