Blue baby

Has blood round her blackened mouth

Her gums bled from the cold

She'd bit her wooden tongue

And crisped the frost.

Two months old

With eyes in crater holes

Like the surface of the moon

Baby dies so soon

All yellow and blue.

Hard as a doll

Pure as the snow

Soft as a rose.

Froze at two months old

No shelter, nowhere to go

Trudging in flipflops down the road.

And when the doctor pronounced her an hour dead

And her father hung his head

He was glad for the winter's mercy

The Rafah winds took pity

On the newborn baby.

Down in the tents of Rafah

Where rain turns bare feet muddy

Where they eat sand they're so hungry

Where they weigh flesh to count the bodies
