Civil Liberties 📜 Russia’s parliament is discussing a law that would punish people who speak openly about not having kids – the “propaganda of childlessness” – with fines of up to $4,300. The goal of the legislation is to reverse Russia’s demographic decline

Hmm, seems like a war hungry government trying to turn its denizens into baby making generators so they can continue to be annoying with their dumb weapons and egotistical ideas

u/PermiePagan Oct 20 '24

I'm so confused, are you talking about Russia or America right now? That statement applies to both 100%.

11

u/GasPoweredStick420 Oct 20 '24

Definitely both sadly. To many old white guys making the decisions for everyone

Especially since Putin has asked for peace talks on more than a few occasions. Of course CNN and the rest of mainstream media won't tell you that. If they did say anything I didn't hear/see it.

A: i've seen it covered extensively on american news, both ukrainian rejected peace deals and russian rejected peace deals. B: the only viable peace deal is the complete withdrawal of russian forces from ukrainian territory

Absolutely disgusting. In USA they ban abortions and in Russia they even do this. God forbid we stop flooding the planet with humans, taking the living space of all other animals away.

Something dystopian that isn’t about Palestine?

Observations from prominent Russians about "traditional Russian values" in action:

“A nation that roams Europe and is looking for something to destroy, to simply dust everything.”

– F. M. Dostoevsky

"We are not a nation, we are a crazy hell.”

– Vasyli Rozanov

"Ah, how hard it is to live in Russia, in this place full of the stench of physical and moral deception, a place of wickedness, lies and wickedness.”

– Sergei Aksakov

"The most important sign of victory for the Russian people is their cruelty full of sadism.”

– Maxim Gorky

"The Russian is the biggest and most naughty liar in the world.”

– Ivan S. Turgenev

"A people who hate freedom, worship slavery, love chains on their hands and feet, defiled physically and morally… ready at any time to defile everything and everywhere.”

– Ivan C. Shmeliov

"People regardless of their smallest duty, the smallest justice, the most insignificant truth, the people who do not recognize human dignity, do not generally recognize human freedom or free thought… Alas, how sharp the Russian language is!”

– Aleksandr Pushkin

"We are not a people, but cattle, rats, wild hordes of villains and murderers.”

– Mikhail Bulgakov

Wow. I had no idea they hate themselves so much.

1

u/Solbuster Oct 23 '24

We don't. Most of those quotes are fake, not legitimate ones. Only Turgenev here has his actual quote and even that one is taken out of the context

1

u/AntiFacistBossBitch Oct 23 '24

Ok, thank you.

Do you have some real quotes that more accurately convey the Russian spirit ?

Here in Bendery, the chief commander of the fortress, Lieutenant General Olshevsky, is a very kind, very fat man, a Russian man in the full sense of the word, i.e. representing a combination of courage, good nature, cordiality, simplicity, humility with what constitutes a necessary attribute of every Russian person acting, not living in a peasant community.

Ah, how hard, how unbearably hard it is sometimes to live in Russia, in this stinking environment of dirt, vulgarity, lies, deceptions, abuses, good little scoundrels, hospitable bribe-takers, hospitable rogues - the fathers and benefactors of bribe-takers! I did not write these lines about Olshevsky, I do not know him, but in my imagination the whole image of governance, the whole administrative machination appeared.

Ivan Aksakov, Letters to the Relatives, 1855 November 23, Bendery. He was talking about bureaucrats, not people in general

The Russian people are a peaceful people. It seems hard to argue with that. But sometimes even a pigeon bites. This happens when its feathers are pulled out of its wings one by one while it is alive.

Vasily Rozanov, Fallen Leaves, 1912

Maxim Gorky actually wrote his quote though, I was wrong about that. That being said the quote itself comes from "About Russian Peasantry" from 1922. Gorky wrote about Civil War and its brutality, and when saying Russian people, he meant peasant class, rather than people in general. In the end he draws conclusions that it's just human nature that is so cruel and that it's just peasants nature as beasts. So it's taken out of context. Gorky was basically a classist looking down on lower class after they succeeded in revolution.

There is a devilish sophistication in Russian cruelty, something subtle and refined. This quality can hardly be explained by the words "psychosis" or "sadism", words that, in essence, explain nothing at all. The legacy of alcoholism? I do not think that the Russian people have been poisoned by the poison of alcohol more than other peoples of Europe, although it is possible that, given the poor nutrition of the Russian peasantry, the poison of alcohol affects the psyche more strongly in Russia than in other countries where the people's food is more abundant and varied.

It can be assumed that the development of intricate cruelty was influenced by reading the lives of the holy great martyrs, the favorite reading of literate people in remote villages.

Such thoughts, such feelings and assessments cannot arise in the soul of a Russian peasant. The boundless plane on which wooden, thatched villages are tightly huddled has a poisonous property of emptying a person, sucking out his desires. The peasant will go beyond the village, look into the emptiness around him, and after a while he feels that this emptiness has flowed into his soul. Nowhere around are there any lasting traces of labor and creativity.

Gorky, About Russian Peasantry, 1922

Also a bit of a context. When talking about Russians, Gorky also talked about Belarus and Ukraine too as they were integral part of Russian Empire. Ukraine he didn't like in particular and considered it "a dialect". So when he was asked to translate his works into Ukrainian, he passionately declined

Dear Alexey Andreyevich! I am categorically against shortening the story "Mother". It seems to me that a translation of this story into the Ukrainian dialect is also unnecessary. I am very surprised by the fact that people, setting the same goal for themselves, not only assert the difference in dialects - they strive to make the dialect a "language", but also oppress those Great Russians who find themselves in the minority in the area of this dialect. Under the old regime, I protested against such phenomena as much as I could. It seems to me that under the new regime we should strive to eliminate everything that prevents people from helping each other. Otherwise, it turns out funny: some strive to create a "world language", while others act just the opposite.

May 7, 1926, A. Peshkov. Letter to the to the director of the state publishing house of the Ukrainian SSR A.A. Slisarenko

So really when Gorky talked about Russians, he meant Ukrainians too. Belarussians as well. He didn't differentiate. So the quote is misleading because he referred to Eastern Slavs in general

I hope that clears up things nicely, finding and verifying sources took some time but I'd rather prefer people wouldn't spread misinformation about dead people of my culture because of an easy scapegoating. That doesn't mean that all of them were big supporters of Russia at the time but most of them wouldn't say stuff like this because despite criticism writers generally tended to love the country and its people.

I'd honestly put more quotes from other writers like Gogol and Tolstoys, Karamazovs, Griboedov, Saltykov-Schedrin and etc. But I'm afraid I'm running out of time so I limited myself to writers provided by the OP. If you're interested yourself, you have the names and can read up the books or poems if you'd like

Yeah, taking money away from what's already a super costly undertaking (having children) is going to go super well

u/McRaeWritescom Oct 20 '24

Need more people to throw into the war, it seems. More meat for the grinder. Putin cranking the grinder handle as hard and as fast as he can. Bastard.

ah yes, because talking about kids instantly inseminates people and immediately produces a healthy growing baby in the womb, and not talking about kids leave you infertile.

weird but I understand. Russias population demographics are bad, and if they dont control it they as a race will go extinct just like japanese and south koreans will

6

u/Sensitive_Prior_5889 Oct 20 '24

The current population of Russia is almost what the entire world population was like during antiquity. But yeah sure they are going "extinct" if they do not gang-press people to make more babies so overpopulation gets even worse.
