Trichotillomania (Hair-Pulling Disorder) Research
Hi! I am currently working on a research paper to advance our understanding of trichotillomania. Your participation helps medical professionals and scientists develop better forms of treatment for the estimated 200,000 Americans with TTM. The questionnaire is a Google form (approx. 5 min long) that is open to everyone who has/had trichotillomania. The more people who participate, the stronger our research will be, so please feel free to share. Thank you for your time, you are making a difference :) https://forms.gle/iB958cgTDpPbx5pZ8

Done, appreciate you putting this together and I hope you can follow up to this post with any stats or findings from your research with this data. I wish people would do this more.

Oh yes! Thanks for mentioning this.
OP, I second this! I’d love to see the results, no matter how long it takes you to put it together or package it for dissemination and in what format you choose to use (as a fellow researcher, I wouldn’t expect results overnight).
It’s so heartening to see the incredible response from all of us, and while I’m biased, I think this research is incredibly important and interesting. Just being part of this and the other trich-related subs, I’ve learned so much about the different ways this presents and the myriad triggers, methods, and effects on our looks, feelings of worth, and our quality of life.

Thank you so much :) A lot of people live with trich, and unfortunately there are very few research studies done on it. I really hope to help people with trichotillomania feel recognized and understood, while working on treatment options.

If I had a nickel for every former therapist of mine who literally started looking up trich in front of me in shock and confusion at the first appointment, I'd have like 25 cents. Which isn't a lot as money goes, but ultimately it's led me to accept the disorder, manage it as best I can by myself, and just soldier on. The thing is, I don't think it's as rare as they say. We learn to hide our condition like superspies because of the associated shame and social penalties. 200,000 sounds like a lot but I would wager the true number is rather higher. Good luck with your research. It's sorely needed.

Do you do your research trough some sort of institute like a university or is it for personal purposes? How will you publish the results?

Done. Thank you for the work you are doing. It's so amazing. Back in the 70s no one knew what was wrong with me and my parents and grandparents shamed me. My mother has since apologized for doing that. But we've come along way since then, your work pushes it even further to find answers

Just wanted to say that the support and sheer number of responses I have gotten over the last few hours have been incredible. Thank everyone SO much. I have struggled from trich my whole life and know what it's like to feel lost and ashamed. I'm putting all of my time and energy into this research to try and advance our medical professionals' understanding and knowledge of trichotillomania. Thank you, thank you.
