Why do so many of these sites always have power on?
Is it just local government not getting the turn off orders?

Not sure if it’s true but I heard once it’s to keep people from stealing the copper wiring?

I’ve generally heard it’s cheaper for the power companies to leave it on then shut it off

It’s at least partially to keep the HVAC running.
It’s a lot easier to sell/reuse the building later if it isn’t moldy.

How does this even happen?

When some people in an organization do bad things, we punish all of the people who didn't. I think that's part of the draw for them.

Also with the economy in a gentle, protracted collapse, folks just can't afford private school tuition anymore.

Not loving the old chemistry equipment lying around. That stuff should be cleaned up, if nothing else.

Sad waste of capital and resources when others need so much !

I know. Most schools in my area can't afford air conditioning, much less chemistry equipment, chemicals for chemistry classes, balls, books, rock collections, tvs, ect. The gym roof leaks so bad the kids lost the gym. Schools in my area would be able to actually teach with this stuff that was abandoned. A very sad waste

That's a terrible way to look at it. Schools are a service. They provide education and training that leads to a productive population. That school probably operated 15-20 years, graduating thousands of kids. The lifetime extra earnings of those children will contribute to the economy and taxes more than pays for itself. People bemoan how expensive education is and what a burden it is for those without kids, but we all benefit from an educated, productive population. It's not a cost but an investment.

I took school so seriously when I went but to see it abandoned makes you realize it was just a building with people.

2010 closed catholic school WI. Lack of enrollment for two catholic schools to merge into one at a different site. Hope was to rent out the school, but looks as if no one wanted to rent out the space. Not sure if it’s still there.

There’s so much shit in schools. It’s astonishing. Al least in my district, schools can’t throw out anything payed for by the county. In Leeds to be inventoried then sent bay to a distribution center. Which could take months to years. We still have working gas ovens.

But I thought sports and trophies were really important. That's why athletes get paid more than scientists and people of substance. How could they leave them behind?

It's so hard to see this much waste! I know it's an unspoken rule in urban exploring that you never take anything you find, but why if it has been abandoned to rot?

If we change it from a 5-day school week to a 4-day school week I'm sure they could take care of it then fix it but no closing it is a lot easier things need to evolve and change we need to put mental health first before trying the same thing to expecting a different result.

Mary Queen of Saints Catholic Academy in Milwaukee closed in 2024. Many Catholic schools experienced declining enrollment in the 1990s, which led to some schools permanently closing. In these cases, the school administration, parents, students, and community members often protested the closure, but were unsuccessful.
