Human Fatality(ies) Man dies after pit bull attack; police investigate circumstances (2024/12/23, Nova Venécia - Brazil)
A man died after being attacked by a pit bull dog on Monday morning (23), in the Aeroporto neighborhood, in Nova Venécia, northwestern Espírito Santo. The victim's identity and age have not been released.
According to information from the Military Police (PM), the man had invaded the backyard of a residence when he was attacked by the family dog. In an attempt to escape the animal, he jumped over a wall and fell into the street, already seriously injured. The Fire Brigade was called, but found him dead on arrival.
The police also said that reports from anonymous residents pointed to another possible version of what happened. According to these reports, the victim had committed a theft in the neighborhood during the early hours of the morning and had been beaten by some people. While fleeing, the man invaded the backyard of the house, where he was attacked by the animal.
The dog's owner was taken to the 17th Regional Police Station in Nova Venécia to give explanations. The area was cordoned off by the police and forensics were called in to collect evidence at the scene.
The Fire Brigade pointed out that the team had been called to attend to an incident involving an animal attack, but the victim was already lifeless when they arrived.
The Civil Police said that the case was initially registered as attempted robbery with the death of the agent. The deputy on duty at the Central de Teleflagrante is leading the investigations, and the procedure to be adopted will be defined once the statements have been taken.
The victim's body was sent to the Regional Section of Forensic Medicine (SML) in Colatina, where it will undergo an autopsy before being released to relatives. Investigations are continuing to clarify the circumstances of what happened.

Human Fatality(ies) 15-month-old baby dies after being attacked by a family pit bull; She had been playing with her cousin inside her relatives’ home when the dog suddenly attacked, causing fatal wounds to her neck — Talca, Maule Region, Chile (Dec 21, 2024)
UPDATE DEC 23: Her name was Paris Antonella.
—
According to preliminary information, the attack occurred when the one-year-and-three-month-old girl was with her family visiting relatives in the Villa Francia sector, when the dog did not recognize the victim and attacked her, causing injuries that cost her life in the Regional Hospital of Talca.
According to initial reports, the victim was playing with her cousin when a kind of "struggle" occurred, so the dog attacked the girl, injuring her in the neck and chest area.
Due to the above, the Public Prosecutor's Office entrusted the investigative proceedings to the Homicide Brigade (BH) of the Investigative Police.
The acting prosecutor of Talca, Viviana Rojas , said that "unfortunately, at around 2:30 p.m., in Villa Francia, Talca, a 15-month-old infant died after being attacked by a pitbull that was inside the home."
The dog only injured the girl, because the mother immediately intervened, managed to get her out and take her to the Talca Hospital with the help of neighbors," added prosecutor Rojas.
The prosecutor reported that no one has been arrested for the incident, but that the BH will still investigate the incident and will investigate any violation of the Responsible Ownership Law.

Little interesting side story, maybe
I recently had a discussion that I think perhaps fits here, by all means , Mods, take it down if it doesn’t.
i cannot go into detail, but earlier in the week , helped take care of an individual who was headed to the OR for a washout of a dog bite. Couldn’t stop myself from asking what kind of dog it was. Apparently there was a fight brewing between an Aussie and a pit ( or “staffie ” as the wife referred to it🙄) I ignored her and the man explained the pit started the aggression but he grabbed the Pit in a body hug, laying on the ground and rolled it away from the other dog ( found that method interesting). The other dog wound up grabbing his arm and then immediately released when it realized that was not the intended target. the woman tried to interject that it was a big misunderstanding and it wasn’t either dogs fault. The man cut her off and said “yes it was, the pit was pissed the other dog went after a toy that it had earlier felt was not interesting and left it”
while in the OR, I struck a conversation with one of the nurses about how honestly lucky this guy was that the Aussie bit instead of the pit. The wounds would have been significantly worse.
this apparently opened a floodgate. The nurse had found a kindred soul and she started to tell me about her experiences with pits
the short of it “they are fucking crazy”
she has a sister who has been involved in dog rescue and has had a handful of pits- in basically a unicorn home. She herself has had two. One was old when they got him and was just an easy going dude- very much in his twilight years. The other- they got as a puppy. She proceeded to go thru all the efforts they made to make this dog work. It was a lot, and legitimately it sounded like she tried to do everything right. When she realized how unstable it was, she immediately rehomed her small dog. She hated to see it go, but she didn’t want to pawn off the pit on some one else. She went thru multiple trainers, made sure it was worked with constantly, set boundaries, basically she did everything humanly possible to keep that dog on the right track. And it worked…. For roughly 7 years.
the dog became increasingly violent and anxious. It began trying to tear thru its metal kennel- to the point of ripping apart its own face and grinding its teeth down. In her words “that dog was nuts, it was fucking crazy. And terrifying.” She spoke like she was trying to convince me to believe her. I did . “They say it’s all how u raise them. No way, we did everything right, never hurt that dog ever, crossed every T and dotted every I.”
‘‘I had to put it down”.
I said “good for you, we need more owners like you”.
it was one of the most refreshingly honest conversations I’ve had regarding this topic. She is your typical middle class, wife and kids, etc kind of person. I admit I was surprised by her candor and it was an unexpected response, usually there is someone flashing pics of their new pit puppy in a football jersey. All I can think of is “talk to me when they get to age 2… lets see if theyre still so perfect”
this conversation was followed up with another one ( another nurse) who had been bitten recently trying to pull her dogs away from the neighbors pit. That started a similar discussion. She mentioned that her aunt was a vet , and absolutely hated these “pit/ mixes”- commenting that unless the dog was a specific breed and pedigreed, basically all mixes were now pit mixes. Gone are the days of the oops litters of shepherds and labs- the great mutts who are normally mentally conjured up when people head to a shelter.
its a mild story, but I thought it was encouraging. Both of these women could have easily fallen into the pitmommy category, and instead showed their sanity and common sense. With all the audacity and obnoxiousness of that particular group , I thought it was a nice change to have something encouraging to report.

Attack on Animal(s) - Pets Self-victimisation over owning a ‘reactive’ dog, leads to bite
IG tags removed from video for moderators don’t remove
This really pissed me off, firstly where is the ‘training’?
1) Taking your shitbull to a park to watch other dogs play while squirming with bloodlust doesn’t count as training.
2) Taking your known dog aggressive (which for pits inevitably spills to whatever else) without a muzzle to a dog park
3) Acting like a victim
Sent them a message:
Regarding your video of your ‘reactive’ dog, still taking outside without a muzzle and that leading to a bite -
Stop being selfish and think about how this situation could end for another dog, and just as likely, a child. Stop filming your dog outside unmuzzled with sad music about how hard it is - some parent could end up in a much harder situation than you because of your negligence. Please do the right thing and keep your community safe.
I doubt it’ll get through, and they appear to own 4 pits so I honestly don’t see this person making it through without at least a few pet mortalities on their hands. What joy these creatures bring.

Attack on Animal(s) - Pets Maltese mauled by Pitbull, resuscitated by Police - Novara, Italy - 25 December 2024
He owes his life to two patrols of the Novara Police Headquarters Flying Squad. A small dog, bitten by a pitbull, was saved by the State Police who intervened in the Sant’Agabio district of Novara to quell a fight.
It happened on Christmas Eve, but it was only reported today, Friday 27 December. The fight broke out in via Morazzone. A large number of people were involved who, shouting, began to threaten each other and push each other on the street. They were presumably under the influence of alcohol.
While they were busy restoring calm, the officers were called to the nearby via Italo Calvari where a pitbull was holding a Maltese dog between its teeth. To free the animal, it was also necessary to use pepper spray and one policeman was injured in the hand. The Maltese was unconscious and only began to recover thanks to the cardiac massage that was performed on him by the police.

"We still see people walking around with these dogs without muzzles. It appears that no one is checking that the dogs are registered until an attack has happened… Who is checking if owners move or if the dogs are passed around to different owners? We don’t think the laws are being enforced.”

The sickening XL Bully bloodbath that proves ban has failed… as fatal dog attacks RISE in 2024 despite crackdown
Traumatised victims tell The Sun they feared they were 'going to die' during gruesome attacks.
IT was a scene to send shivers down the spine of any parent.
Wrestling with the jaws of a rampaging XL Bully, a mother desperately battled to free her eight-month-old baby girl as the hound "picked her up like a rag doll and shook her".
The terrifying incident, which saw the tot airlifted to hospital in Kent earlier this month, came just weeks after 10-year-old Savannah Benthamwas savaged to death by a dog of the same breed in her family's caravan in Malton, North Yorkshire.
These little girls are two of the latest dog attack victims of 2024 - with the death toll now even higher than 2023, despite the wide-reaching XL Bully ban rolled out at the start of the year.
On February 1, it became illegal to own an American Bully XL dog in England and Wales without a certificate of exemption. They must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public places and it's illegal to breed or sell them.
The ban was brought in after a number of high-profile cases in which people were killed by the breed - including that of Ian Price, who died trying to protect his elderly mother from two crazed XLs who had escaped from a neighbour's window in Staffordshire.
However, despite the crackdown, a total of 10 people have been killed by out-of-control dogs since February in horrific and bloody attacks across the UK - five of those by XL Bullies.
The tally is an unexpected and worrying rise from 2023, which saw nine people lose their lives from dog attacks, with three of them concerning the controversial breed.
Today, grieving families, experts and XL Bully attack victims tell The Sun that the ban has been an absolute failure and urge the Government to do more to stop the devastating attacks.
Much-loved grandma Esther Martin, 68, was killed in a savage attack by two XL Bullies in front of her traumatised grandson in Jaywick, Essex on February 9 - just days after the ban was rolled out.
Her grandson's father - wannabe rapper Ashley Warren, who owned the two dogs named Beauty and Bear and their six puppies - was arrested on suspicion of dangerous dog offences and is awaiting trial.
Esther's daughters, Sonia Martin and Kelly Fretwell, who cannot talk about their mum’s case until the court case is concluded, say they do not think the XL Bully ban has worked.
“Sadly we don’t think anything has changed since our mum’s death," they tell The Sun.
"We have heard of attacks by XL Bullies on people and other dogs regularly.
"Not all attacks get reported in the media, we just see people posting about them in Facebook groups and community groups.
"No single agency seems to be collecting the statistics on attacks. We’ve reached out to Defra and the police and no one seems to have any up to date figures nor total figures for attacks since the law was implemented.
"We still see people walking around with these dogs without muzzles. It appears that no one is checking that the dogs are registered until an attack has happened - by then it’s too late.
"Who is checking if owners move or if the dogs are passed around to different owners? We don’t think the laws are being enforced.
"To be honest, we think a different solution is needed, maybe a training programme and behaviour checks on these dogs, so that the law is proactive in identifying dogs that are a danger to humans.”
Defra said it did not keep statistics on dog attacks as they were kept by local agencies such as the police and the NHS.
Worrying rise
The Sun sent Freedom of Information requests to 16 of the biggest police forces in England and Wales to ask for statistics on reports of dog attacks in 2024 compared to 2023.
So far, only West Yorkshire Police has responded with figures.
They recorded 987 reports of out-of-control dogs injuring people from January to October 2024, compared to 949 from the same period last year.
They did not have available stats for the types of dogs involved in each attack.
Other police forces said it was either too time-consuming to collate and provide the figures, or they planned to release them at a later date.
Meanwhile, victims who have survived vicious attacks by the dogs also don't believe anything has changed since former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the ban last September.
One teenager mauled by a 50kg XL Bully in a vicious attack where she believed she was going to die tells The Sun she doesn't support the ban.
Gilana Milner, 19, was working in an animal rescue centre when an XL Bully named Hugo lunged at her while she was changing his water bowl.
The huge dog dragged her to the floor, mauling her chest and leg, and staff had to fight him off when he refused to unclamp his jaws.
Gilana Milner, Dog Attack Survivor
Terrified Gilana, who was just 18 at the time of the incident, thought she was going to die in the attack back in May.
Gilana, a day care worker, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, said: "They go for the big arteries in your legs.
"When they've got you down they go for your neck.
"I just kept thinking about my mum. I knew I was going to die and I didn't want to."
Despite being left with scarring, nerve damage and needing therapy to overcome the trauma, Gilana does not agree with the ban on the breed.
Gilana said: "I'm doing OK physically, mentally it's still distressing and I'm currently having therapy.
"But I don't agree with the ban, it's not fair to put the dogs to sleep.
"It's more on the owners, there should be more in place.
"If you don't know the dog, you could underestimate how powerful they are.
"People see a big cuddly dog and don't realise that it could end very differently."
'Owners to blame'
Another victim, Sophie Dollimore, 22, who was also attacked by what she believes was a banned XL Bully, is calling for harsher punishments for the owners of dangerous dogs.
Sophie was walking her dog - a Staffy named Brandy - at around 9.40pm on July 3 in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, when an out-of-control dog bit her on the leg.
Sophie, who is now too scared to leave her home because of the attack, told The Sun: "I thought I wasn't scared of dogs, but I am now.
"It's not the dog's fault at all, they're just doing what they're trained to do.
"I blame the owners, it's bad training.
"I don't agree with the ban but think owners should be screened before being able to own an XL Bully.
"You need to be physically strong enough to handle them.
"The power behind the dog was shocking, I didn't expect to be knocked to the ground like that.
"I'm too scared to leave the house now, I'm paranoid that I'll get bitten again.
"The ban doesn't work at all because people are still getting hurt.
"There is no enforcement of the ban, there's not point having it because no one listens and people still are being attacked."
In relation to Sophie's case, Hertfordshire Police said: "A 53-year-old man from Hatfield was arrested in August on suspicion of being the owner/person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury.
"He was questioned and released on police bail while enquiries continue."
'Worst offender' dogs
James McNally, known as the "dog bite lawyer", works to obtain compensation for victims of dog attacks and says he has seen no reduction in the number of cases since the ban came into place.
James, who gave evidence to the Defra committee on the XL Bully ban last November, told The Sun: "It's been pretty much exactly the same [as last year] - we haven't seen any decrease in dog attacks since the ban and we didn't expect to.
"Interestingly we didn't have a single inquiry regarding an XL Bully attack in 2023.
"The 'worst offender' dogs are the same as they have always been. German Shepherds, Staffies, those kind of dogs - they have always been the top of the list of dogs causing the most bites and injuries. That has not changed.
"Even when the XL Bully 'scare' was at its worst, it was still the other dogs responsible for the most attacks.
"All dogs can bite. You get the wrong dog on the wrong day, it will bite you. That might be because the dog is aggressive, or ill, or because the dog is reacting to a situation and the person hasn't read the warning signs.
"The problem is the bigger the dog, the more severe that bite is."
James says the Government's XL Bully ban was a "cheap and easy fix" which has done nothing to reduce the overall number of people being attacked by dogs.
He says deliver drivers and joggers are the most likely to be victim of a dog attack - and the four most common dogs his company deals with claims against are German Shepherds, Border Collies, Staffordshire Bull terriers and Rottweilers.
"We probably have about 400 live cases and of those only one XL Bully. When we've counted up before it's been something like 73 different breeds and 82 cross breeds," he said.
"So it's pretty much all dogs, that's the thing and that's when why the XL Bully ban came in no one really explored what the issue was behind the spike in dog attack fatalities.
"There were no studies into why this had happened.... it was a very simple fix for the Government at the time because all they had to do was add that name to the banned list and they didn't really have to do much else.
James McNally, Dog Bite Lawyer
"It completely ignored the fact that we are seeing a rise in dog attacks generally.
"It was an easy and cheap fix which didn't address the problems - which is often dog owners.
"Many just don't realise that their dog could bite, so I think there is a generally lack of awareness from an awful lot of dog owners as to what they should be doing.
"They may well see themselves as the most responsible dog owner in the world, but if you're walking the dog with the view it's never going to hurt anyone then you are mistaken.
"The fact we're still seeing fatalities and attacks shows it hasn't really solved the issue, it was just a quick fix by a government which wanted to score some brownie points."
Simple steps
James believes that dog owners can take simple steps to lessen the risks posed by their pets, but many don't because they think their dog would never bite.
"Our relationship with dogs is that they are seen as family members and that's why people are so trusting and they leave children with dogs and put them in situations they shouldn't be in because of that," he said.
"They think their dog will never hurt anyone. Even as little as putting a letter box cage on their door so the dog can't bite anyone making a delivery or making sure their dog is secure when the Amazon guy is coming - those are things that could massively reduce injuries.
"We've also seen an increase in people being attacked in public places and I think that it's people walking their dogs while looking at mobile phones.
"They are completely distracted and aren't keeping an eye on their dogs."

Pits Ruining Neighborhoods Can't take my baby on walks anymore because of neighbor's pitbull
We moved into this neighborhood this year, excited for a fresh start. For a while, it was great. Our 1 year old and I would go on daily walks with the stroller to enjoy the fresh air, the nearby pond, and let him giggle at the ducks.
Then, last month, another family moved into a house on our regular walk circuit. They brought with them a young adult (<5 yr) unfixed male pitbull.
The first thing we noticed was the stench of urine. The smell is terrible even from the sidewalk. Walking past their house is unbearable.
But the barking and lounging is what really terrified me. When we walked by, if the pit was locked out in the front yard (which is often) it would throw itself against their flimsy four-foot wooden fence, snarling and barking like it wants to rip us apart. From the stroller our baby would raise his arms trying to cling to me and screaming in fear, while I tried to hurry past without completely panicking.
I can’t stop myself from imagining the worst. What if the dog jumps the fence one day? It’s not nearly tall enough to keep a dog like that contained. I’ve read too many stories about attacks in this sub to just dismiss the thought as irrational.I know how it ends.
Because of all this, I don’t feel safe taking my son on walks anymore. Before we leave I have to see if the dog is outside before. Even then, I rush past their house, praying the pitbull won't push open an unlocked door and run outside or something like that. At times it has literally STARED at us through the house's window the whole time we walk past their property, barking silently (can't hear it from behind the glass), EVEN IF WE'RE ACROSS THE STREET.
All this to say I miss when I could simply go on a stroll around the block without wondering if me or the baby will be killed by the pitbull. You don't know what you have till you lose it I guess.

Our shelters are crazy too.
Of course, we have the usual pits, and their stories of what sweet calm babies they are. If you adopt them, this time it will definitely work. They just need a home without other dogs. Or cats. Or children. Actually, just give the dog your keys and run. But I'm going against the sub here. I'm posting non pits /s. Here are 1, 2, 3-labrador retrievers. The first two are from the rescues, the third is from a breed site. 4 and 5 are border collies. One from a shelter, one from a breeder. And then we finish with three cattle dogs. At most shelters I looked at, pits go for $25, and "other breeds" go for $225. It is madness. How do their fingers not fall off typing these lies?

Apartment neighbors have a pit...safety tips?
So my obnoxious neighbors have adopted a pitbull.
We live in an apartment building but unfortunately there are no regulations against pitbull ownership and they are not a banned breed here.
I am concerned about coming in close contact with the animal in the shared hallway or when entering/leaving the building.
People who have found themselves in similar situations, which steps did you take to stay safe?

NANNY DOG: A Myth Invented in 1971 “Nanny dogs”
I took an edible and started thinking too hard about how dumb someone has to be to believe that anyone would breed a dog for the express purpose of…babysitting children. Like that doesn’t stand up to literally two seconds of scrutiny. You think people left their children…their babies…with dogs??? They don’t have posable thumbs; how, pray tell, are they supposed to care for an infant????
Like forget the fact that pit bulls are the dogs least suitable for child rearing…how is any dog qualified to babysit a human child? Can it warm up a bottle? Can it work the parental controls on an iPad?? Can it bake a batch of dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets?!? It’s a fucking DOG!!
The “nanny dog” myth is such a fascinating and terrifying example of how all you really have to do to get people to believe utter nonsense is say it confidently as if it’s a matter of settled fact and nobody will bother to hold your statement up against reality to see if it makes even the slightest bit of sense, as long as it affirms their worldview. Shit’s wild y’all.

Attack on Animal(s) - Pets Size is not an indication of danger [2024.12.27] NSW, Aus
My partner, dog (border collie/maremma mix), and I were travelling home and stopped at a dog beach for some much needed exercise and caffeine. There weren't many folks on the beach, some surfers, some young families, and a few small dogs in the distance.
There were four dogs, all seeming to belong to the same couple and - from a distance - fat little frenchies. Unfortunately, I was wrong, and they turned out to be two frenchies and two English staffies, with no leads in sight. We called our dog over to keep some distance, but all four of the bullies ran over and with zero warning the two staffies went straight for my boys neck. They staffies couldn't have been more than a year old and 15kg, as compared to my 35kg long boy, but there was no hesitation. The owners made no attempt to intervene, and it was over quickly so I didn't have to intervene.
My dog is unharmed and relatively unphased by the incident, but it just reminded me of the fact that all blood sport breeds are dangerous regardless of their size.

Life-Altering Injuries, Coma, Hospitalization Former MP and his Dog Attacked by a Pitbull: 'We are alive by a miracle' - Conegliano, Italy - December 2024
CONEGLIANO (TREVISO) - "We are alive by a miracle, my dog and I, attacked by a pitbull." Former MP Franco Rocchetta, 78 next April, founder and ideologist of the Liga Veneta, will have to rest completely for a month. "I can't even drive, to take a walk I have to use crothoes," he says, pointing out the Venetian spelling of crutches. In a five-page report, after having remained all night in the hospital in Conegliano between visits, X-rays and CT scans, the doctors found, in addition to abrasions and bruises, a head injury, a hip fracture, a compound fracture of the greater trochanter, and a shoulder injury. But things could have been much worse if the pitbull that threw him to the ground, attacking him from behind, had managed to bite him. It had tried to bite his neck, but its teeth were sunk into the padded collar of the jacket worn by Rocchetta. Who also lost his glasses. "The pitbull attacked me from behind and threw me face down on the ground, and my lenses were gone." The photo with the bleeding eyebrow is emblematic. "Yes, I will sue the pitbull's owner. But I also want to write a letter to the authorities, from the president of the Region Luca Zaia to the mayor of Conegliano and to the entire ANCI because it is not possible that certain dangerous dogs roam around without a muzzle."

Personal Story I hate pit bulls
I'm here to vent a little.
I've always hated these dogs. Before, I hated them because they’re ugly. But now that I know how they behave, I hate them even more. A pit bull, supposedly treated as a pet and cared for since it was a puppy, killed my best canine friend.
The pit bull belongs to my brother-in-law, but it’s a beast. It has a very sad life, and I usted to feel sorry for it. It's tied up all day long, has a skin infection, and sometimes they don’t even feed it. My brother-in-law bought it because, apparently, "it was cheap and a purebred," but he didn’t even have the minimum space to keep it. And of course, he mutilated its ears and tail. It’s broken free from its chain several times, and the only thing it does is attack other dogs. It already killed his sister’s dog and now mine, as well as several cats.
Since I joined this subreddit, I’ve been worried because they have a 3-year-old child, and his wife is pregnant. Even though it’s tied up, they let the child interact with it. Honestly, I hate that damn dog, and now my only concern is the safety of these children.

Shelter Skelter Pit was “rescued”, returned to shelter because it was so unmanageable even a professional trainer deemed it “exceptionally extreme”, Twitter lunatic reattempts to have the “super cute” monster re-homed
Who else wants to know exactly why it was returned to the shelter less than a week after being fostered? I sure as hell do

Attacks Caught on Camera Loose pit bulls attack and nearly kill tied-up chihuahua, their owner being charged for violating the Dangerous Dog Ordinance; The attack comes less than two years after Independence removed its pit bull ban — Independence, Missouri, USA (Dec 20, 2024)
YOUTUBE: Independence dog owner charged after attack on chihuahua caught on camera
Info the video has that the article does not: * The chihuahua’s owner wants the pit bull ban back in place. * Neighbours said this was not an isolated incident and that the dogs escape “more than they should.”

In an incident caught on camera, two pit bulls attacked and nearly killed a chihuahua.
Those two dogs are still at home as fears grow about safety in the neighborhood.
“It was the most horrific thing I ever experienced in my life… I was just thinking about what the kids are going to think,” David West said.
The house where the attack happened is close to a bus stop, and the video you have to see has the city of Independence responding about the concerns. FOX4 has cut the most graphic parts of that video out.
“I was in disbelief… everything was slow motion and blurry and just horrific, the sounds are just horrible,” West said.
West and his dog were outside as he was setting up some firewood last Friday. His little chihuahua was tied up when two loose pit bulls went in for the kill.
The video that is just so heartbreaking to watch captures the moments the five-pound dog had his neck in the jaws of not one, but two pit bulls. West did all he could to save the dog before he fell – and all he had left to do was cry out for someone to call 911.
“I was thinking how I’m going to tell my children what I was going to do. Was I going to bury him?” he said.
The attack lasted nearly three minutes before the dog lost consciousness.
Working for You, FOX4 went to home where the pit bulls reside. The owners opened an upstairs window simply to say they didn’t know if it was their dogs or not. There were dogs barking just on the other side of the door.
This attack happened less than two years after Independence removed its pit bull ban from the books following a year’s long lawsuit over an attack that left a man permanently disfigured.
A city spokesperson said in a statement:
“The City of Independence has filed charges against the dog owner for violating our Dangerous Dog Ordinance for an incident that happened on December 20th. The animals in question are currently on home confinement. Because there is a court date set (for January), I can’t comment further about this specific case.”
Now for neighbors we spoke with. Their concern is that there is a bus stop nearby and worry that next time this could be someone’s child.

Independence votes to end ban on pit bulls (2023)
The City of Independence votes to end its ban on pit bulls.
The Independence City Council voted 5-2 Monday night to repeal the ban after thousands of people signed a petition against it. The vote was followed by an applause.
The new ordinance will go into effect on August 4, 2023.
A majority of speakers were in favor of lifting that ban, many of them representing outside organizations who say breed specific laws don’t make communities safer and end up putting a burden on animal shelters.
That argument stems from the fact once pit bulls are seized at no-kill shelters they can’t be euthanized, but they also can’t be adopted either and end up living their lives in cages.
Independence has had its ban since 2006. More than 4,400 people petitioned the city that year to ban pit bulls after Alan Hill was viciously attacked by three pit bulls while he mowed a lawn on a vacant lot he owned.
“I don’t want anyone to ever go through what I went through. If you’ve seen the pictures of what I looked like laying in that hospital, to this day anyone medically, they don’t how I made it,” Hill said.
