60 fps YouTube version: https://youtu.be/v2rFOEuSulA
🍎 It started as a chiptune in a '90s video game, then it was remixed into a Japanese pop song by Alstroemeria Records. A user from Nico Nico Douga uploaded a storyboard, inspiring a flood of animations. But it was the collaborative effort led by a user named Anira that released the definitive shadow-art version of the music video. This mesmerizing black-and-white video quickly turned into an internet meme and has been ported to everything from retro consoles to graphing calculators. And now, through the incredible teamwork of countless users on the r/place 2023 canvas, this cultural gem found a new form. To celebrate this unique piece of internet history, I've captured its evolution in a 3D timelapse video.
What am I looking at?
This 3D animation shows the evolution of the "Bad Apple" animation on the r/place 2023 canvas, which was organized by the r/ItPlaysBadApple subreddit. The real-time animation speed was one frame every 39 seconds. To make the animation match the speed of the music, I had to speed it up by a factor of 1170.
The height of a given pixel is determined by a combination of how recently and how frequently that pixel was placed. You can think of it as a "heat map".
How was this made?
I used a set of Python scripts which you can find here to download and process the r/place 2023 dataset. The data was used to create a set of 14,598 color and heat maps (one set per frame). These maps were then loaded into Blender and used to create a 3D animation with Blender's geometry nodes feature.
My other animations
- r/place 2022 "Difficult Subject" music video
- r/place 2022 "Void Cube" animation
- r/place 2022 Star Wars animation
- r/place 2022 Canadian flag animation
More info
Thanks
A big thanks goes out to all of the artists involved in the creation of this animation, especially the ones who actually placed the pixels on r/place. I would also like to thank the r/ItPlaysBadApple subreddit for organizing the r/place 2023 canvas. Finally, I would like to thank the creators of the original "Bad Apple" animation for inspiring this project.

Can confirm. I’m crossing the border today to get an MRI in the US because my health care system is failing.

Also it says "botting is cringe" at the end- you didn't use any bots at all to make that? How many people approximately worked on placing pixels for the whole thing?

I think that what they are referring to when they say "botting" is when a single user who controls hundreds or thousands of accounts places pixels using a script. I took a peed at their Discord server when I was making this animation and it looks like they use some tools (maybe a browser extension) to coordinate pixel placements, but it's not an automated process like with "botting".

The internet is a magical place. It says something about humans that we can get together and do cool stuff like this. The best part? There’s no purpose other than joy. That’s pretty fucking cool.

Why was the Bitcoin logo blurry throughout the entire video? Not accurate.

That's the "depth of field" effect on the camera. The bitcoin logo is simply not in focus. Understandably, it's a bummer if you are interested in seeing a particular artwork that's not in focus, but I thought it was a good tradeoff to give a sense of scale to the canvas.

How did people know where to place each pixel and when to change it?
