Player Guide Red Dead 2 Online Animal Pelt and Carcass Prices
When my sister and I couldn't find any sites with detailed prices for carcasses and pelts, we decided to make our own. I'm still missing just a few and would appreciate any input or corrections if you have them. I have also included the link to the pdf.

I have a noob question...when this says carcass, is it the carcass that has been skinned? Let's say I kill a 3* cougar, should I skin it AND put the carcass on the horse? Would that net me the 13.50 PLUS 5.00?
19
u/WolverineWithRabies Jul 20 '19
I'm 99% certain these are the prices for unskinned carcasses. I do know that skinning a carcass will reduce the carcass price, however, when you take into account the pelt, skinned carcass, meat, and let's say a couple cougar fangs you will end up with more money than just selling the unskinned carcass. I just don't know the exact numbers.
12
u/mak11 Jul 20 '19
I don’t know about a cougar, but with a 3* buck you get an extra ~$1.20 iirc from skinning it first and selling everything including the skinned carcass. Just make sure you can hold all of the animal’s meat/fangs/claws/antlers before you skin, or skin right at the butcher after selling off everything else if convenient. If there’s someone lurking at the butcher, I’ll just sell the unskinned carcass. I’d rather lose $1.20 than $10.

u/CavemanGamer Trader Jul 20 '19
Yeah I think that is the kind of chart we need. We need to know if it's worth skinning or selling the carcass whole.

u/Kitchen-Lab-971 Jan 24 '22
Whole carcasses are always worth more
1
u/Acrobatic-Move-3847 Nov 26 '22
That’s actually wrong, nearly every animal is worth more when you break it down except for fish, and some of the smaller animals, like squirrels, chipmunks and rats.
1
u/nossjma Sep 17 '22
That's what this chart us up top. A skinned one then then it shows skinned dead animals body price.
For whole unskinned animals Add usually bout $2 to common animal's to $4 for uncommon animals not skinned
Common deer bucks antelope etc
Medium elk sheep rams wolves
In common moose cougars panthers bears
3
u/Cstella33 Jul 24 '19
These ARE for unskinned carcasses. Thank you for clarifying that on the comments for the others.
2
u/Wolf290703 Bounty Hunter Jul 20 '19
It's not a ton. Usually only an extra .75 to a dollar. Maybe more depending on the animal.
1
u/nossjma Sep 17 '22
Prices for skinned you can sell a unskilled grizzled or elk cause you can't pick them up. These are the pelts hence pelts an the hence carcasses
A carcass is the dead animals skinned body.5
u/Wolf290703 Bounty Hunter Jul 20 '19
These are the prices for the unskinned carcasses only unfortunately. The price didn't use to change but that was a big and they patched it now. I always skin my animals cuz you usually make about .75 to a dollar more but it's so close it doesn't really matter. Obviously if you kill two or more animals skin them cuz you can take unlimited pelts.

u/PM_me_your_fantasyz Jul 20 '19
Some things are worth skinning and selling the carcass, others aren't.
Off the top of my head: You come out behind if you skin Cougars and panthers, but come out ahead if you pluck Condors and eagles.
Birds that fit in your satchel are always worth skinning if they are good or poor, but sometimes aren't if they are perfect.

u/Stakoman Jul 20 '19 edited Jul 20 '19
Yeap... Always skin it.
I already did the test my self
Here's the prices from the panther I killed:
Got to the butcher with the Perfect panther carcass - 14$
So then I skinned it... Perfect panther pelt - 6,25$ Perfect panther carcass - 7$ AND If I'm not mistaken I got 4 big game meat (0,75 x 4 = 3$ and
the fang.I think the fang it's only the cougar? So that's more money than just the perfect carcass.
I was actually doing my own list lol but nothing serious, just writing the prices now and then.
Edit: formatting and corrections
2
u/PM_me_your_fantasyz Jul 20 '19
Every once in a while I consider making my own master list of prices, to keep track of things like the fact that all squirrels become Good squirrel pelts when broken down, and that half the wading birds have been nerfed to only drop one plume.
And then I just don't.
Also, I have a sneaking suspicion that every time someone posts a master list like this and reports on which animal you can hunt for the best return on your time, Rockstar just comes along and uses that information to reduce everyone's cash stream.
1
u/Cstella33 Jul 24 '19
I agree with you. This is the reason why I only added unskinned carcasses but did add plucked birds. I am much less likely to skin multiple animals and bring them in. I tend to pile up pelts and bring in one big carcass or pelt unskinned. This was why I made a chart because we kept asking "what is worth more on the back on my horse?" I always pluck birds and if I have room, take the carcass in. Although a three star muscrat or rabbit gets the seat every time. LOL

Always skin there's more stuff to sell on some animals selling carcas 5 selling it whole 7 skinning it pelt 4 carcas 5. Tooth .75 claw or heart .60 an 2.75. The meat 1.00.
Now like A regular doe pelt an meat maybe 5 an .50. But whole it's $7. So don't skin but take it asap or it's rating drops as it rots on horse

Curious how one sells the alligator carcass
17
u/Lilin_ Naturalist Jul 20 '19
The little alligator carcasses fit on your horse and their pelt works like a deer pelt and is stackable.
14
u/PM_me_your_fantasyz Jul 20 '19
What's really interesting about the small gators is that their skins are worth exactly the same as the larger ones that take up the carcass slot on the back of your horse.
Someone is getting a great deal out of that, and I don't think it's the people selling the full sized skins.

u/rayden_321x Jul 20 '19
I think you can lasso it
1
u/mrpotatoeman Jul 20 '19
No.
10
u/Impossible_Phase Jul 20 '19
You can lasso it when it's not skinned. You can't sell it though, so it's mostly useless unless you enjoy running around the city carrying a dead gator behind you for no reason (which I do).

Great post! Keep in mind that there is a small and large gator which are worth different prices.
14
u/groats_active Jul 20 '19
Pelts provide the same prices, only difference is the amount of meat acquired through skinning, and the small gator carcasses can be sold.
2
u/MrMegaMario64 Clown Jul 22 '19
Ah you’re right. I did check myself. I could have sworn the large ones were like 25 cents better in the skins, but I guess not. I did know the other stuff though mentioned in your reply. Thanks for saying something.

Is there any way to get this in a format that's a little more customizable? Like an google spreadsheet? I find lists organized this way to be hard to use when they aren't divided into categories based on how much space they take in the different inventories (i.e., satchel storage, small horse storage, large horse storage).
Either way, fantastic job and thanks for doing all that work!
1
u/mrpotatoeman Jul 20 '19
What do you mean " large/small horse storage"? Are you talking about upgraded saddlebags? As far as i know, all it does is allow for 3 or 5 custom outfits to be saved on the horse and does not affect the carry capacity of anything else.
3
u/PM_me_your_fantasyz Jul 20 '19
Some items go across the back of the horse (large horse storage), and some hang on the sides (small horse storage).
3
Jul 21 '19
This is what I meant. The decisions I find myself needing to make are along the lines of “should I keep this good cougar carcass or trade it out for this perfect bison skin?” or “should I trade this perfect turkey carcass for this perfect rabbit carcass?”
Prices for things stored in the satchel I don’t actually care much about because they all get their own stack. Heron feathers don’t displace Egret feathers, so I never need to ask myself which feathers are worth more.
3
u/TheARKHost Jul 20 '19
You should add a column for how much you can carry at one time which directly relates to farmability
2
Jul 20 '19
I haven't tested the max on pelts* but I assume it would be 50 or 99 (I think when the red pike dupe was going on I saw a pic of a stack of 99 red pikes). However I do know pelts go above 10, I used to hunt goats/elk/deer/cougars/hawks/owls/geese in northwestern ambarino and goats are a good source of money and are usually in packs of 3-5. A poor pelt is $1.10 which is more than a poor deer pelt so I would just kill any goats I saw, the highest yeild (of one kind of goat pelt) was 17.
Theres a big game spot on the back of the horse and 2 small game spots, one one each side. Most meats stack to 10 but venison and tenderloin (pigs/boars) stack to 20 ($12 for 20 venison and $9.50 for 20 tenderloins)
Edit: words
Edit 2: prime beef (bison/cows/ox/bulls) also stacks to 20 and are $9.50/20
2
u/TheARKHost Jul 20 '19
This is a great response thank you. I was think especially for fish that number becomes important - small mouth bass stacks to 10 for $20 per stack and salmon stacks to $30. So hitting two spots just southwest of valentine can bet you up to $50 as quick as you can catch them, which is the fastest way I’ve found so far of grinding cash.
Great work, again.
3
Jul 20 '19
No problem but salmon stacks are $25. But you, at bards crossing, can catch steelhead trout($25/10), salmon, and small mouth bass so you could make $70 there.
2
u/TheARKHost Jul 21 '19
Also good answers again, I’ll try that thank you. Ya broken down are only $0.30-$0.40 I think which isn’t worth it based on my math atleast
1
Jul 21 '19
You're welcome. I saw on the list itd be $4/10 flaky meat and $6/10 succulent, in terms of catching 20 and breaking 10 down its probably not worth it when that could just as easily be killing 2 perfect rabbits on your way to the butcher (perfect rabbits are $4/ea unskinned)
2
2
u/PM_me_your_fantasyz Jul 21 '19
If you start all the way down at Bards Crossing fishing in Iron Lake you can snag Largemouth bass as well, for an extra $20.
1
Jul 20 '19
Sorry I didnt want to make an edit but I dont know what succulent or flaky fish meat prices are. I'm sure not more than $0.30 so you could catch 10 and break down and catch 10 more to sell whole but it might not be as time effective as catching 10 at the dakota river, running to valentine to sell them and then go back fishing
3
u/groats_active Jul 20 '19
Poor and good pelts/carcasses are, respectively, 40% and 60% of the price of their perfect counterparts.
2
u/Voltiger Jul 20 '19
And an unskinned carcass is worth twice as much as one that's been plucked or skinned.
3
u/mrpotatoeman Jul 20 '19
But does it account for the organs, claws, fat and meat gained? Its still best to skin them afaik.
1
u/groats_active Jul 20 '19
I think the ideal strategy is to skin anything aside from perfect quality to fill meat etc., unless you have more than 1 pristine, keep high value unskinned pristine carcasses to sell when you bring your haul in.
2
u/SophBegg Jul 20 '19
Depends on if you have room for the meat and parts. Perfect cougar is $13.50 unskinned, but when you skin a perfect cougar you get a pelt ($5.00), carcass ($6.75), 4 Big Game meat ($3.00), and two cougar fangs ($1.00) for a total of $15.75.

Thank you to everyone for the wonderful comments! I wasn't expecting such a response. This has been months of what we've been calling "research" and losing money just to see what a poor price is when I could've taken in a perfect animal LOL. I'm going to wait just a little while until i gather some of the prices you've given me and get a few more and I will update the chart. I'm also not opposed to adding a skinned carcass price column in the future. Thank you all!!!

5
Jul 20 '19
Pelts have up to 99 stack limit (I think), I've sold 17 goat pelts at once
2
u/fireal20 Jul 21 '19
I meant to distinguish between a stackable pelt and something like an alligator where you can only put one on your horse

Does skinning the animal take down the overall price? If I skinned it and turned in the carcass would it be less payout than just turn it in the carcass?
2
Jul 20 '19
No, you get more for selling the skinned carcass, pelt, and meat (and antlers/teeth when applicable)
For a perfect buck carcass you get $10, but when you skin it and sell it all you get like $11.20. You get a few more (like $2) for selling skinned cougars/meat/teeth/pelt and same for Panthers. It may be only a dollar or two more but that's the same as selling an extra low grade pelt so basically 2 for one
1
u/Captain_Jalapeno Jul 21 '19
Bottom line, mowing down deer is your highest money maker per minute. Faster than fish because you can down 3-4 of them in one shooting spree, then go after another deer spawn. Anything that takes up a whole carcass slot or is too hard to make spawn is a waste of time to deliberately go after. Have one good or great carcass for the trip to the butcher, but only when its time to stop hunting and just be loading up on pelts. Ferrying one great carcass is too much of a time sink to be doing multiple times for that higher price. Ive rarely bothered using bait, but perhaps I should start using it more to be more tactical and efficient on my deer hunts.
1
u/crimsontrinh Jul 21 '19
Just so you know, you can actually get any small animal skins too, like rats. You get them after you break them down. Not that anyone would do it, just thought it be useful to know
1
u/yuch1102 Jul 21 '19 edited Jul 21 '19
are these accurate? 3 star whitetail bucks carcass is no longer 10$, they nerfed the prices a few months ago. It is 5$ now I believe.
also 3 star pronghorn carcasses are not 6.50$, but around 3-4$. 3 star rabbits carcasses are not 3.50$, it's $1.50 for 3 stars.
1
u/Cstella33 Jul 24 '19
My prices are accurate as of the date of this post for unskinned carcasses. Almost every animal has been taken to the butcher by us to get the correct price.

just want to add something because I haven't seen it specifically mentioned anywhere.
If you have a bunch of animals needing to skin and you don't like sitting through all the skinning animations, back up like 10 feet and RUN towards the dead animal and as soon as you get the SKIN prompt, press it. It should instantly take the skin off (instead of go through the animation).
It doesn't work every single time but does more often than not.
EDIT: seems to work best if the bodies are close together.
