Still not a great upgrade. I finished it on PC and wanted to get a PS5 physical copy for my Pro, but the 60fps mode is still honestly quite shit even on the Pro.

FF7 Rebirth, Silent Hill 2, Wukong. I’m sure there are others I’m not thinking of. But visuals and performance are massively disappointing lately.

Rebirth I’ve bought for the Pro as the upgrade seems pretty good, but silent hill 2 and wukong I made sure to get on PC

How so? Does it dip well below 60fps? Or are the visuals bad?

The 60 FPS mode isn't actually a 60 FPS mode, it's just a lower-resolution/settings version of the quality mode using FSR3 framegen. So it's actually running at 30 FPS and then creating another 30 frames which means it looks kind of shit (because it uses lower resolutions + upscaling and framegen) and has pretty much the same input lag as the 30 FPS mode since framegen incurs an input delay, especially at lower frame rates.

I thought it was running at like 40-45 with frame gen up to 60. 40fps frame gen to 60 actually doesn’t feel too bad on a PC game with a controller (really only had to do that with path traced cyberpunk), but 30 to 60, no thanks.

I was kinda shocked how bad the graphics looked to me in quality mode on PS5.
Videos of the game looked great on my phone, but in person on a big screen the image quality was bad and the graphics lacked ... detail? all the seams came apart, even the effects like that fight in the clouds that looks awesome in videos felt so underwhelming. At least for how much the graphics were hyped I was disappointed, luckyly it was only the PS+ trial.
Willing to give it another try after the Pro patch. at least 120hz and maybe forced VRR will feel much better. still no HDR though I guess? I wonder how that's still a thing in 2024.

Games this gen have gotten progressively worse in terms of optimization and 2024 especially has been really bad
FF7 Rebirth, Dragons dogma 2, Black myth wukong, Space marines 2 and Silent Hill 2 just off the top of my head

So digital foundry guy actually liked the patch. Says it’s steps in right direction with balanced mode being good on both base and pro.
Yes perf mods still not there though .

With how little changed in the performance mode, I wonder if it's a target for the next major patch. I'm in no rush to buy the game after the producer's recent public statements and am willing to wait for a more polished (true) 60fps experience on the PS5 Pro.

There won’t be. There’s been no talks of it and they didn’t bother to change anything now.

u/AwesomePossum_1 1d ago
There has been no talk of the pro patch either yet here we are. Considering they still have dlc in development so the game is far from being done, and the fact that performance mode didn't even get a resolution bump I think it's quite likely that it will be the next focus for the tech team.

u/Eruannster 17h ago
I don't think they changed it at all, honestly. And I don't think they can add PSSR to it since it uses FSR frame generation, and I don't think you can combine the two without weird, crazy things happening.

You can Trial the game and Patch, I personally do not find this game fun, it is boring aside from Intro

Aside from the intro? Got that deep in a trial huh?

u/Outrageous-Wall6386 1d ago
Yes? is 1hour or so, The beginning cool intro amazing effects fight is first 20mins.
IF the entire game was like that every hour, it wouldn't be boring TO ME.

u/ZeroZelath 1d ago
You have to build back up to that man, you're a noob monkey after the intro but it absolutely gets back there. A lot of the bosses are epic but you'll never know I guess lol, each to their own.

The combat feels absolutely weightless. It's also absurdly hard.

Skill issue.

Nah, I'm a fucking amazing gamer.

u/Ok-Translator68 1d ago
You wouldn’t be complaining about difficulty if you were
-7
u/whats8 1d ago
Making a statement on a game's difficulty level makes me a bad gamer, sure bud. 😂

I don’t know if what you’re saying is true or not, but I’m loving the confidence! Can I borrow some?

u/Probably_Sleepy 1d ago
If you play Souls like games this game is not that much more difficult so it's definitely a skill issue.

u/whats8 1d ago
I've platinumed every From Software Soulslike game. This game is harder by a good margin.

This game should be pretty easy and simple for you then, just play it like a dex build with the focus on dodging. Unless you did shield builds the entire way and blocked your way through the series.

u/iNSANELYSMART 1d ago
Well according what the other dudes said you seem to not be an amazing gamer then

u/seniorairmanscruffy 1d ago
Still not good enough for me to continue my play through. Got to one of the last optional bosses for a certain quest line and the environment combined with the particle effects from the boss make it unplayable and very frustrating. I’ll just wait it out I guess…
1
u/ForeverKeet 1d ago
Does it make it super blurry with artifacts or something? I haven’t played the game yet, just curious.
4
u/seniorairmanscruffy 1d ago
Nope just makes the game tank to unplayable FPS. That fight in particular gives me 15-20 with stutters.
Crazy how you get downvoted for exposing blatant dev laziness on this board
1
u/ForeverKeet 1d ago
Good god that sounds terrible. It’s crazy all this talk about frame gen and PSSR and everything… what happened to trying to make a game that works with console tech without all of these bandaid fixes to make a game that runs poorly appear as if it doesn’t? I feel like we’re never going to get a magical crystal clear fluid image/performance on a game not made to run that way on its own.
4
u/seniorairmanscruffy 1d ago
Yeah the days of optimization are clearly gone, all for pretty games that run like garbage, just so they can flex graphics in marketing.
Such a shame for BM:W because I really enjoyed my time with it up until the FPS became unbearable. I could deal with some drops, but constant stuttering and 15-20 fps is insane for a 60+ dollar game…

I wonder if PS5 performance is better. This was the worst performance I've ever had in a game. And I played Jedi Survivor at launch.
3
u/Section_80 1d ago
Sweet, I need to finish my trial, so this will be cool to check out before I decide to buy
5
u/AdamantiumLive 1d ago
Is the quality mode still 35 fps and the performance mode not actual 60 fps?
2
u/GetChilledOut 22h ago edited 22h ago
Quality - 30 capped
Balanced - 45, but 40 on 120Hz displays
Performance - 60 but with frame gen, so yeah fake 60Best mode for input lag is balanced, and honestly I think it’s the best trade off in general especially if you have a 120Hz display it’s a no brainer. Set to balanced and forget.

u/ofeliedeceai 1d ago
And it still looks like shit. One of the worst looking AAA games I've played.

I'm so back and forth on giving this game a try. Someone please tell me if it's worth it!

u/LowAdministration229 12h ago
It's a tough one... I was in the same spot, and recently picked up the physical edition. For me, the main pro is the levelling up system - I'm around 2/3 through the main story and I'm starting to feel the various upgrades and different spells getting beefier and making me super OP. It has a great variety of builds and easy re-spec of you want to change up.
The issue is, combat is not particularly great IMO. So despite all these options for how to play, I don't see myself going through an NG+ like I would on other games cause I'll have had my fill by the time I finish it once.
As others have said, it's nowhere near as polished as Stellar Blade. Despite having more moves/options overall, the weightlessness of the combat, lack of parry, and general "spamminess" of the fighting gets kinda repetitive. The bosses are varied and spectacular, but don't feel like they take much skill to beat, you just need to abuse a few OP moves.
Also, yeah, the performance is rough. Not deal breaking in my eyes (I have a 120Hz TV) but pretty distracting with the constant low res textures and terrible lighting when going into caves/dark spaces. I'd say wait for a sale, it's worth a play but probably not at full price.

So does it have any playable graphics mode on base PS5 by now?
2
u/froderick 1d ago
I believe the actual article has the information you seek.
1
u/Zikari82 23h ago
Just watched the Digital Foundry video on it. Quality mode now has steady 30fps on base PS5, Balanced actually works fine now on 120Hz display, but performance mode is still unplayable (frame gen from 30 to 60) on PS5 and PS5 pro...
1
u/froderick 23h ago
Yeah, sad state of affairs. Seems balanced is the way to play, regardless of console.
1
u/Zikari82 22h ago
I unfortunately don't have a 120Hz display, so Quality Mode it is for me. I played a couple of hours at launch, but I found all graphics options lacking on PS5, I might get back to it now that it is a bit better. I don't mind 30fps, as long as they are stable...

That patch has been out for more than a week, no?
