Way to get discounted RX in CA / Sacramento?

Edit: THANK YOU, I got it discounted. This stuff should be common knowledge, I'll keep the post up in case anyone else wants to look at the suggestions.

I aged out of my parents' insurance. I have my own insurance starting February, but I am currently on anti-depressants. I thought I could get a 90 day refill to cover that gap, but the insurance denied it so I have to pay out of pocket for January and part of February. It's around $160 for a refill with no insurance.

Saving the details, but my depression is very bad and chronic. I have a rough history and I've tried the "take a walk" "go outside" "go to the gym" and none of it worked, I was still suicidal 24/7 even with a very active lifestyle and clean eating. I'm super worried about going cold turkey, I have 8 days of medicine left.

When I was in another state I went to the urgent care for a high fever, and they gave me a coupon that let me get my medicine for free at the pharmacy. Is there anything like that here? Coupons or maybe an org that will cover medicine one time? I can definitely stretch one bottle to the mid Feb date.

Thanks

I use this for my antirejection meds and it saves me tons, even better prices than using my insurance elsewhere.

I’m surprised they don’t carry insulin. I thought that was one of the reasons he started doing this.

I think he’s working on it but it had something to do with having different varieties of insulin so they couldn’t cover everyone’s needs and that it’s expensive to produce

adding, try one of the discount card apps (free) like GoodRX. the savings can be ridiculous

It depends on the pharmacy you get it filled at. I used to have great experience with GoodRx but CVS stopped taking it, along with any other prescription coupons. Healthcare is so comically messed up that we have to even do this.

At Safeway I was paying $300/month and was me and a girlfriend’s food budget basically.. I felt pretty bad. Someone gave me a stack of those goodrx cards and I just showed them one thinking they were gonna be like nah.

Only cost $60 from there on out. This was like 2018 but I still remember how cool that was.

All CVS pharmacies stopped taking it?

That’s what the cashier told me when I was charged 800 dollars for a name brand prescription that she said I could appeal insurance decision for. If she wasn’t mistaken, I would assume this is all CVS pharmacies, but maybe she just meant they only don’t accept coupons for name brand anymore. And maybe it was just for my specific prescription.

GoodRX saved me $1000 a month over my insurance.

Check with Costco. You don't need to be a member for pharmacy and I believe they have a discounted prescription program for cash payments. You can check the price of meds on their site as well.

+1 for Costco. Especially if your medication is available as a generic, their prices can be very low.

Another vote for Mark Cuban's prescription website. GoodRX is also an excellent option for certain drugs...

Ask the pharmacist to look for coupons, they can sometimes help you find deals

Depending on the medication you may be able to get it free from the manufacturer. Try https://www.needymeds.org/

Seconding this. Check with the medication manufacturer for coupons and discounts.

I second speaking with your pharmacist. They are usually a good resource. You can also talk to the prescriber/doctor bc they may be able to help.

I'm not sure I can talk to the doc again without being charged, but I will call the pharmacy. Some of the recommendations people have commented seem to be great!! Super appreciative

Walmart has 4 dollar(30 days)/10 dollar(90 days) prescriptions.

Don't go without medical insurance, look into your eligibility for Medi-Cal.

It is definitely not good to go cold turkey on psych meds.

Canada Pharmacy is a reputable out of country source. You do need a paper prescription if your doctor is willing to do that. Agree with others GoodRx too.

Which medication?

It's called bupropion. I was put on zoloft before but had very bad side effects, buproprion has quite literally saved my life.

I just went on mark cubans website called cost plus. I typed in bupropion HCI and they have it for as low as 6.81$ for 30 at 75mg. Look it up and see if you can find the exact one you need

I just found it on there too (: I'm on the 150, so I'd have to get 60 count tof 75, still pretty damn cheap.... WAY better than the $160 my pharmacy told me.

I'm silly, it's buproprion XL which is the larger mg! I got the discount on Mark Cubans, thanks! (:

Glad to help where I can

Were you able to get your meds? If not id highly advise using that good Rx card it'll bring it down a lot

1

u/GrrrArrgh 18h ago

The app GoodRx has coupons and shows the retail price at different pharmacies, it can vary by a lot.

2

u/jones_ro 17h ago

also look at the GoodRx app. We saved hundreds on epipen.

I'm addition to the recommendations here, but sure to review your insurance Rx coverage details for 30-day vs 90-day. My insurance covers 30 day refills but not 90 day refills, which is frustrating and stupid.

Why do you have no insurance? Are you not eligible for Medi-cal?

Try volunteering in churches or such. Talking to people helps.

I volunteer a lot.
