Irish governments of the past were so weird about Joyce. It's bizarre that the family's wishes were just dismissed

He was quite strident in his disapproval of the close links between the Irish state and the Church. Didn’t win him many friends during his exile.

But so were others and he was rarely singled out during his lifetime. It's like a handful of Irish politicians took a severe personal dislike of him.

If you lived in Ireland even 40yrs ago, it'd be no mystery at all why the conservatives(and that's all of them back then) of the Church and Government took a dislike to him. His fondness for scat was no secret even back then and that's without taking into account his views on the Church.

Why bother in all seriousness? Tourism? Bit of a joke, the lad is dead and died abroad because he couldn't live in Ireland. It's a tale as old as time for artists who don't sell themselves to corporations.
