Anything by Marcia Bjornerud!
Because she primarily teaches undergraduates, I think she has learned well how to communicate clearly, with interesting examples, with good detail and humor.
Her most recent book, Turning to Stone: Discovering the Subtle Wisdom of Rocks, is a memoir that explains the different parts of her life through the rocks of the area where she lived. It’s a wonderful book.
She also has written Timefulness: How Thinking Like a Geologist Can Help Save the World; Reading The Rocks: The Autobiography of the Earth; and Geopedia: A Brief Compendium of Geologic Curiosities.

Bill Bryson * A Short History of Nearly Everything. Chapters 12 to 15 is a good introduction to Earth Science. The language is plainspoken and a bit of humor if that is your style. If you live in the USA get a copy of the Roadside Geology for your state. The first chapters introduce geology and the you can drive to some features that are in the book.
