I love how shit the sponsors were. “First National City Travelers Checks” must’ve been the 70s version of FTX.

So many shady sponsors over the years! If a company advertises in F1 I suspect they are ethically challenged. Palantir...

u/10b0b I'm in a parasocial relationship with Hannah 🤤🤤 14h ago

Bin Ladens family sponsored Williams at one point.

ABBA also sponsored ATS and Tyrell.

Neither are as dodgy as Rich Energy.

Peak shady sponsor

They didn't even got any money from that ABBA thing

Although there was no cash sponsorship, Borgudd placed the ABBA logo on the car's sidepods, a hopeful move to attract other investors that generated a lot of media interest.

They actually were a bank that then changed name to CitiBank

9

u/thesuperunknown Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki 11h ago

Yep. They were “First National City Bank of New York”, and this was specifically an ad for their travelers checks.

If you’re thinking, hold on, “National City” makes no sense, the stupid name was because they were originally called City Bank of New York and then merged with First National Bank. There are multiple banks that have a dumb name because of a merger, for example Fifth Third Bank.

u/bombcat97 BWOAHHHHHHH 13h ago

It's Citibank.

No ferrari? They put 4 wheels on one rear axel if i recall correctly.

11

u/Humble-Soup5295 BWOAHHHHHHH 14h ago

The March 2-4-0 also had 6 wheels, it looked like the Williams FW08B.

9

u/Silver-Machine-3092 BWOAHHHHHHH 14h ago

I had the Scalextric 6-wheeled March when I was a kid, until it launched from a banked section, hit the wall and snapped at the front right where the contact-head attached.

Don't stop there. Add more wheels!

u/GSwizzy17 Nico Hulkenbark 14h ago

The tyrell wasn’t even that bad either

5

u/Cloudsareinmyhead my driver bAd:snoo_disapproval: 12h ago

Yes but also no. It was fast but the dual steering was unreliable and due to the smaller front tyres wearing out faster than the rears it made it a huge pain in the ass to do pistops. Also Goodyear was only making the 10 inch tyre for them and not seeing any real return on the money they'd invested.

3

u/Chlupac_ I like Norris and i sniff bike seats 13h ago

Other teams were so terrified and unprepared they made FIA ban it so they don't lose ton of money trying to chase Tyrell.

u/truenofan86 Ze Rot Automobili 13h ago

Hell Jackie Stewart said it was a great car.

5

u/Johnny_OSG I love alonslow and I have untreatable levels of stupid 13h ago

I'd love to see a combination of the two. An eight-wheeled F1 car. Imagine the pit-stops

3

u/TheAntiAirGuy BWOAHHHHHHH 14h ago

Just imagine the sponsors on that sleek Mercedes-Benz G4

3

u/krngc3372 BWOAHHHHHHH 13h ago

So how does the pit stop work here? Six wheel gunners?

3

u/JesusIsMyLord666 BWOAHHHHHHH 11h ago

Did they even change the wheels during the race back then? I think they only did refuelling.

Six Wheel cars rule.

1

u/ZoidbergNick BWOAHHHHHHH 11h ago

FW08b is impressive for me. I remember listening/reading that during test they ran the last set of wheels on slicks while the front and middle was on wets. They said the wets cleared the water so good that the rear slicks managed to hold onto the tarmac like crazy.

1

u/alienangel2 In Hannah we trust 🥰 10h ago

So, assuming a mostly flat track, what advantage do more wheels provide a race car? More traction during turns, with fewer/no tyre changes? Does the turning radius change?

1

u/Imagionis BWOAHHHHHHH 8h ago

Afaik they mainly had better aerodynamic peformance
