Discussion PSA: You can use a PS5 with a keyboard

If you don't have a PS5 or PS4 controller and just have a PS5, you can use a keyboard to get to the media apps. Hopefully this helps someone like me (I'm waiting for my controller to arrive!)

Also, if you have a TV with CEC (pretty much any decent TV within the past 5-7 years) you can control the PS5 with your TV remote ( it sends the signals over the HDMI cable). You can switch to the PS5 input and it will turn on automatically. Makes it a great media box! These settings need to be on in the tv and the PS5.

Yeah I just noticed a few days ago that I can control my PS5 with my Samsung remote.

u/NinjaMonkey22 1d ago

For any other Samsung users that also use another streaming device + a ps5, you can use the SmartThings app to setup an automation so when the TV turns on it switches to a specific input (not a setting available on my S90c).

In my case when my TV turns on it switches to my AppleTv. If I want to play my ps5 turning the controller on will switch the input to the PS5 (same is true if I start the ps5 and the tv is off). Super useful so my wife/kid turn on the TV and they can use the AppleTV to stream with no added inputs. Same with me and the PS5.

Yeah this is cool but my new TV works in a way that turns on the PS5 every time I turn on the TV when the PS5 was the last used device so I had to turn cec off

That’s a PlayStation setting. You can turn that off in settings https://youtu.be/nemJGXJJxcM?si=zDeAejQx0CG4EzgY

Damn thanks!

Its all fun and games until you (or kid/dog) accidentaly sit on your remote and tv turns off during an important part of the game, which then turns the PS5 off.

3

u/Johncarllos 1d ago

Thankfully the PS5 will save the game state for any single player game.

6

u/larsvondank 1d ago

Not during a nailbiting FC24 game tho I tell ya.

4

u/Johncarllos 1d ago

😂 Not much you can do there, except maybe keep the remote on a table or in a drawer.

2

u/larsvondank 1d ago

Yup. I did that, but some forces of nature always make it end up on my couch, which is why I have turned the whole function off. Results may vary 😅

u/TamiasciurusDouglas 1d ago

Not true. You can avoid 99% of these occurrences by choosing to not live with children or dogs

1

u/1-800drachisass 1d ago

What if they’re your kids though

2

u/TamiasciurusDouglas 22h ago

You could always try building a time machine.

I really don't mean to disrespect parents or children... but I always find it amusing when people talk about their parental duties as if they didn't sign up for them.

The downside to this--unless there's a way around it that I'm not aware of--is that turning on the TV also turns on the PS5.

So when I want to play a game on my Switch, which is on the same TV, I wind up having my PS5 on in the background.

1

u/AncientGamerBloke 1d ago

You can disable that on the PS5 in Settings -> System -> turn off HDMI power link

5

u/Lewa358 1d ago

Yeah but then the TV doesn't turn on when the PS5 does. Which is kinda the only thing I want from this CEC connection.

2

u/KingKang22 1d ago

Always enable this on all your devices; especially if you have a soundbar through arc with media devices to the tv. One remote to rule them all.

4

u/maldouk 1d ago

Definetely not always. It's ok if you have only one way of consuming media. I use 3, so it's just very unpracticable

1

u/S-X-A 1d ago

My PS5 hasn’t played well with this feature on my LG CX since I got it.

0

u/bukakkebiceps 1d ago

i have a vizio from 2010 that has CEC also

A shitload of people don't know this. If you type with a keyboard on Overwatch, they'll start accusing you of playing on PC because they haven't made the connection between a USB port and a keyboard.

38

u/Christhebobson 2d ago edited 2d ago

Shoot, you don't even need a USB port. Mine connects wirelessly without a dongle since PS3.

7

u/Bill_Brasky01 2d ago

Same PS3 Bluetooth was goat

4

u/spatchwork 2d ago

Yeah' I used a keyboard to text chat since PS2 (monster Hunter online)

5

u/Christhebobson 2d ago

Reminds me of when I played FF 11 on PS2 and quickly realized I needed to get a kb to survive and progress. No idea what kind I had at that time of life though.

1

u/ehtseeoh 1d ago

PS2 had 2 USB ports in the front, so you probably used a usb keyboard. Good times. Had to install the modem in the back for it too.

u/Q__________________O 2d ago

Little did they know that the ps3 supported keyboards, incl in some games(mouse too) So why wouldnt the ps5? Who likes typing using a controller?

9

u/docgravel 2d ago

I used to play Quake 3 Arena online on the Dreamcast with a mouse and keyboard (took up 2 controller plugs) and it was hilarious how dominant I was and I’m not even that good at shooters. Stand slightly above or below your opponents and your advantage was amazing.

2

u/Skvall 1d ago

Haha I did the same. Total domination.

And my friend still insisted that controller "was equally good" lol.

2

u/LinusBeartip FrostWolf-5 1d ago edited 1d ago

CSGO, Unreal tournament 3 and maybe also FF14 when it was on PS3 supported keyboards

2

u/No_Election_3206 1d ago

There are games that support it, it just needs to be enabled by developers. Usually the reason that it's disabled is that it gives you an edge when playing against controller players. Or there is additional development needed that developers don't want to put money towards.

Deep Rock Galactic can be played with mouse and keyboard for example

1

u/MeatHamster 2d ago

PS2 did too. IRC basic usb keyboard and mouse should work.

3

u/This_Guy_33 1d ago

If you don’t type in FFXIV people will assume you are on console. What a twist!

1

u/DizzySkunkApe 1d ago

I thought I was unable to play Overwatch ranked with my friends because they're on console and I'm on PC? Is that not accurate?

27

u/hybroid 2d ago

You can also setup Remote Play and use your phone/tablet or even PC/Mac.

https://www.playstation.com/en-us/remote-play/

5

u/Mekanimal 1d ago

Adding to this, PS4 controllers can be "remapped" through Remote Play into being compatible for PS5 games.

6

u/_sendbob 2d ago

IIRC this has been a thing since PS3

1

u/BuddhaRockstar 1d ago

Even since PS2: online games like Everquest used keyboards for text chat.

u/demonsta500 2d ago

Where did you get a PS5 that doesn't come with a controller ? Did you get one used without a controller ?

2

u/Kuzame 2d ago

Maybe the controller broke/has a heavy stick drift to the point it's unusable

-10

u/KingKang22 1d ago

Quicker to navigate, type.

6

u/MikeSouthPaw 2d ago

Thanks for the tip, enjoy your PS5!

28

u/MrRendition 1d ago

Since OP still hasn't told us why he doesn't have a controller, I'm going to assume he stole it.

4

u/No-Impression-9420 1d ago

It comes with a controller.. how do you not have a controller?

1

u/HopefullyAGoodTrip 1d ago

I've been asked this question like 50 times in this thread alone...

The PS5 was given to me by a family member, and everyone just assumes that they bought it for me new, but they owned it. During the Christmas party, I guess the controller was either stolen, misplaced, or lord knows because I tore up the whole house but could not find it.

12

u/ForDAhaterzZ 2d ago

I use this little guy. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMKTNKNS/ref=emc_bcc_2_i

A Large keyboard might be easier for some people, but this is pretty handy. It lights up lol. Reminds me of the old sidekick phones back in the day 😂😂

3

u/Sadpvper 1d ago

I tried it, not for my liking tho... I have big hands and those tiny buttons were a pain in the ass

2

u/neverOddOrEv_n 2d ago

I had one of these back then I remember it being really helpful

1

u/funny_bunchesof_oats 2d ago

How’s the quality of the buttons?

3

u/ForDAhaterzZ 2d ago

I like them. Not loud but they have a small auditory click and u can def feel the click when you type.

Its bluetooth as well so it doesnt have to be plugged into the controller to work 👍🏼

1

u/funny_bunchesof_oats 2d ago

Fantastic thanks for the info!

1

u/ForDAhaterzZ 2d ago

happy to help💯

u/Lew1989 1d ago edited 1d ago

Use to have a similar one on ps3, back then messaging everyone was shocked at how fast I could reply and how big the messages were 😂

0

u/meryl_gear 1d ago

Everyone else - No u

2

u/Kelseer 1d ago

It’s weird but I wish it was supported for ps5 remote play from a PC for FFXIV haha

2

u/Mysterious_Fennel459 1d ago

How do you have a console and not a controller? They all come with a controller. If you got it second hand, you got jipped.

3

u/dannyocean7 1d ago

Wait, can I play Fortnite in PS5 with a mouse? 👀

2

u/HopefullyAGoodTrip 1d ago

Yep, my brother did that. Go for it!

1

u/dannyocean7 12h ago

Many thanks! Will try it out

5

u/k1intt 2d ago

But if you just got a PS5 for Xmas…. Why does this post have any meaning???

16

u/k1intt 2d ago

The PS comes with a controller…………..

-17

u/chilie 2d ago

Never lost anything eh?

14

u/Baruch_S 2d ago

You lost a whole controller?

-14

u/chilie 2d ago

Kids do.

13

u/Baruch_S 2d ago

Do they? I never lost any controllers as a kid.

16

u/k1intt 2d ago

Ah yes. Christmas Day.

You open up your brand new PlayStation 5 and the Dualsense yeets itself out the window.

And never to be seen again.

Something we all experience. My mistake.

-6

u/chilie 2d ago

The op never mentioned anything about a brand new ps5.

-4

u/Minuslee 2d ago

Who said anything about getting a PS5 for Christmas? 😆

0

u/k1intt 2d ago

Oh idk the date of the post????

-3

u/Minuslee 2d ago

That's just an assumption on your part lol. Op didn't mention getting it for Christmas. Obviously it's advice that can help someone if they're without a controller for whatever reason 🙄

2

u/k1intt 2d ago

They could also use the search function 🎄🎅🏻

2

u/CressDependent2918 2d ago

I just wish it works on games also. Like d4 and poe2, so far the only game i play that has mouse and kb support is ff14

2

u/harris235 1d ago

My brother plays fortnite with a kbm on his ps5. There's a post in this sub with a whole list of games that support it.

1

u/theeyesofryan 1d ago

I’ve played planet coaster that way, no idea what else is supported

1

u/curtydc 2d ago

Your regular TV remote probably works too. I've got a 6 year old Vizio TV, and the remote that came with the TV can navigate through the PS5 menus, as well as in-game menus.

1

u/Welfi1988 2d ago

You can also connect a mouse and play with m/k

1

u/alcopandada 2d ago

Strangely not every keyboard connects on BT. My Nuphy air can’t connect (“device is not supported”). Keychron connects just fine.

1

u/sswishbone 2d ago

If games properly supported it, I'd do this way more often. Download a demo for any modern survival horror (RE4 Remake, Dead Space,  Silent Hill 2) on PC and aim with the mouse... it completely transforms the experience

1

u/El_Jefe-o7 1d ago

The PS home button om keyboard is pause break it makes changing songs on the fly while playing soooo much easier on KB+M

1

u/nolifebr 1d ago

Used to play a lot of games with mouse and keyboard on the PS5. Learned after years that the print-screen key works as a shortcut to the Create tab (where you save your videos/screenshots and so on).

1

u/Turtles96 1d ago

it not come with a controller in the box??

1

u/ALF839 1d ago

You can play a few, non competitive, games (like minecraft) with mouse and keyboard by simply plugging them into the USB ports.

1

u/PhantomPain0_0 1d ago

I don’t even use keyboard on my gaming pc you want me to use it on ps5 lol ( I know what you meant but fuck keyboards )

1

u/Anayalater5963 1d ago

Oh but when I make a post about a general hardware topic I get my post removed

1

u/Shinbo999 1d ago

Hell, you can even play games with KBM ! Warzone supports it

u/Phrozenstare 4h ago

cool story bro 🙄

1

u/zamardii12 2d ago

This is confusing to me. Op do you have a PS5 with no controller at all for it?

3

u/a_talking_face 2d ago

I suppose they could have bought it second hand.

1

u/QuietJackal 2d ago

Yeah, I have a comment from something like 5 years ago that has some of the keyboard equivalent to button shortcuts and to this day I still get a random reply on it every few months.

1

u/HopefullyAGoodTrip 2d ago

Any for home menu? I need that so fucking bad.

2

u/QuietJackal 2d ago

Pause break if you tap brings up the quick menu, holding it takes you to the home screen.

0

u/hateful100 2d ago

I know a wireless mouse and keyboard set with multi device that works an absolute great on my ps5.

I use it with my pc too and then just change the input to my mouse and keyboard if I ever need to type or I play something like war frame that supports mouse and keyboard :)

0

u/the_ultracheeser 2d ago

Which one? I'm also looking for a wireless keyboard for Warframe.

0

u/Cthulhu8762 2d ago

Yep I do this but play a handful of games that support it granted I wish more did

0

u/Specialist-Tea-5049 2d ago

Do you use your (can you use any) PC mouse and keyboard, or does it have to be PS specific?

0

u/HopefullyAGoodTrip 2d ago

Any, wired works best (bluetoofh may have issues)

Note: you cannot use home button with mouse/keyboard, so you'll need to turn the console on and off when you're done using an app or want to switch...yeah...that's been annoying.

1

u/Specialist-Tea-5049 2d ago

Okay nice, thanks for the info

0

u/InsaneTurtle 1d ago

If you have a Sony TV, the remote control works as well.

2

u/Whiteshadows86 1d ago

Not just a Sony TV, it can be any TV if you enable HDMI-CEC.

-2

u/Glum_Hospital_4103 1d ago

It's almost like Google exists and more people should use it.

-2

u/2old4ZisShit 1d ago

Or ... And hear me out...use the tv remote ?

2

u/HopefullyAGoodTrip 1d ago

Or...and hear me out...instead of being a smart ass maybe consider not all smart TV remotes work Einstein. My roku remote does jack shit for me
