What artists should have won their seasons....but didn't?

Just joined this group so this has probably been discussed a million times. I have been watching Face Off for years off and on. Usually binge to get thru the cold boring winters in Jersey. I absolutely love the creativity of the show and admire all the artists who can conceptualize and create in 3 days. I couldn't do what they do in 3 years. Anyway, I think Emily, Miranda and Tyler were 3 of the best artists that were on Face Off. The fact that Emily was only 18 blows my mind. She and Miranda are truly prodigies, and Tyler was amazing. I know Laura, Anthony and Rayce were deserving of their wins on their seasons, but the other 3 are just as talented and I cannot believe they didn't win.

Poor Tate always peaked too early. His looks were crazy.

Tate is always my answer.

Mine, too, and definitely Emily. I thought Gage should have won as well. I thought his Hansel and Gretel was much better than Connor's frog, even with the throat that expanded.

Wasn’t Tate the same season as Laura?

Yeah, she's awesome too, so I feel kind of bad to say he should've won. His swan in the finale was amazing, but his other makeup was like a homeless chimney man? She had him fairly beat.

Laura didn’t even win her season either though. Nicole did. And while I liked Nicole’s stuff, I always felt it was unfair to Laura since Nicole was voted off and absent for a few of the challenges. Whereas Laura was there for every challenge.

yeah and didn't viewers get to vote that season? I always wondered who the regular judges would have voted for. I know Glen would have chosen Laura (his favorite artist).

Didn’t they do viewer votes for all the early seasons?

I thought it was just the season Nicole won.

Tate Steinsiek season 1. He has done an amazing amount of work with a great outcomes but not a judge's favourites.

Walter EASILY had the best look in the season 10 finale, my man was fucking robbed. (pun intended)

Hardcore agree!

The final challenge can be a bit unfair, IMO, because it really becomes about "who can manage a team better" as opposed to "who is the best all-around artist". I just rewatched season 8, and while Emily was probably the best and most imaginative artist for the season overall, I have to admit Darla was just better at bringing out everyone's strengths and managing her time. (Darla is also a great artist on her own, I'm not slamming her.)

agreed but at that point they know they’re great artists and it’s more a movie set hollywood challenge. No makeup artist does a production alone they have to execute their vision to others.

Yeah, that's definitely true. I just think it's kinda funny that--at least the way the show is edited--it seems like the idea that essentially won the competition for Darla in season 8 (turning the faun character into a wind instrument) wasn't even hers, it was Stephanie's.

imo

Tate.

Laura. but at least she won s5.

Emily. Darla is an amazing artist, this is more just a matter of my style preferencezzz.

Cig!!! but at least they won s11. Cig is my favorite artist from face off.

Emily for sure. Sometimes I wish the finally was based on the previous work too. Even Emily's bottom looks were way better than the best looks in other challenges.

Miranda is great but she really did have the weakest look her last two weeks. Would have loved to see her in the finale over Roy but there was no debating her bird was the weakest

Roy was a marvel to watch, but he sometimes let his love of construction overtake the challenge.

Derek season 3 Kris season 4 Evan season 9

I ran into Evan once at Walmart near Denver and didn't realize it was him until I left. My brain just didn't throw in tv options while it was trying to find the reference

Maybe not the entire season, as he had a pretty specific niche in terms of concepts, but there were a few challenges where I felt that Fox was robbed during season 4. Especially the superhero one oh my god I would read that comic in a heartbeat

Fox definitely got robbed that season… he always had some good concepts

Fox had the most fun with it. His Deadite was so good it looked like it walked off a Raimi set. I loved that huge double headed ogre, and the low-to-the-ground candy goblin thing that the judges eviscerated. He played with shape and scale and gimmicks in such a big way, instead of the endless "finely sculpted head and cowl" parade, which is lovely but constrained.

When I think back on pieces that stand out or embody what I want to see when I watch this show, it's Fox's Troma-ready creations that I recall the most as a whole, and one offs from other artists.

Unpopular opinion but I think Ben should have won season 9.

Tate all the way

Agree with Tyler. He is a fast molder, fabricator and painter. He rarely have problems executing his concepts and have numerous high and top looks. He got screwed badly in season 11 when he didn't make it to the finals.

Emily is good, but she had a few bottom looks in season 8 and shown at times to struggle. Miranda was awful in season 2 but very strong in season 5. I think she just lost her confidence at the end.

I would put season 9 Jordan into this picture. Dude won all but one Vs challenge when he came back for season 13. He's like Tyler. Doesn't show much signs of struggle when it comes to concept and execution of their makeups that the vast majority do.

Emily and Jordan are my faves by far and I wish they had won either of the seasons they were on

Tyler shouldve won S6. It still annoys me that Val highlighted in the finale that Rashaad only had a bottom look once. Yeh thats great... but Tyler only ever had 2 bottom looks and 4 wins compared to Rashaads 2.

Exactly!

I still don’t understand how Darla beat Emily. She had looks that were so terrible compared to Emily’s. Darla’s troll was horrible and yet she was a safe look???

Yeah I agree

Season 3: Roy

Pretty much everyone that has won was not the best in the group, just the most marketable. The top 4 typically only has 1 really talented creator, and the rest are there to flesh out diversity

16

u/Jarsky2 Jan 25 '22

Because of course women and POC can't just be talented, right?

0

u/helarco Dec 02 '22

lol no. they even got rid of some women and poc cus of this marketable rule

Niko was gone too soon in season 6. That guy was a beast.
