I know this is going to get the usual remarks from the bitter and unempathetic, but it's Christmas guys.

Very predictable that the ER is where the encampment population will end up once the camps get shut down.

With all the debate going on it's a shame that people STILL don't know the difference between a warming center, a shelter, and an encampment. Even in this thread, it's blah, blah, blah encampments.

The Mayor and Simcoe County seem to have decided it would be economically prudent to let people freeze death. They probably did a feasibility study to find out how much money they save if X number of people die this winter and thought, hey!, that's a pretty good idea! I mean, who cares about the poor, disenfranchised and mentally ill anyways? It's not going to cost them votes or their jobs, so....

Mayor Mc Conservative is laughing. He led the charge on being able to fine the homeless.

With his new UBER mayoral power. Couldn’t wait to use that!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤮🤬

Pay for a cab to take them to the mayor's house. First you provide alternatives,  then dismantle the encampment NOT the other way around

Toronto paid for bus tickets to bring them all to Barrie in the first place. Everywhere uses Barrie as a virtual dumping ground. These people deserve proper services. Barrie has no infrastructure set up for that influx. These are human beings, regardless of the season. We all become better people at Christmas? We should be all year round just my humble opinion. That being said. We ALL live in glass houses. One slip and fall and you end up on opioids, mental illness, a tragedy you were not prepared for, your home and all you know lost forever? Who is ever prepared for any of this? I am rambling now but I wanted to say that we need to remember these people are someone’s son, daughter, mother, father, or even grandparents. Dignity is free.

I agree with the rest of your comment.  Just not the beginning. No one is dumping anyone here. They’re not bussed here.  These are the same people that I have grow up with the 90’s but yes you are correct with the rest of it

It’s a fact. It was a Toronto council mandate in the John Tory days.

Back in the early days.  Hasn’t been that way in YEARS and it was penetang not Toronto.  Nothing to do with Toronto so no, it isn’t a fact

u/Aggravating-Ad-4189 1d ago

Penetang for sure, but the city of Toronto and CAMH practiced Greyhound therapy. My point being those cities get off free without contributing to the infrastructure of care of the people. Not to mention that sending people away from their regular surroundings, friends, support groups and family must be devastating.

No they are not I work for CAMH and they have never sent anyone from Toronto to here. I also have grown up with the people who are now homeless they're from my same high school when Central was around.

Who hurt you?

1

u/Real_Illustrator1999 16h ago

Indeed who hurt you to make that stuff up?

I agree. I've been closer than I'd care to admit

Can't we just let them hangout in the fire houses or police stations?

I was actually just thinking, I know the Koslov mall isn't currently set up for showers and whatnot, but so many of those stores are empty. Maybe while real solutions are being figured out, a temporary shelter, at least to have a warm place to sleep, could be set up there. At least for the winter.

This is just a thought I pulled out of thin air with a sleepy brain though. Don't judge this as a fully formed idea...

Not a bad idea. Trailers can also be rented with showers. I think the problem is making sure there is security. Again, why not use the police for security.

I will apologize now if I am incorrect. If the transfers were not “directly” from CAMH. I should never have slandered an essential facility like that. Look it was all politics, I worked in and around the politics at the time. Tory was getting hard pressure from a number of groups for not doing enough and the growing numbers despite him spending an all time highest budget. There were very creative ways to “offer” people re-homing in other cities. The process was supposed to include a social worker on the other end and the services to support someone starting their life in a new city. The system failed poorly. Much like it has our immigrants finding themselves here from Syria and The Ukraine. It is much better now but was a disaster to begin with. So the process may have improved as you have pointed out. It was YEARS ago.

Happy Holidays. 🌲

Was in the ER for 36 hours recently waiting for treatment . Watching the understaffed ER in the triage room was certainly eye opening . They have enough on their plate to deal with but having to deal with the “ unhoused” addicts who were using the room as a sleeping area , while refusing treatment was frustrating to watch . They were eventually escorted out of the hospital back to the streets I’m guessing .

What’s frustrating is you using us in the healthcare industry as cannon fodder for your hatred for the poors.  Don’t use us as an excuse for your hate.  You don’t speak for us

How are you ending homelessness exactly? You magically curing mental illnesses?

Yes you are right. But if you don't have the alternatives in place yet advocating for closing encampments without the alternatives ready is ridiculous. Idk why homelessness will be solved and they will disappear if an encampments closed

So you actually think closing an encampment stops encampments? Hate to break it to you buddy. But they just start an encampment elsewhere in days.

Sure, housing-first is one of the few evidence-based methods for actually ending not only homelessness, but any of the problems associated with it, but don't kid yourself that the people who are okay with criminalizing encampment aren't the same people who are opposed to housing-first initiatives. I've seen people in this sub outright ask for the homeless population to die somewhere out of sight. It's disgusting. Literally the Nazi response.

I'm not extending an olive branch to scum-of-the-Earth.

Edit to add: oh no, did I offend scum-of-the-Earth? I'll have to cry myself to sleep in my circle of loving, supportive friends and family while I continue to live without a black, shrivelled heart.

I join you in solidarity. The privileged here can pound salt

At least there's been enough pushback in the subreddit that being a hateful turd isn't as commonplace any more.

2

u/Real_Illustrator1999 2d ago

Agree.  It takes all of ya to make sure someone like “Andycar” doesn’t have a place here with his hate

4

u/AndyCar1214 3d ago

I’d agree, but the devil is in the details for me.

u/Real_Illustrator1999 2d ago

Easy to cure.  It’s called ending capitalism with its greed

it’s a difficult problem to be solved.

The solution is just more welfare, nothing about it is complicated.

You know....if we weren't spending $2billion dollars to buy back guns from legally registered gun owners.....priorities

2

u/TheNihilistNarwhal 1d ago

Or if we weren't spending the provincial budget on idiotic things like removing already established bike lanes or building a tunnel under an already existing highway...

I'm not disagreeing with you btw, only pointing out that there is more fat to trim.

Agree fully!!!!!!! 👍🏼

Expand MAID

15

u/Moos_Mumsy 3d ago

Fuck off. The people living in encampments want to live. You think they would struggle so hard to live in those environments if they didn't?

5

u/Wizoerda 3d ago

No one wants MAID for homeless people. That’s a stupid conspiracy that some people believe is already happening.
