Disability

I have been dealing wuth my low visionnfor about 6 to 7ish years. The only diagnosis I have so far is the vague chronic uveitis. My left eye is 20/2400 and my right I'm unsure atm but it's no great. Iv done test on test on test. All coming back negative with the most recent being a biopsy on my left eye. So imnwondering what yalls experience has been with applying/ getting disability. What should I know. Do I apply like anyone else would or is there a separate application or website to go to for visual impairments. 8m in louisiana if that makes any difference

Question Vocational Rehab reached out to me recently, they're trying to talk me into going back to college

VR got in touch with me the other day to see how things are going for me. Explained to them what I'm doing, but concerned about my future. Told them I had zero savings and nothing really going for me only working a part time job in my 40s. Told them I'd like to make more per hour, but I'd probably need a degree to see wages above 20 an hour.

So, they got back with me today saying VR can help me through college as long as they know I've got an end goal for. I was spending some time looking at local online courses and it seems a Bachelors in Business Admin might be a good way to go.

If I go back to college, it'd probably be another 2 years to finish a BS/BA in something since I'm 15 credits shy of an associates in general education.

Just curious if anyone has suggestions for other degrees that would land me a decent job afterwards? Appreciate any feedback, thanks!

How to get message out to local visually impaired community?

Hello! My mom is blind and the president of a blind association/group in her county. She has been the president for many years and has consistently provided a community to many people with visual impairments. The association hosts lunches, parties, and various other get togethers. They also provide education like teaching those with visual impairments how to use various Apple products and other technology that promotes accessibility. They answer phone calls all the time and give information to people navigating new impairments on where they can access support.

Unfortunately, COVID took a toll on their membership. They are functioning with very low numbers right now and are struggling to get people to come out to the association and recreate the community they once had. They still consistently get phone calls asking for support, but again it’s hard to get those same people to come out.

My mom has posted announcements in the newspaper and I have gone to Facebook to post information about the association on various town groups within our county. I was just wondering if this sub had any other ideas for how to connect to those with visual impairments in our surrounding area that we have not yet tried. I would appreciate any and all ideas!

Side note: Just wanted to say my mom has been blind since she was 5 years old and is the coolest. She raised two children, was my Girl Scout troop leader, got her associates degree, and is the president of this association. She spends all of her time volunteering and is now enjoying her time being a grandma. I have the utmost respect for all of you and have been a member of this sub for a while just to stay updated on what’s going on in the community!

Thank you in advance :)

Wall ovens

Does anyone have experience with an accessible wall oven for someone who is totally blind? I'm interested in using manual knobs that actually control the temperature and/or reliable voice control through Alexa. It seems that there are only a few options with knobs and those don't always control the temperature without visual feedback on a display. My wife is sighted so we'd like something that both of us can use. Any ideas?

A 2024 up to date instructions about installing emacspeak and working tts on various os and/or via ssh

Hello redditors,

Hope you can all see me doing well! I can't see myself like probably lots of people out there here :D

So! Without further ado...

I own a mac, play with several linux vm when I have time on vmware on windows as well as mac, and have 1 pi400.

1 I would like to know especially for the pi400 how can I install emacspeak (which I can do actually), and especially have a working tts on the pi400? I know it doesn't have jac, but my guess is that via any of the 3 usb ports any standard usb-jack should work? I know there are some specificities about linux and audio drivers especially on the raw terminal with these standard connector I am not able to sort out. Pi400 is on raspbian, ideally I'd like to be able to reproduce this with arch too. I am able to install brltty and have my display work with the pi directly without problem, but even with speakup I have never been able to actually root the sound properly, or even simply test espeak with outputing a string to it. Same problem with my pi3b+ which had a jack.

2 For the mac same request, I'd like to know how I can get speach out of that thing on macos native terminal.

3 Generally speaking, I'd also like to know how we can root audio of emacspeak via ssh I know it's possible.

I've read all sorts of random dispersed doc on the web about that but never got to make it work.

I'm preficient with dev tools so no problem if I have to compile stuff from scratch.

4 Additionally, same request for chromeos! :)

Thanks a lot!

5 How is the development state of orca these days? I tried orca last time just one year before it gets chromium support. Linux accessibility seems to be a mess, does mathml even work with any screen reader? Also there was another screen reader in the making in very early beta state for linux but lost its github I saw it once, odacious or something phonetically similar.

PS: u/admin tell me if I'm posting this completely wrong.

Question I’m partially blind in my right eye..but what has it been like for you?

So, I’ve been partially blind in my right eye all my life. I can basically only see through a bit of the peripherals in my right eye, except for mainly the top left..I can’t see anything there. All the rest is just “blank”.

I never paid mind to it, except for when I was 6 and tried cheating during the left eye/right eye test and the teachers noticed that I was peeking. I then got seen by doctors, but there were no follow ups and by the time I wanted to be seen for it again, they said it was too late to possibly recover my vision. I also noticed because I could never see in 3d, lols.

Anywho, I really want to know other people’s experiences. Those who have partial vision in one eye, have never had vision in one eye, or have suddenly lost vision in one eye..what is it like? What are your experiences?

It’s always been very interesting to me, but I’ve never known anyone who was also blind in one eye.

Should I join NFB?

Has anyone joined NFB or ACB and attended their meetings? What’s it like? Is it more like a support group or more for community service? I haven’t read good things about NFB on Reddit.

Advice People don’t take my relationship seriously because my boyfriend is blind.

I’ve been dating my boyfriend now for three months. It’s a new relationship and we are both very happy, communicative, and love one another very much!

One thing that truly hurts me is that important people in my life (family and close friends) do not take it seriously due to his blindness. At first, I thought it was because it’s long distance, but after asking about people’s doubts, it is his blindness.

It doesn’t usually bother me, but with Christmas coming up and extended family coming into town, I can already feel the questions, slow head nodding, and “what if’s”.

I’m flying out to him in January for a week, and I still feel like most of my friends and family doubt the way things will go just because he is blind.

How do I explain to my family that his blindness is not a weakness and that it is very much possible to be in a relationship with him? How do I further explain that what we have is a very real connection and that he is a wonderful man to me? I would say I shouldn’t let it bother me and I should just move on from what others think, but it’s different when it’s coming from the people I love.

Any advice is appreciated!

Clothing Identification?

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this here before, but I’m in the VRT field and an issue that I often run into with clients is clothing identification. If a client has enough remaining vision that they can see most colors, and it’s a matter of navy vs. black, I usually suggest using safety pins as markers on all their navy. However, with clients who have no remaining vision, or are at a point of not being able to discern color, I don’t feel like I have a simple solution. I use the Reizen labeling wand a TON, and although it’s advertised as being able to go on clothing, the labels typically fall off before the clothes make it to the wash. Does anyone have any thoughts on simpler solutions?

Technology Night Vision Glasses

Hi all, my girlfriend has Stargardts and has very little nigh vision. Her vision during the day is fairly good although she isn't able to drive. I wanted to get something to help with her walking around on the sidewalk at night. I'm looking for something like night vision goggles that do not look like you're out on the hunt in the middle of the city. Is there anything like that? Something that is low profile and looks somewhat like glasses but has some infrared or similar technology to help with night vision? Thanks.

Questions on 1) Best assistive technology for iPad Pro to study anatomy & physiology & 2) Academic strategist in Canada?

I’m requesting funding for assistive technology through Alberta Student Aid, specifically for an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil and hiring an academic strategist. It’s through the tech & equipment grants for students with disabilities. I’m approved by my institution already so I just need to identify which items I’ll request.

1. For those who have studied Anatomy and Physiology: Have you used any speech-to-text software or other apps/tools (besides the ones native to Apple/iPad Pro) that aid in memorization, active recall, or retrieval practice? If so, which ones were the most helpful, and why?

2. Has anyone worked with an academic strategist before? I’m in Canada and have never used one, but I’m open to the idea as I transition into healthcare education, which is a different field from my previous studies. If you have, how did they help you, and do you have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your insights and suggestions!

Technology How to use Facebook when blind and best microphone tv remote ?

My 76 y.o. Mom is recently blind this year. She hasn’t used the computer in 9 months and she used to use it everyday to surf the Web, check email, use FB to connect with distant friends and family. Up until now she hasn’t wanted too, as she processes all the drastic changes in her life but now I think she might be ready to learn another new skill so we bought her a Galaxy Tab for Christmas. How do I help her do this again? I don’t know anything about tech but I will learn so I can help her learn. Also she is having so much trouble using her TV. She has a Hisense Smart Tv and uses the Xumo Stream Box to ’Watch’ Spectrum cable TV. It’s awful and so glitchy and the voice remote is terrible. What will be better for tv access? Thank you so much for any advice.

Does anyone have experience with working AI jobs?

I wanted to make some money doing gig work/part time work, and I was wondering about jobs that rate AI writing or training AI. Does anyone have any recommendations? Are the websites that AI computes use compatible with screen readers?

Advice Flying alone tomorrow

Hello. I’m flying in the U.S. tomorrow by myself. At night. I’m absolutely terrified. I know I can request help to get to the gate and possibly pre boarding, but is there anything else on the plane that I can do/ask about? Does anyone have any experience flying at night or flying alone? This will be my first time flying at night and my first time flying alone that I remember. Any tips would be great! Thanks!

Question JBL iOS headphones app accessibility with VoiceOver

Greetings everyone. I am wondering if anyone has tried the jbl headphones iOS app using voiceover to control jbl headphones and or ear buds? I am looking at purchasing a pair of jbl tour one m2 over ear headphones and from the limited use of the jbl headphones app, it seems very accessible. Unfortunately I can only go so far within the app so if anyone who has used this app can comment, I and others would appreciate it. Thanks everyone.

Looking for anaffordable gym in Manhattan

There seem to be quite a few blind people in Manhattan, so I figured I'd ask this question here. I live on the upper east side and there do not seem to be many affordable gyms in the area. The closest would be Crunch for $93 per month. What gyms are other blind New Yorkers using? Do any have trainers who are used to working with blind people?

Question Did you have to be told that sight was a thing?

I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, but the thought occurred to me the other night about my daughter and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head. For people that are born with no vision/completely blind, do you remember a point as a young child where someone explained to you the concept of sight & visuals? Or did you just come to know this from context clues?

My baby girl is 15 months old and was born blind, so having no vision is all she’s ever known. It makes sense to me that the idea of visuals is completely foreign to her at this point, but will I have to explain to her that most other people can see someday?

"I wear glasses so I know what it's like" oh no you don't!

Anyone else fed up of sighted people saying this? Along with being "devastated" about needing glasses? I'd love to be in the situation where glasses were actually helpful.

Given that these people drive, can read without aids (my eyes shake so glasses and aids aren't that helpful) and can do things like crossing the road and actually see the traffic, it's hardly comparable
