Playstation3 Graphic Crash
This morning I played through a game and then it crashed. After shutting the system down and restarting it again it happened like 30mins in (the Photo above) and after that again.
Any ideas what could be the issue? Yesterday it worked just fine for like 12 hours.

GPU issue?

He's got a slim, so it isn't the usual 90nm shenanigans.

Some slims have been starting to fail as well, but at least in their cases it can be old age. Had a few of them die on me as well, 2504s. Fortunately none of much importance as their RSX steppings were A1GB.
I do remember there was a quite huge influx of dying slims on this sub at one point so...

What makes the stepping so important? Can't find anything definitive online about it. Same with information on the bin an RSX is from.

Overclocking. CGB is the 2nd good stepping with GGB being the "golden" one. I'd assume binning also plays a good role here but I've yet to dive in that deep. Best assumption I can think of is that the binning tells you if the GGB can do 1GHz without crashing.

Interesting, I've never bothered to experiment with overclocking, has any advancement been made in undervolting the 90nm, for cooler temperatures with the same performance?
Also do you have a good resource for differences between RSX steppings to satisfy my curiosity?

The 90 can't OC much I'm afraid - all the steppings I listed are for the 90. As for more OC stuff, check out u/MitsuTM's posts, as well as RIP-Felix' guide for overclocking.
I'm also saving up to frankie my A01 in hopes of overclocking. The one 40nm I have around is one of the 3000 series, which I'm not sure if anyone OC'd as of yet.
(unless I live under a boulder and several people w/ Frankies did it already.)
And last but not least, the most extensive and in-depth resource about it. I picked the link off one of Mitsu's posts but you can take it from page 1 to present.
I also currently own a overclocked slim which, thank god, hasn't died. 5300GGB, 900/950 overclock.
EDIT: My bad, I missed the undervolt part. As it currently stands 1.16 is the lowest I could go stable with OG TOKIN still onboard, both CELL and RSX wise. I have yet to test tantalums but unless I'm misremembering, I think u/Sampsonay got it stable at lower than me. 65s go as low as 0.98-0.96 from my own console (CECHK04, lowered down to 0.98 CELL and 0.96 RSX stable) and 40nm slims will lower to some silly numbers. (the table goes as low as 0.82 I think, someone here got it lower than even that.)

Wow, the performance is actually pretty impressive for MGS4 and DS2, maybe I'll overclock my slim, of course that just means I have to juggle saves around ANOTHER system (I have way too many) but I should check what GPU stepping it has and let you know, it's a 2501 that I found on 3.41, so I can jailbreak right away and overclock too.
And in regards to the Frankenstein mod, I'm actually in the process of trying to do it myself, I just need to reball the donor 65nm chip and install it to the system, hopefully it works after everything I've done to it.

Yeah i got a 40nm RSX stable at 0.82V at stock clock speeds but of course not all of them can do that reliably. I had another which initially worked that low, then ended up being unstable the next day.

My other guess was overheating cause it only happens after a bit of playing but idk

Your console's GPU is dying. I would recommend getting a new console and backing up any important data from this one before it stops turning on at all.

She’s beautiful but she’s dying.
