From the article: With information leaked via ryokutya2089, Hashino comments on a setting he would like to tackle in the future, as well as the potential of a sequel for Metaphor: ReFantazio.

-If I decide that the best setting for a future title is the Sengoku period, it might turn into a JRPG with a world like the Basara series (laughs).
-There are no concrete plans to make Metaphor into a series….
-I do hope it can become a series one day.
-Since the project started with the goal of creating a third JRPG series alongside Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, I’d like to develop it into a flagship title that represents our company.

I think if they said they have concrete plans, that’s more committal to a sequel being in development right now than say “yeah we hope to make a sequel one day”
