Might be a lot to rant into the void like this, but growing up, I had a friend whose dad kinda had this warped sense of socialism. We got into an argument (I was hard-headed, and he was the kind to want to be always right to all his son's friends) about many things like trains, Elon musk taking Twitter (at the time, before the acquisition), and the role of "high skill" labor like doctors in society.

His point to the high skill labor was that communism and socialism force you to never see one again, because they get "bought out" by the greedy socialists so poorer people will never get the proper care they need. I asked him straightforward; "why would the socialists want Medicare for all then?" He responded that such "bullshit" is meant to hide the fact that "we" would get the lowest quality service, but the top payer would be getting the best care because they paid. "As socialism always said it would be."

I picked at him twice with that question, because my response to it was "well, if that's what we are doing now, how could-". He would cut in to proclaim "No NO, right now we have a FAIR Healthcare system, because the people who can pay for the best service are getting it!" Couldn't get him to work out that part any slower.

My point is, a lot of regular folks just hear the words as a boogeyman, and force the worldview they think it would become onto it. Same for my parents, who I asked simply to define socialism, and unironically spat back out "when the government does stuff".

having the issue on that board with the word fascism too, as they're telling me that the democrats are actually fascist because of a vaccine mandate on federal employees.
