Reddit 2024 Recapped (from an American perspective)

A 2024 recap that has been posted on an international subreddit, lists events half of which non-American audience very likely won't be familiar with. The title is ambiguous regarding the country, despite the post clearly being America-centric.

We had climate disasters in Spain and Southern Brazil, martial law and political chaos in South Korea and innocents being killed in Palestine. But apparently someone thought it was more important to put a baseball player in the 2024 recap that no one outside the US knows about.

Also that thing falling on a cargo ship. Clearly more important than the floods and the end of Bashar Al-Assad dictatorship.

19

u/minibois Netherlands 6d ago

the end of Bashar Al-Assad dictatorship.

I assumed picture nr. 2 (which features a Syrian flag) was meant to represent that.

16

u/ExoticPuppet Brazil 6d ago

Might be, but I think there are plenty of images that hold more weight and that represents better. My results of "End of Syria dictatorship":

3

u/KkGUnknown 6d ago

Both Syria and Gaza are in those photos…

u/wish_me_w-hell 6d ago

Disaster in Serbia in which 15 people died and 2 are gravely injured when train station canopy collapsed, which in turn triggered state wide protests that are lasting for 1-1.5 months now. I guess that just a chill guy takes precedent.

Political caos in Germany as well, on the same day as the results of the US presidential election came out

We had the Thessaloniki metro being built after 50 years since the first ideas and 30 since the first acts

Wtf is that cartoon dog? I’ve seen it a few times. What is it supposed to mean?

61

u/Eye_The_Ruby Poland 6d ago

"Just a chill guy", according to its creator. Pretty sure that's all there is to it

23

u/sprauncey_dildoes England 6d ago

Thanks. Now I know what to look for on knowyourmeme.com. Although there doesn’t seem to be much more to it than that.

13

u/Forward-Highway-2679 6d ago

Not even the best meme from this year

No mention of Raygun?

57

u/TrostnikRoseau 6d ago

Ah, common mistake; she’s not American. Hope that helps!

29

u/MH2_DavSka Australia 6d ago

Fortunately not

34

u/Red_Cathy United Kingdom 6d ago

Probably too expensive, the amount of money she demands for you to make fun of her.

3

u/loralailoralai 5d ago

😂🤣😂🤣😂

If only she’d approached it the right way, she could have made money off it.

10

u/_Penulis_ Australia 6d ago

Still in Australian news as the person everybody loves to hate. Will easily survive as a newsworthy here into 2025 and beyond.

8

u/Red_Cathy United Kingdom 5d ago

She will survive as a slang term for someone who appears to try hard but fails miserably.

I made a cake yesterday it didn't rise, my wife said "Jeeez, you Raygunned that mate"

1

u/MistaRekt Australia 4d ago

Oh that is brutal... I like it...

43

u/MineAntoine 6d ago

what are half of these things

25

u/ogloba 6d ago

Half? You're being kind.

8

u/Fromtheboulder 6d ago

my hypothesis is that those are screenshots, possibly from a compilation of photos made by a single, or a group, of people.

6

u/MineAntoine 6d ago

mmm intelligent

u/loralailoralai 5d ago

God I thought it was just me being all old and stuff

2

u/outwest88 American Citizen 4d ago

Yeah I’m from the US and I didn’t know 9 of these pictures. I’m mostly just confused.

2

u/ViolettaHunter 4d ago

Half? It's like 90% for me. 🤣

41

u/korbatchev Canada 6d ago

Who are those 3 guys at a talk show ? Did they do something important enough for all the world to know about them?

16

u/asmeile 6d ago

They did some family tiktoks and they seem pretty genuine, which is obviously nonsense being as they are social media stars, but as far as that goes I mean, and that little fat kid is hilarious when he puts on a flirty face

1

u/Neg_Crepe Canada 4d ago

Im Canadian and I know them

Boom.

30

u/asmeile 6d ago

I like how their picture to show the Israel Hamas war is just more Americans

16

u/justastuma Germany 6d ago

Right? Who cares about the people who lost their lives, their loved ones and their homes? The most important thing is how it makes Americans feel!

20

u/DrMaxMonkey 6d ago

Hey Charlie XCX is British thank you

31

u/Mttsen Poland 6d ago

Tom Brady? Isn't that guy from that one South Park episode, where everyone wanted to have his turd?

14

u/Valuable_Barber6086 6d ago

The only thing I know about him is about his relationship with Gisele Bündchen

4

u/Eye_The_Ruby Poland 6d ago

I really gotta return to watching that show XD

3

u/Mttsen Poland 6d ago

Yeah. Some of the more recent seasons are hilariously funny. That Tom Brady one in particular as well (I think it was around 23rd season). Lots of hilarious references to David Lynch's Dune adaptation as well.

1

u/eirebrit 4d ago

They have come for the spice.

2

u/Mttsen Poland 4d ago

THE spice... MELANGEEEE

35

u/PunishedVenomMarmite 6d ago

Idek who Tom Brady is ngl

6

u/kroketspeciaal Netherlands 6d ago

I have no clue who or what Tom Brady is (and Ifeel no need to learn), but he probably deserved to get roasted.

3

u/pajamakitten 6d ago

If it was not for Family Guy, The Simpsons and South Park, neither would I. He is a quarterback and a contender for the GOAT in American Football.

5

u/PunishedVenomMarmite 6d ago

That makes sense. I've heard the name before but it's just filed away in the "obscure celebrities who probably did something in America between 1900 and 20XX" corner of my brain. It's a big corner.

25

u/Risc_Terilia 6d ago

Scrolled through this thinking "Why is this all American shit" before realising what sub it was posted on...

9

u/cosmicr Australia 5d ago

Not just an American perspective, a young American too. Most people couldn't give a shit about memes or deadpool etc.

0

u/MistaRekt Australia 4d ago

I give a shit about Deadpool. Definitely not a young whipper-snapper...

8

u/Wonderful_Escape-190 India 6d ago

Where is that turkish shooter guy?

2

u/Eye_The_Ruby Poland 6d ago

Are you talking about the 4th image in my post?

12

u/Burakenn 5d ago

🤣🤣🤣. No. He's talking about Yusuf Dikeç

2

u/Eye_The_Ruby Poland 5d ago

Oh lmao, him

20

u/LUFCinTO 6d ago

No clue who or what any of the “sports” photos are

11

u/SinisterCheese 6d ago

Tbh... If they were sport photos from my country... I still wouldn't know who the fuck they were - as I really don't give a fuck about sports.

1

u/pajamakitten 6d ago

Superb Owl, NBA playoff finals (I think) and a very expensive baseball player.

12

u/Trade_Marketing Brazil 6d ago

I don't recognize more than half of the images...

2

u/Ning_Yu 6d ago

same here

22

u/Magister_Hego_Damask 6d ago

Multiple ones about sport, on an olympic year, and not a single one about it...

14

u/Pretend_Package8939 6d ago

The eighth pic is the Olympic Rings

6

u/Magister_Hego_Damask 6d ago

I missed it on my first viewing, my bad.

2

u/justastuma Germany 6d ago

Yes, it’s the only sports related one I recognized. I guess the one with the trophy is the superb owl (right?) but I have no idea who any of the sportspeople in any of the pictures are.

5

u/pajamakitten 6d ago

And acting as if something involving a baseball player is world news. It would be like me posting a picture of Dominic Solanke just because he is my club's highest selling player.

2

u/Magister_Hego_Damask 6d ago

You mean Thibaut Pinot getting on the podium of an amateur trail after his cycling retirement was not internationnal news?

4

u/KkGUnknown 6d ago

Half these comments are talking about an event that is literally in the post 🤣

10

u/pattyboiIII United Kingdom 6d ago

Who's Tom Brady?

1

u/MistaRekt Australia 4d ago

He is a movie character from "80 for Brady" about a bunch of octogenarians that want to see him play sports.

It has Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Sally Field in it.

It looks quite good.

5

u/pattyboiIII United Kingdom 4d ago

Im even more confused. I also have never heard of those people before. Are they internationally famous or just minor American celebrities

1

u/MistaRekt Australia 4d ago

They are literally 80 somethings. Real big celebrities in their prime.

Jane Fonda is famous for the 80s exercise fad. Workout by Fonda was HUGE. Fit woman in Lycra with 80s hair... Also Barbarella in 67.

Sally Field, famous actress, also 60s onwards.

Lily Tomlin us a very funny actress.

Tom Brady was made up for the movie.

Also Google.

PS: I am not American so I have no idea about minor American things like Tom Brady... The made up character.

5

u/CracyQ Ukraine 5d ago

This year, North Korea joined the war in Ukraine on the side of Russia. But this is probably not as important as some athletes.

4

u/Angelix Malaysia 6d ago

Who are the three kids with Kimmel? Why are they important?

1

u/Neg_Crepe Canada 4d ago

Big online presence

5

u/SteampunkBorg 5d ago

The few events I recognize from the pictures are only from the last few months, too. Except the Paris Olympics I think (not very interested in sports, even big events, so I'm not sure)

6

u/humanbehindkeyboard 6d ago

I’m american and don’t get half of these references

3

u/Xe4ro Germany 5d ago

Not much I recognise in there. :D

4

u/Christian_teen12 Ghana 6d ago

Yeah it seems more American centric

1

u/stamsiteminecraftpro Sweden 5d ago

Anyone else remember english or spanish final euros match?

u/CanineAtNight 4d ago

Apparently no one in ameeica care about hurricane milton so hows the entertainment industry doing to you america?

1

u/Mc_and_SP 4d ago

I love how they included Deadpool and Wolverine, despite both characters being Canadian

1

u/Euphoric-Bison-3765 4d ago

I propose: Polish local elections, Red is bad, ...

1

u/Scarviola 3d ago

Of course the finale of Murder Drones isn’t on there, it’s from an Australian animation studio, even though some members and the director of the show were American.

1

u/ulasmulas42 Türkiye 6d ago

Well at least they put olympics there.

1

u/Ill-Conclusion6571 6d ago

Charli XCX is a singer from England.

-1

u/Old-Artist-5369 6d ago

Literally says “from an American perspective”.

That’s not defaultism. Defaultism would be the same recap without acknowledging it’s only from an american perspective.

10

u/Massive_pineapple69 5d ago

I think OP put that in the title when he posted it to this sub

2

u/Old-Artist-5369 5d ago

lol yes that makes more sense, thanks

No. We know some of them, but the majority of these pictures are of obscure, local events. Just not important enough for the world at large to know about or be interested in.

6

u/BeliWS World 6d ago

Shooting of a random American CEO is everything but relevant

3

u/Informal_Big_7667 Malaysia 6d ago edited 6d ago

You don't NEED to know every localised event in other countries, any major events that international people like you and me recognise is enough (e.g. Assad dynasty finally ended or South Korean short-lived Martial law). That 2024 recap is in the international subreddit for Christ sake! I don't even know what 'The Roast of Tom Brady' is or why people even care about it? If something comes from the US like the election or UHC CEO getting whacked is acceptable since international news won't stop talking about it.

0

u/asmeile 6d ago

Ok I'll give you that, you are on the whole an ignorant bunch

2

What? That wasn't even the point you were making was it, let alone what I was saying. You said Americans didn't know what happened outside of America and I entirely agree

1

I dont disagree with your statement that "others know what's going on in America" hence my reply to your original comment made no mention of that

u/Ning_Yu 6d ago

I actually have no clue what most of those are.
