Mod Post Buying Cloth Diapers Outside the US

Hey ClothDiaps!

I'm updating the list of retailers and could use your help. Where do you buy diapers outside the US? This is for the FAQ so I'm going to make a list of countries in parent comments. Please respond to the appropriate country comment. If your country is not listed, feel free to add it. I'd appreciate links too if you can!

Mod Post Reporting Repost Bots

Hey Clothdiaps!

I'm sure some of you have noticed an increase in bots reposting photos to the sub. A big thank you to those of you who have been leaving comments and reporting.

If you come across a post that is suspicious and you recognize the photo or content as stolen and reposted, I'd appreciate if you could also leave a comment on the thread letting others know that it is a repost. Automod removes posts with three reports, at which point I can investigate and take action.

Mod Post A pause on image posts

Hey Clothdiaps!

In the continuing image repost bots saga, I've paused image posts.

A big thank you to those who are leaving comments and reporting the posts. We're currently seeing 2-4 bot posts a day but with your help, automod has been removing most posts within a day.

For the time being, if you wish to share an image, you can use an image hosting site (like imgur) and share the link in a comment.

Thank you!

Mod Post New rule? A note about recommending Facebook groups and other websites

Hey Clothdiaps,

This is half a call for feedback from the community and half a suggestion. There has been an uptick is people answering calls for help with recommending Facebook groups and other websites. There are plenty of fantastic resources available online. When people create posts seeking help, they have come to our community for support. Redirecting them off site adds an extra step to getting the help they need. Many don't use Facebook and if they do, many group are private, so it takes time to be approved. If you have the knowledge, I ask that you share it with them directly.

My suggestion: Creating a rule where help/recommendations need to stay on site. Mentions of other communities would need to be in the vein of, "I was having this same problem. ___ community helped me sort out my wash routine. I have a __ (washing machine) and this is my current routine: ___ .

Thoughts, opinions?

Mod Post Call for Moderators!

Hi ClothDiaps!

Are you interested in moderating this amazing community? I'm not going anywhere but as both of my kids have potty trained and I'm currently renovating a house, I'd love for a few members to joining me in moderating.

I invite you to fill out the ClothDiaps Moderator Application. You don't need to have experience as a moderator nor direct experience with cloth (I was a fresh new parent when I came on-board), though both are a plus.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need clarification on anything.

Mod Post Reporting Sales and Self-Promotions

Hello ClothDiaps!

As the participation in the sub increases, I've received an increase in reports for Rule 4. Sales & Self-Promotion. The rule is as follows:

Post all sales and self-promotions in "Thrifty Thursday". Please reach out to us if you wish to self-promote your wares on the sub. Unapproved advertising, spam, giveaways and comments containing self-promotion will be removed. We ask that all store owners, brands and bloggers update their flair identifying them.

Years ago, we would have accounts spam affiliate links to cloth diapers sales. We also received feedback from the community that they did not want to see advertisements in the sub feed. This rule was designed to address this.

Now, we have a few small businesses, both cloth diaper brands and store associates, that are active members of the community. They have been very active in helping members troubleshoot their wash routines and make stash recommendations. We want to continue inviting this participation, it's how people get their questions answered! These members are aware that all affiliate links and promotional materials are to be posted in Thrifty Thursday.

At the same time, they make things that they are proud of and/or they just really love their diapers. Like the rest of the community, they are welcome to post photos of their own kids wearing cloth diapers and share things they've made. By request, we added a new tag recently, "I made this"! Again, these members know that they may not include affiliate or promotional links.

I ask that the community continue to report content that goes against the rule, but know that reports on these posts are being ignored. Reddit is rolling out a new tool that will allow moderators to mute people who abuse the report tool. I don't have many details yet but I will be looking into its use once it's rolled out.

Thank you,

Jai

Mod Post 2018 Surveypalooza Results are Here!

Hello Cloth Diaps!

We hope everyone had wonderful holidays and enjoyed time with their family. We wanted to thank everyone that took time to answer the Surveypalooza in December. As promised, we have the results for you below:

  • The results are a bit long, but they are in a webpage so you're able to click through to what interests you and we've included visuals!
  • We have responded to most, if not all, comments, so please take a look!
  • Surveypalooza Results are here!

Changes and Clarifications

Part of our goal with the survey was to get some input from you to see what is working and what isn't working. After looking at the results and talking among the mod team, here is what we've decided. All of this information is available in the Surveypalooza Results if you would rather look at it there.

Cloth Diapering 101

About 20% of our membership are currently expecting. We had some comments about the volume of posts asking the same questions (parents-to-be feeling overwhelmed by cloth, how to get started, etc). We do have Wondering Wednesday for general questions regarding cloth diapers and getting started. However, we can't possibly redirect all posts to a weekly thread as such, users are welcome to post their questions as they come up. I hope the community continues to share their experiences getting started with cloth and troubleshooting, survey respondents appreciate all your help!

We've been meaning to update Cloth 101 with visuals for a while. The Cloth Diapering 101 resource is now live. It is an evolving document and will continue to be updated (FAQ is next). If you have a suggestion for a topic that Cloth 101 should cover, please let us know! It can be found on the sidebar on both old.reddit and the redesign. It can also be located on the menu bar on the redesign and under "community info" on mobile (3 dots, top right corner).

Rule 2. Don't Start Fires

Discussion posts are allowed and welcome. However, users shared concerns about off-topic drama and gossip posts. Please downvote posts that do not add to the sub and report posts that go directly against our rules.

If you are posting controversial posts to offend, gossip, or start drama your post will be removed. Remember, this community is a support group for parents and caregivers.

Rule 3. Don't Post Links

Links ARE allowed, link posts are not. This rule is two-fold. We get a lot of link spam that is irrelevant to cloth diapering. Automoderator takes care of most of these posts and the community does a great job of reporting posts that do sneak through.

We also want to foster community and discussion. We ask that if you are going to post a link to an article or product, do so as a text post and comment on the content.

We continue to encourage users to link when making product recommendations. Affiliate links are flagged. We check the moderation queue daily and approve most link comments.

Rule 6. Self-Promotion

Going forward, we are asking store owners, brands and bloggers to update their flair identifying them and cease from self-promoting. All sales and promotions will be redirected to Thrifty Thursday and standalone posts or comments removed. That said, store and brand owner and bloggers do have a wealth of knowledge to share and are valuable members of our community! We do want to welcome and encourage their continued participation.

---

I think that is the big stuff. Everything else, including the most popular diapers, can be found HERE.

Mod Post Surveypalooza September 2020

Hello Cloth Diaps!

We're going to try this a little early this year. We've recently hit 20,000 members (!!!) and we're up an average of 6000 unique views a month since April. For seasoned subscribers and those who are new to our community, we'd love to get some input from you on what you like, what you don't like, what you think works, and what we could do better!

Questions are separated into 4 sections (Sub, Diapers, Washing, Demographic). All questions are optional and responses are completely anonymous (It is a Google Form and it is NOT collecting email addresses). The survey should take 5-15 minutes. We thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this survey.

You can find the surveypalooza here. We'll keep it open until the end of September and release the results in early October.

I'd like to extend a big thank you to everyone who asks questions, comments, and shares their love of cloth here. I'd also like to give a special shout out to those who have been answering the FAQ posts (Overnight diapers, Where to buy cloth diapers outside of the US). You make this community what it is and I appreciate everyone of you! Thank you for taking the time to answer this survey and help improve our community.

P.S. If you have any questions or comments that need immediate attention, please comment down below.

Mod Post Surveypalooza results

Hey Clothdiaps!

Forever ago we had an our annual Surveypalooza. Regrettably, my life got crazy between the pandemic, a second kid, and then going back to work. I finally took the time to organize the results . It's not the beautiful Google site I've created in years past, but you can view the summary here.

We had a similar number of responses (271) and our sub has continued to grow (23,7K members!). In the past 6 months, we've averaged 240,000 page views and 25,000 unique page views a month! The majority of people who responded are lurkers or only post once or twice as needed to troubleshoot.

There was some really great feedback this year both about the rules and ideas for posts/events:

There was a suggestion for discussions on how people reduce waste in other aspects of their life, a request for reviews has come up a few times too. If you have an idea for a post, please go for it! Reviews would be a wonderful addition to the sub. I don't think that's something that needs to be organized, but please let me know if we want to come up with a suggested template/ format for those.

Tags

  • "Pro tip" is for the tips from experiences users
  • "Recommendations" are requests for brand suggestions
  • "Leaks Everywhere," "How much detergent," and "Fit check," do fit under the "Please send help" umbrella. Essentially they are all requests for troubleshooting help with a specific tag for each issue. If your issue doesn't fit under one of those, then use "Please send help." I used to moderate this heavily, but I haven't in the last year. Has this been an issue? Do we need to review/ reduce/ add tags?

Rule 5. Don't send OP on a wild goose chase. This rule came about because community members would comment on threads seeking help with just a link to a FB group or a help information that was behind a paywall. The full rule is laid out below:

If you have a suggestion or advice please share it in a comment. While there are plenty of fantastic resources available online, redirecting users off site adds an extra step to getting the help they need. Many users don't have Facebook, Instagram or TikTok. Many groups are private so it takes time to be approved. Mentions of other communities must include the advice or solution from the source that is relevant to OPs question.

There was a comment that "maybe someone has seem all the standard advice available, they may need to go elsewhere and look." Often we have people who started on FB or youtube or blogs and are coming here to sort through the jumble of information in their head. I've also seen many comments where people just don't have FB. Linking off site has not been helpful in the past and the community voted to implement this rule. I appreciate those of you who have edited your comments after a reminder of the rule.

---

I think that's it for now. If you have any questions or comments, I'd love to hear them. Drop them below!

Mod Post 2019 Surveypalooza Results are Here!

  • We have responded to most comments, so please take a look!
  • Surveypalooza Results are here!

Changes and Clarifications

Part of our goal with the survey was to get some input from you to see what is working and what isn't working. Most respondent are quite happy with the state of the sub. We've clarified some of the tags and rules.

Rule 1

There is some confusion with automod removing comments that contain swearing. Rule 1 explicitly states: "To protect against inappropriate spam, posts that contain swearing are held for review." We get a lot of spam. Most of it is links to cheap clothing websites, but we also get some adult content. Automod requires the filters to do it's job. Unfortunately, that means some posts and comments get held up too.

We do manually check all of automod's spam removals, and we do approve posts that contain swearing as long as it's not directly at anyone in particular. You may message the moderators to expedite the approval process, but we will get to it as soon as we are able.

There was also concern about Rule 1 being applied inconsistently when comments turn personal or critical. Unfortunately we can't personally read and approve every comment. Please report posts or comments that begin to target users personally and that are mean spirited.

Rule 4 and 5

We'v deleted some of the rules that were not entirely necessary. Not only have we not had issues with Rule 4 and 5 in the past, they are covered under the Reddit Code of Conduct.

Rule 6

Rule 6 (self-promotion) is now Rule 4. Otherwise, it's status quo.

Most Popular

And of course, the fun stuff: ClothDiaps Most Popular!

I think that's it for now. If you have any questions or comments, we've love to hear them. Drop them below!

Mod Post Followup Housekeeping Post! New Mods and Old Rules, but published!

Hi Everyone!
Follow up housekeeping post!

In response to our call for mods we had a few responses and have some new additional mods in the sub now. You'll see u/Jaishirri and u/ryvir around here with the mod tag, and doing mod things (like enforcing rules, approving modqueue posts, making announcements, etc). They'll also be doing a bunch behind the scenes, like figuring out CSS and help give our sub a little more modern look. Thank you all for volunteering to help us out! Please introduce yourselves down in the comments!

We also realized we don't have our rules really officially published anywhere, so we'll be doing that as well! Since I have your attention, I'll go ahead and give a reminder of the few rules we do have:

Of course, please follow all of Reddit's official rules and all of Reddiquette. Please read the Cloth Diapering 101 resources before posting a question.

Don’t be a jerk

Be kind and considerate in your interactions with everyone on this subreddit. Speak respectfully, assume positive intent, recognize that other users may have a different opinion. Rude and offensive comments may be removed.

Don’t start fires

Fire-starter posts will be removed and you’ll be asked to resubmit your post with Rule #1 in mind. Circumcision is a controversial topic. There are places on Reddit where this can be discussed. This subreddit is not one of them.

Don’t posts links

Please post links in a text post with some context or discussion. Pictures are fine and encouraged. Be mindful, any pictures posted without content in the form of a comment may be removed and you’ll be asked to resubmit your picture.

Don’t block the moderators

Self-explanatory. Banning the moderators prevents us from doing our job. Blocking a moderator will result in an immediate permaban.

Do upvote and downvote

Use upvotes and downvotes as Reddit intended. Upvote posts you think deserve more recognition. Downvote harmful posts (trolls, harassment, completely off topic posts).

Do share sales!

Come across a good deal on cloth diapers? Please share in the Sales thread. (usually every other Friday) Please reach out to us if you wish to self-promote your wares on the sub. Spam or obvious advertising by those not active in our community (left up to moderator discretion) will be removed.

Feel free to reach out to any of us, leave comments, or use the "message the moderators" link to send us a message if you have any questions.

Mod Post ClothDiaps Rules Update

Hi r/ClothDiaps! I'm working through some general housekeeping and have updated (and clarified) our rules.

Rule 1. Don't be a jerk

Be kind and considerate in your interactions with everyone. Speak respectfully, assume positive intent, recognize that other users may have a different opinion.

To protect against inappropriate spam, all posts that contain swearing are held for review. You may message the mods if you wish to expedite the approval process.

Rule 2. Don't Start Fires

Discussion posts are allowed and welcome. Fire-starter posts will be removed (including gossip and off-topic and/or off-site drama).

Circumcision is a controversial topic. There are places on Reddit where this can be discussed. This subreddit is not one of them.

Please downvote posts that do not add to the sub and report posts that go directly against our rules.

In essence, if you are posting controversial posts to offend, gossip, or start drama your post will be removed.

Affiliate links are flagged and your comment may be held for review. We check the moderation queue frequently and approve most link comments.

Rule 4. Self-Promotion

Post all sales and self-promotions in "Thrifty Thursday". Please reach out to us if you wish to self-promote your wares on the sub. Unapproved advertising, market research, spam and comments containing self-promotion will be removed. We ask that all store owners, brands and bloggers update their flair identifying them.

Mod Post New Weekly Threads, Flairs, and the Reddit Redesign

Happy Monday Clothdiaps!

Thank you so much for your input and suggestions for weekly threads. This community continues to grow (8k subscribers!!!) and we're very excited to increase participation across the sub. We know that while cloth can come with a learning curve and some trouble shooting from time to time, there are a lot of positive aspects too. There is a reason we all cloth our fluffy bums!

The new weekly threads are as follows:

Marvelous Monday: Share your OOTD pictures of your little one wearing your favourite patterns.

Off-Topic Tuesday: Related or unrelated community chat and/or rants. Let's get to know each other!

Wondering Wednesday: Formerly the weekly "Newbie Thread". Ask the clothdiaps community all of your cloth questions.

Thrifty Thursday: Formerly the biweekly "Good Deal Friday". Share sales and any deals you come across. Have you found a stash you're interested in buying but unsure about? Ask the community for their input before you buy.

Fail Friday: Funny parenting or cloth fails.

Suds Saturday: Formerly "Wash Wednesday". Everything laundry related: questions, troubles, advice and successes!

Success Sunday: Calling on all unsolicited advice! Share your wisdom.

These threads will be distinguished but not stickied. As always, you don't have to wait for a specific day to post an OOTD picture, your stash haul, or ask questions.

Changing gears: We've added post flairs! Please flair your posts. It'll save me some work and it will help community and non-community members find specific troubleshooting solutions and recommendations.

Flairs are:

Let's Chat

Funny

Recommendations

Please send help! Generally troubleshooting

Leaks Everywhere! Leaks troubleshooting

It Stinks! Smell troubleshooting

How much soap? Wash troubleshooting

Pro Tip! Unsolicited advice from the wise

How's my stash? Stash pictures!

A steal? Gathering input from the community on used lots from Craigslist, Kijiji, Ebay, etc.

Lastly, and this is more to satisfy my curiosity: show of hands how many people have switched over to the Reddit Redesign?

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please message the mod team!

Mod Post Reporting posts: What is and what is not "self-promotion"

Hi ClothDiaps community!

I've been fielding more reports on posts for violating Rule 4. Sales & Self-Promotion. I'd like to clarify quickly what is allowed and what is not allowed under this rule.

Post all sales and self-promotions in "Thrifty Thursday". Please reach out to us if you wish to self-promote your wares on the sub. Unapproved advertising, spam and comments containing self-promotion will be removed. We ask that all store owners, brands and bloggers update their flair identifying them.

As a seller or brand ambassador, you are asked to identify yourself using your flair. You may share sales, new releases and advertisements with our community in the Thrifty Thursday thread. Stand alone promotional posts will be removed.

Community members (consumers) are welcome to share hauls and fluff mail. You are welcome to share the brand information and may link to the website (a plain, direct link. Affiliate links are removed by automod).

Examples of a post that follow the rules: My order came today!

Mod Post Surveypalooza 2019

Hello Cloth Diaps!

It's that time of year again! We'd love to get some input from you on what you like, what you don't like, what you think works, and what we could do better!

Questions are separated into 4 sections (Sub, Diapers, Washing, Demographic). All questions are optional and responses are completely anonymous. The survey should take 5-15 minutes. We thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this survey.

You can find the surveypalooza here. We'll keep it open for the next three weeks and release the results in early January.

I'd like to extend a big thank you to everyone who asks questions, comments, and shares their love of cloth here. You make this community what it is and I appreciate everyone of you! Thank you for taking the time to answer this survey and help improve our community.
