Bristle discs
Does anyone have or know of a source for these discs that doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

Guiz I need help.
I Need a MOD Who Can...
CSS the holy fuck out of this place. with pinstripes and chrome
take action when "magic in a bottle" advertisements appear
start shit with other subs, if for nothing else, than for glory.
I need an enthusiast...
Who is willing to do some interesting posts, like "on this day" "engine of the month" and "I have more gears than /r/deathrowdiesel had teeth" on a regular basis.
I realize that it's a bit hard to be that into a sub which isn't very active and competing for your free time with /r/gonewildcurvy and a horribly behind schedule 1980 Trans Am restomod project (that shouldn't have been that hard but had some hiccups along the way). and a lot of times, when you're home from work you just don't feel like clicking this sub. I get it. but the premise of this sub is really great and there are guys (and hopefully) women coming here all the time who need help and I really want them to get that from those of us who have a clue; because honestly...
we're the best mechanics on earth, and it isn't even close

got called out to fix this mess, story is unclear I guess they had another guy out here installing a climate control unit guess he found some burnt wires for outfitter system now truck won’t start seems like he blasted it with ether and gave up. I keep getting code for actuator circuit high or open, no fuses popped harness not damaged, resistance from ecu to pigtail is good, all power is there. Actuator ohms out at 2.5 so does new one. Threw a new one, started right up for a bit then died immediately with actuator code still there. Anybody run into anything like this? Bad ecu maybe?

Looking for recommendations on set of pickle fork. After beating out a drag link with a sledgehammer. Never again, not sure what sizes I would need to cover most class 8 applications.
Looking at these from mayhew.

Winch truck cable reel brake wouldn't release. Pissing air out of this valve here. Gasket blown out. Had no gasket stock. Out here in the freezing desolate oilfield one must improvise. Improvise I did. Behold the Gorilla Gasket.

Missing Communication from safety direct ECU. Got message in dash. 2023 Volvo vnl. Performed instrumental cluster update according to CBR from Volvo. I've had seen this issue in the past on other Volvo trucks. Noticed the blue connector that comes off the main connector from ECU in the cab overhead had either loose pins/wires or just loose connector and pushing all of them in and securing the connector usually fixed the issue. I was unable to this time around. Got no codes. Any Volvo tech know how the real tech to fixing this issue ? Thanks

I'm currently a student in a heavy diesel program at my local community college and I'm currently building a toolbox for when I graduate in August. My question is, how often do you use an amp clamp in a heavy duty setting? We've used one on the truck we work on in school but that was mostly for demonstration purposes and idk if I really need one for my toolbox. Also on the electrical topic, what multimeter do you guys use and what kind of price range should I be looking at? I don't want to cheap out but I don't know if I need something super fancy straight away.

18 international lt manual trans. when clutch is fully engaged all switches are flashing red until I let clutch out. Only happens when clutch pedal is to the ground and fully engaged. Anyone have an idea what could cause that? Switches are still operating correctly.

Any body familiar with these? When I plug in the power supply, I get 2 flashes and then nothing after that.

2014 Genie GTH1056, 10k lift, little over 3000 hours. The PTO driveshaft from the engine to the torque converter/transmission keeps breaking. The original was an OEM shaft, finally gave after developing a wobble at the rubber damper. Replaced with a solid steel shaft from a custom driveshaft fabricator, that one literally sheared in half after about 50 hours of use. Bit the bullet and ordered up a new OEM shaft from Terex, cost 6k with the controlled cutoff kit. Cutoff kit had already been installed, and does what it needs to do on the machine. That driveshaft lasted about 2 hours. Im at a loss, hydraulic pump pressures all check out, drained fluid in the transmission, which was murky, but no large pieces or indications of worn out parts. Can the torque converters on these machines develop enough resistance to shear a driveshaft? Both times it seems to have happened shortly after putting the machine into gear. Machine idles fine, and revs fine, all hydraulics work fine. To afraid to put it into gear, if it can break driveshafts I would think it could break an engine crank or worse.

I’m considering purchasing a 2004 Isuzu npr with 100k miles, the 5.2 diesel. A friend told me that some of these older models can be hard to get parts. Is this true? If so, at what years are parts more readily accessible?

anyone have one that they keep around all the time? I’ve ran into enough problems now to justify buying a multi meter but don’t want to go crazy and buy a 300$ one but don’t want to cheap out and buy a 30$ one. What’s good for around 100-125$ cad?

Hello looking for just career path advice for Think Big Cat student program. I am currently mid way through my 1 year Heavy Equipment vocational trade school and was looking at Think Big as an option besides just starting out completely entry with a Cat dealer. Is it still recommended to do their specialization or is the on the job experience just as good? I kind of want to just start with getting pay but I could do more school I have the means for it if any experienced techs have some insight much appreciated.

Hi everyone. I got a customer with a 2001-02 Isuzu NPR with the inline 4 diesel engine. I’m going to be doing some engine diag but am not too familiar with these engines. Im not the type to just wing things, so was going to buy a manual before beginning any diag.
His engine model is a 4HE1-XS. I cannot find a manual for that particular model but there are a few available on eBay for the 4HE1-TC model engine. My question is, will the “TC” manual have the relevant information I need for the “XS” model or is there a particular manual for that model? I would imagine a lot would cross reference but I’d rather just have the right thing if I’m buying it.
The complaint is crank no start. He’s had 3 other mechanics work on it. They’ve sent out the injection pump to get rebuilt, still won’t start. So I imagine I’ll be dealing with the fuel system but not sure yet. Google AI tells me that the difference between the TC and the XS was the XS has more power output, and some internal parts may be bigger/different. Hard telling what I’m getting into, but if I have the right manual I’ll be okay.

Anyone have experience with 3 cylinder Kubota? Just finished a rebuild on one in a b7100 tractor. Engine ran fine before just had a ton of blowby. Had the block sleeved, replaced pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket etc. We have had it running a few times. Runs great once you get it going but severely hard to start, runs rough at first and finally clears up. We have bled fuel lines multiple times, verified timing, 300+ psi on all 3 cylinders compression. Glow plugs are new also getting plenty of voltage. Any quick checks before we buy injectors? Possibly the residual fuel clogged them up while it was apart behind rebuilt?

Any tips and tricks for unfreezing stuck air disc brakes? Is there a spot you can beat on them like with a drum brake?
r/DieselTechs • u/Internal-Potato-8135 • 2d ago
Came in derated due to poor def quality. Tested def and it tested high. Drained def cleaned tank and replaced filter on pump. Can't get it out of derate. Any insight? TIA

When installing brake shoes ill always change the anchor pins/rollers, ill take out the old ones with a press we have. (Work up north, lots of rust)
However the bushings ill usually never take the extra effort and take those out. Ill leave the old ones in. Is this something I should be also changing?
