Sonic fans can't tell the difference between 'America' and 'The World'
According to Box Office Mojo. In the US Domestic Market "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" did beat Mufasa for the #1
However when it comes to the worldwide international market. Mufasa took the #1 slot. So Disney is not wrong here.
Yet the post is getting ratioed with replies filled with Sonic fans trying to claim that Disney's post is wrong cause Defaultism. Even trying to place a Community Note on the post.
The only person I know who gets like this is a massive marvel fan. He went to see end game 8 times in the cinema and tried to convince his friends to do the same.
um actually a quick google search shows that the number 1 movie in Japan this week is はたらく細胞 (with Moana 2 at number 2 and Mufasa at 3). clearly this is the world ranking. the Sonic movie hasn't even been released yet.
This seems to go hand in hand with the "World Series", which is an annual baseball championship solely for teams in the USA and Canada.
Do people in the USA generally think of (or refer to) north America as "the world"? Or is it, perhaps, shorthand for "the English-speaking world" or the Anglosphere?
Do they generally think of other places as "other worlds" or perhaps "the greater world" or "the world at large"? Does this happen in other relatively large countries, e.g. in China?
What I find more hilarious is the incorrect use of the quotation marks by Walt Disney Studios which makes it sound like they're shitting on their own movie
I'm not sure where the $1m has come from because as far as I can find Paramount haven't released any figures for international markets yet. It's already out in the UK but it's not included in the BFI figures for last weekend and the official release date is listed as 27th December, presumably so that all the international figures can be released together.
I mean in Brazil today was the first day u could watch it and if I remember correctly in Russia it's only next week still so likely they didn't account for international sales as cinemas where still buying the license to show the movie
I understand where you are coming from.
But the thing is, Mufasa is saying they're the best movie in the World when Sonic 3 isn't even released most places internationally. The point of all this is to show that Sonic is a better movie, it doesn't actually mean that they don't know that other places exist.
Mb if i made it a Mufonic3 war but I think the context is different.
Sonic 3 hasn’t even released in most other countries (it hasn’t in turkey,Malaysia,Indonesia ,Italy,Argentinia,south korea etc.) is it really a fair fight? accidental defaultism by OP?
It's not a fair fight as Paramount haven't reported any figures from outside the US yet, including the countries where it has been released, but none of the "number 1 in US" posts I've seen have acknowledged that and I doubt many of them are aware of it (I only found out 5 minutes ago when I looked at the UK box office figures and it wasn't even in the top 10, which seemed highly unlikely) so I think it still counts.
True, but the stats aren't terribly important to me. Kind of taken me aback how serious people have taken this though - 35 downvotes because I said I preferred Sonic? People really need to get a life.
Not being able to do 1st grade math is an American W in your eyes? You are ready to go to WAR over your false belief that $63 million is a bigger number than $122 million. And you consider it a win? Wow. Some adults are genuinely dumber than kindergartners, you first of all.
Hollywood movies should only matter to America anyway. Just my opinion. I rarely care about non American movies besides Godzilla and the Shaun of the Dead trilogy.

Disney put out a post claiming that "Mufasa The Lion King" is the Number 1 movie in the world.
Fans of "Sonic the Hedgehog" are trying to 'correct' Disney by showing that Sonic 3 is the #1 movie in America.
Box office data shows that Sonic is ahead in the US Market. But worldwide Mufasa has more ticket sales.
