Mark Twain wrote, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

St Augustine “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page”.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness
It's insane that there are people who view multiculturalism as a bad thing; this explains why.

For me Rick Steves is up there with Steve Irwin, Fred Roger’s and Bob Ross. May he have a speedy recovery and many more travels ahead of him.

PBS is a national treasure. It’s all I was allowed to watch really as a little kid & I ended up working for the PBS radio & tv station on my university campus to help put me through school. A really great experience and it’s one of the nonprofits I contribute to every year, no matter where I live.

Rick Steves is a national treasure. He is every dipshit American if they behaved respectfully abroad. Americans should only be allowed to watch Rick Steves on international outbound flights.

I feel like people understand this inherently and this is why there's such a crazy travel boom going on since covid. Record numbers of people are traveling everywhere. I think with the crazy stress that comes from this weird political climate, people really badly need to connect often to their roots, but also just to people who aren't like them to reassure themselves that this world is nowhere near as bad as comes across on social media. I traveled to Europe this summer for the first time in my life and although all the arts and architecture are incredible, the most memorable moments are as simple as talking to an Italian about their dog.

Many of us also had a unique experience during quarantine. We were able to watch others around the world through our virtual windows, and see them dealing with the same challenges we were experiencing.
It made the world seem both bigger and smaller, simultaneously.
Until the US president, his political lackeys, and followers, started sowing dissent and hatred there was a unique moment when it felt like the world came together in shared experience.
I miss that that moment. I miss seeing Italians singing together from their balconies. I miss seeing funny videos from everywhere, and people in Korea and Singapore teaching us how to make Dalgona coffee. I miss everyone’s attempts at sourdough bread.
I don’t miss the disease (especially since it’s still here,) the fear, or the quarantine. But I do miss that brief moment when it truly felt like we were sharing a window in time.

If you haven’t already, look into Rick Steve’s Travel. We have gone on three of his European tours: group of about 20 people, local guides ( most seem to be retired professors )for each part of the tour; they walk you to death touring out of the way local nooks and crannies that you would never imagine or know existed.

My wife and I love to travel. I’ve been to far more countries than I have states. Nothing beats it.

I sort of wish we could drop MAGAts off at separate points all over the world, where they have to rely on the kindness of strangers.
On the other hand, what a terrible thing to do to the rest of the world.

I know this is supposed to be nice and stuff but I just can’t shake a dislike for the bigotry that lauded travel only to display it on a screen. “Not through a viewfinder” recorded on a camera.
And no, not everyone you meet is a friend.
Sorry to be a downer.

That moment you realize that French fries are not served in every Parisian restaurant. We’ve been lied to!
