Arachnids following behind one of these guys is not a smart idea
229
u/georgelamarmateo Jul 25 '23
But what exactly did he want? Was he just trying to scare you? Was he seriously trying to attack you? Does anyone know why these tarantulas do that? I thought they are like not harmful, but this looks harmful

Jul 25 '23
I read somewhere that spiders can see some sort of laser the camera gives off(that humans can’t see obviously). So I assume it’s reacting to that.

u/Corvid1743 Jul 25 '23
This is an Arizona Blonde Tarantula, a harmless spider that will try everything it can before biting you. They don’t chase people, much like many nocturnal animals, when caught in the daylight, they chase the shadows or things that block light, especially when threatened, because they want to get out of there as fast as possible. No spider will intentionally chase you, even the spiders with the meanest demeanors want to do anything they can before wasting their venom. You would be in more danger from a bee sting than this tarantula’s bite.
48
u/NoGrapefruit1269 Jul 26 '23
Did you just leave a comment saying these spiders don’t chase people on a video that literally shows one of those spiders chasing somebody.
27
u/Corvid1743 Jul 26 '23
They chase the shadow, not the person. In this video it makes it look like they are chasing the person, but had there been another, darker cover they would’ve went there instead.
10
u/Silly_Awareness8207 Jul 26 '23
"They case the shadow, not the person" sounds creepy af
5
u/georgelamarmateo Jul 26 '23
I know, right like what were they planning to do to the shadow. If the shadow was a person they were going to eat them.

Let me introduce you to the Brazilian Wandering Spider
19
u/Corvid1743 Jul 25 '23
They are still far from aggressive, they are also a lot less defensive than made out to be. Even with their highly toxic venom, they only cause severe envenomations 2% of the time, and there’s been less than 25 fatalities since anti venom was introduced in the early 1900’s.
5
u/TheCeruleanFire Jul 26 '23
This person is really a spider
4
u/Corvid1743 Jul 26 '23
Shh dude, don’t blow my cover!
2
u/_Ruij_ Jul 26 '23
Apparently those bird hunting spiders aren't large enough and now the even bigger ones poses as humans!!! nope.
7
u/Nomad_Nash Jul 25 '23
Those spiders just have the unfortunate habit of dwelling too close to humans. They're very misunderstood and not as agressive as most think. What the other poster said above holds true for them as well.
3
u/bedrockbloom Jul 26 '23
So then wtf is this little guy doing because it sure looks like chasing.
1
u/Corvid1743 Jul 26 '23
Chasing the shadow, not the person. Given the chance to find better cover it’ll take it immediately
1
1
u/georgelamarmateo Jul 26 '23
How do you know they weren’t planning to bite the shadow thinking it was a person
1
u/Corvid1743 Jul 26 '23
No spider ever wants to bite unless it’s something it can eat, it’s a waste of their venom. When they chase shadows it’s so they can hide in the dark.

u/conqaesador Jul 25 '23
Not too much going on inside that thing since it doesn't even have a brain. Propably sensed the ground shaking so better not to move for a moment, so a potential predator won't see you as easily. Then flight impulse kicked in and best course of action is usually to leave the plain ground and go up the closest tree. Well with bad eyesight your legs look tree like enough so she'll make a run for it. No tactics, no recognizing you as a living being, just input triggered reaction with no thought or intention behind it
42
u/anitacoknow Jul 25 '23
👁️👄👁️ no...no brain??? Sprints to Google
Edit: you're fucking right omfg, their central nervous system is made of up hair like nerves 🤮
17
u/International_Cry186 Jul 25 '23
Oh god why does that make it even worse?
11
u/anitacoknow Jul 25 '23
I KNOW, I SAT SOBBING IN BED THINKING ABOUT HOW I'M AFRAID OF SMALL THINGS WITH NO BRAINS
9
u/NoGrapefruit1269 Jul 26 '23
Only vertebrates have what we would call a brain but invertebrates have something else that serves the same purpose. Octopus don’t have the same type of brain as invertebrates but they are still among the most intelligent creatures on the planet

The truth that animals aren’t no where the same like humans when it comes to thoughts, emotions, and senses hurts Redditors a lot.
1
u/420goattaog Dec 12 '23
We quite literally are animals lmao. Also other animals do compare to humans in many ways with their emotions. Many animals senses are actually way better than ours.
Where we have certain things that make us on top, other animals can definitely destroy us in some places.
We could never beat certain primates at short term memory. No human can come anywhere close to what other primates can.
Animal behavior is not straight down to humans being the smartest. We are animals, and every animal has evolved to be more adept in certain areas.
1
u/Nehemiah92 Dec 12 '23
whyd u respond after four months just to send in such a smart aleck comment, you know what I meant when I separated humans from the other animals dawg 😭 it’s the same way when Redditors feel obligated to correct people with birds being dinosaurs or thumbs not being fingers, like, we know….
And obviously primates are close to humans in this regard, but in this context, it’s a BUG. I MEAN ARACHNID SORRY !! Redditors are obsessed with personifying literally any animal that should not be personified

It seems that lots of people think, that tarantulas cannot move fast, as they are big and chonky. Well, as this video shows, they are up to a big surprise. My spidey did something similar, when I was cleaning his enclosure - but he ran up on my hand instead.
44
u/Rubber_Rose_Ranch Jul 25 '23
I've raised P.Metallicas (Gooty Sapphire) and let me tell you. They will be out of their enclosure and fangs deep in you before you can blink.

I wouldn’t say attack, I’d argue that he was trying defend himself. Dude was doodlelooting down the sidewalk when a creep started to video him and he felt uncomfortable. Definitely innocent to me

u/blood_fist3600 Jul 25 '23
That may be a camel spider. These spiders are known to chase people. They chase you because they awlays b-line for shade. If it sees your shadow, it might dash for it but. It isnt attacking.

u/MsDonnaE Jul 25 '23
I was busy doing things while watching. When it stopped walking so did I. Really awkward to realize I said “ooh shit” out loud while backing up to, NOT in fact a real spider in front of me, but in a video I could have skipped or turned off.
I’m still cackling like crazy…. I’m glad I wasn’t half asleep and watching while falling asleep. Would have thrown my phone so hard it could never be fixed.
Flamethrowers just sayin’. It’s the only way to be sure.

Yeah it does a sharp quick U-Turn coming at ya sucker! ... LOL it even frightened me their for a sec ...? I remember my Grand Uncle Milton kept one as a pet, same color. My Aunt Ruth is arachnophobic, and she yelled at him shouting: "Get That Thing Out Of Here! ..."

There's so many people recording Insects and getting attacked by them. Most insects can see the infrared from your phone camera and react to it. It's why they react to your recordings or pics.

I’m so glad I saw this coming. I picked up a cup next to me to take a sip while scrolling. Before even taking a sip I slowly lowered it back to my nightstand knowing a jump scare was coming. I’m already dressed for work and scrolling since I have a little downtime so I made the right call

This is still awful - but a lesser degree of awful.

I used to have a Snapchat memory of a tarantula chasing me, a fully grown man in a combat uniform and kit with a rifle, until I succumbed and climbed on top of a vehicle. It was in some mountain range in southern California called case springs. The drive up there, the road was littered with them. I easily saw hundreds of them as we drove up the mountain side and could hear the audible crunch the humvee made when we hit one (rip). It was grotesque and all I could think at the time was, "I have to sleep in a sleeping bag up here". I am terribly afraid of spiders but I learned real quick that if you leave them alone then they'll leave you alone. Unless you're warm, then they'll try to cuddle you while you sleep.
I definitely instigated the one that chased me. I aimed my rifle (full of blanks with a blank firing adapter attached) at it and yelled for him to stop moving and to throw his hands in the air. At the time, a hilarious joke. Then he attacked and I ran and screamed like a little girl.
