Karma farming

Yep. Cute animal subs (cat ones in particular) used to be my favourite thing about reddit. Now they’re populated almost entirely by bots, because these subs easily collect karma which makes the account look legit. And nothing happens if you report them! Very disappointing.

I see that but I don't understand what the point of it is!

It’s because an account that has a lot of karma and a seemingly solid history looks trustworthy, so once it’s built up enough credibility scammers can use it to sell things that don’t exist, charge for services they can’t perform, or do other generally dodgy things.

I don’t think individual accounts can advertise on reddit, but sometimes it’ll be linked to an account on Instagram or TikTok which is posting fake or misleading adverts, so the reddit account works as a way of convincing people that there’s just one real person behind it and the whole thing is legit.

Reddit used to clamp down on this, but over the last few years they’ve made it clear that they really don’t care any more.

That's really interesting, thank you so much for explaining it! I keep seeing the reference so I'll be much more aware of it now.

Things to look out for:

A relatively new account with high post karma and not so much for the comments;

Comments that read like AI (they tend to be generic, bland well-wishes);

Loads of posts on cute animal subreddits, but of different animals with titles that suggest the poster knows them personally. Like, several posts saying things like “here’s my beautiful cat!” but it’s a different cat each time.

My list isn’t exhaustive or foolproof, but it can help you pick them out. Those karma-farming accounts are a scammer’s dream, and a plague on the site.
