IDK why but Ju Peters worm design is absolutely intriguing to me. Nusjuro's is the best but Ju Peter seems very devoid of humanity.... something about the huge set of teeth that is off throwing.

u/Behanort Mar 15 '24

hes also the only one whos NOT a yokai... Ju Peter continues to be the odd one out for some reason

u/ThankGodForYouSon Mar 15 '24

Gandhi also stands out from his colour to lack of flesh surrounding him.

395

u/IRefuseThisNonsense Mar 15 '24

I don't see enough people mention it, so I am gonna. When we see him transform we see that the flesh and muscle regrows onto his face and torso as he changes. That's gonna look so messed up when animated.

Recreation/upgrade of that poster art where Eren stared up at the Colossal Titan but it's Luffy and the 5 Elders.

u/S1lver_Smurfer Mar 15 '24

DUU-DU-DU DUU-DU DUU-DU-DUH

7

u/Glaedr24 Mar 15 '24

attack on titan vibes fr

3

u/Doomroar Mar 16 '24

Henry Thurlow better start fighting tooth and nail to get that scene for him, because he is all about gross gory scenes and we hardly get any of those

It is good that it is a short one, so if he starts early we are guaranteed to eat good, and it has to be him, this is the perfect excuse to go full Shigurui on us

82

u/ScrapeWithFire Mar 15 '24

Jupiter is the biggest planet and the Roman equivalent to Zeus, so if there was going to be a "special" elder it would definitely be him

33

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '24

Exact, also intriguing since among MOST religions there's sky father figure, usually a thunder god, and the motiff of them fighting and defeating a giant serpent, (Zeus, Perun, Indra and many more.) But interestingly when a thunder god was present in OP, the serpent was one of the good guys.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '24

Thor is another obvious one. It's most likely to do with Proto-Indo-European mythology since the religion share way more similarities than by random chance

4

u/cjamesfort God Usopp Mar 16 '24

He's also St Peter, who was the first Pope and was executed under Roman emperor Nero. There could be some similarities between Nika/Jesus and Nerona/Nero.

-2

u/Secretly_a_BushDog Mar 16 '24

Well he's dead now. We saw him get decapitated

9

u/Throwawayalt129 Mar 16 '24

Respectfully, there's no way in hell one of the Five Elders dies to something that simple. He's too plot important to die that quick after revealing his DF.

-2

u/Secretly_a_BushDog Mar 16 '24

He got decapitated on page

6

u/Acceptable-Record469 Mar 16 '24

He’s not bruh. We’ll see this dude next chapter and people will scream “fake out death.” But there was no way in hell that he died from that attack

3

u/Frednd21 Mar 17 '24

its not even fake out death this time. Saturn was shown regenerating and probably so can the other elders

5

u/Redzephyr01 Mar 16 '24

Worms can regenerate from being cut in half. It wouldn't be out of the question for a sandworm to also be able to do that.

5

u/ChickenSkinMan Mar 16 '24

A lot of worm species can survive being cut in half. Wouldn't surprise me if he did too

2

u/Frednd21 Mar 17 '24

Have you been reading the last chapters?

Saturn can regenerate from wounds and most likely so can the other elders

111

u/buffalo4293 Mar 15 '24

He is Shai Halud

Digging the One Piece x Dune crossover

u/Dionysus_8 Mar 15 '24

Joy boy is essentially lisan al ghaib

Digging

Much like Shai-Hulud, the eternal

edit: you cannot downvote that which is eternal

2

u/clifbarczar Mar 16 '24

Perfect. Both Dune and One Piece are peaking right now.

103

u/DeismAccountant Mar 15 '24

Yeah I’m definitely wondering why that is myself. I’m guessing they’re more than just Yokai and have cultural parallels in other cultures?

For example, the Venus-Bakotsu seems to parallel the Celtic Kelpie.

5

u/nick2473got Mar 16 '24

Well the boar (Warcury) is from Chinese myth. But Itsumade, Gyuki, and Bakotsu are all Japanese. So 3 out of 5 are yokai.

4

u/kick_his_ass_sebas Mar 16 '24

I mean Nika is made up. The sky is the limit with God like beings here

28

u/ihiam Mar 15 '24

Warcury isn't a japanese yokai either. Hoki is apparently a chinese thing.

23

u/SpiritualScumlord Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Mar 15 '24

The boar is derived from Chinese legend, so there are 2 who are not yokai.

3

u/mrkrazy12345 Mar 15 '24

Do you know what legend? I know it says it’s Chinese in the end of chapter notes, but googling “Chinese folklore Hoki” isn’t turning up much. Even the Bakotsu is hard to find info on besides its appearance in the chapter.

10

u/zjmhy Mar 15 '24 edited Mar 15 '24

That's because it's not read as Houki in Chinese, it's read as Feng Xi. The languages may use the same characters but they're pronounced differently.

5

u/mrkrazy12345 Mar 15 '24

I saw a couple other comments saying the same thing so that makes way more sense now. I love how everyone was coming up with theories that had consistent themes, then here comes Oda making them 3 yokai, a Chinese demon, and then a dune sandworm.

4

u/SpiritualScumlord Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Mar 15 '24

I'm glad someone else knew cuz I had no fucking idea hahaha. I just read the notes at the end of the chapter and prayed someone in the comments knew more than me lol

63

u/Jonny_the_Rocket Mar 15 '24

The theorists who believe in the existence of a traitor among the Gorosei are rubbing their hands

17

u/Allifeur Mar 15 '24

It's also interesting that he's the only one who can use his power to go underground, it makes him the best to act in secrecy. I still hope he's been involved in some past events, like digging a giant cavity under Jaya to cause the Knock-up stream, or creating whirlpools when necessary.

12

u/Khione_Asteri Mar 15 '24

warcury isnt a yokai either

3

u/Solo_Jawn Mar 15 '24

Oda just really liked Dune

10

u/echolog Mar 15 '24

He's also #1 according to the summon circles.

5

u/thedrq Mar 15 '24

what are the other things?

23

u/Behanort Mar 15 '24

Obviously, hes the youngest of them for some reason, and now hes the only one who doesnt fit the motif of gorosei powers

People have been speculating that he might be... a lot of things: the first follower of Imu cuz his name is Shepard Ju Peter, and him being clearly younger then other elders might point to him receiving immortality first, and also, that he might betray Imu just like Apostole Peter betrayed Jesus

15

u/glitchpoke Mar 15 '24

he's also the only one who's design seems to not be based on a historical figure (Garibaldi for Saturn, Ghandi for Venus, Gorbachev for Warcury, Japanese historical figure who's name I can't remember for Mars)

8

u/Duxtrix Mar 15 '24

Also indicating him being the first follower is Saturn through Nesjuro have numbers 5-2 on their summoning circles, leaving Peter to be 1

3

u/thedrq Mar 15 '24

I see, yes i was aware he was the youngest, just wondering if there were other stuff lol

1

u/No32 Mar 16 '24

that he might betray Imu just like Apostole Peter betrayed Jesus

That doesn't quite fit since Peter denied knowing Jesus three times, but didn't full out betray him like Judas did

4

u/winddagger7 Mar 15 '24

It's an Alaskan Bull Worm!

3

u/Joxelo Mar 15 '24

Not actually, as the boar is from Chinese folk lore. It’s interesting that it’s the only one that isn’t from traditional mythology tho

3

u/Holygamer99 Mar 15 '24

It’s a really weird coincidence this was revealed around the time Dune 2 came out.

2

u/Vana-Freya Cipher Pol Mar 15 '24

an odd opponent? let sanji handle him. i mean he’s sanji’s fake father 😭

2

u/ThisHatRightHere Mar 15 '24

There had to have been an original member out of the 5 of them that he replaced. Maybe Imu was their leader but after ascending into whatever they are now a newer member was chosen for the Gorosei.

2

u/Willythechilly Mar 15 '24

He always stood out to be just due to all the other Gorosei being rather old men but he seemed much younger and(dare i say it) more handsome

2

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '24 edited Mar 15 '24

Oda trying to be inclusive and incorporate other cultures into the five elders and their monster forms. However, I don't know if it's intentional that the only white looking guy also happens to be a "Sand Wyrm" which i assume have more western cultural relevance.

Also, from the chapter notes Topman Warcury (Hokai) seems to not be a yokai as well but a boar from chinese folklore/culture.

2

u/leoplanelles Pirate Mar 15 '24

This is added to the « he’s somehow a traitor » theory

1

u/HulklingsBoyfriend Mar 15 '24

I haven't been able to find any Japanese source on bakotsu (hakkotsu no uma) or hoki/houki myself. They could be originals as well.

1

u/kerempengkeren Mar 15 '24

Considering he's also the youngest looking, my theory is that he's a "new" Gorosei, replacing one of the OG who was killed by "someone".

1

u/Bossmann1017 Mar 15 '24

Yeah him being the youngest of the Gorosei and him not being a yokai definitely hints to him being "different"

1

u/xHindemith Mar 16 '24

Technically neither is Warcury since a hōki is not a youkai but comes from chinese folklore

1

u/Pinguinmeister Mar 16 '24

Welcome to Dune.

1

u/BaroquesCafe Mar 16 '24

Yokai are more ancient, while the sand wyrm is from more recent lore and stories (think Dune). I wonder if it’s to symbolize the age difference between he and the other elders

1

u/butterfingahs Mar 16 '24

The boar is from Chinese mythology so they're not all based on yokai, just 3 of them.

1

u/SauronGortaur01 Mar 16 '24

I like to think he was also supposed to be a Yokai but Oda saw Dune / Dune2 and was like: Shai Hulud it is.

1

u/DisneyPandora Mar 16 '24

He literally looks like the Giant Whale friend of Brook

11

u/BitzahDustoo Mar 15 '24

because it looks like laboon for some reasonn with the scarr

9

14

u/hunglow13 Pirate Mar 15 '24

Ju Peter is just a wannabe Shai-Hulud

5

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Mar 15 '24

Certainly brings that to mind, especially with the recent movie, but dune wasn’t the first story to come up with giant worms. Could be a reference to all sorts of things.

3

u/Nitro114 Void Month Survivor Mar 15 '24

obviously.

6

u/Idostuff2010 Void Month Survivor Mar 15 '24

I think its the eyes. Everyone else has bestial / demon eyes. And the worm's is just devoid of life

5

u/SpudBoy9001 Mar 15 '24

Oda watched Dune

5

u/ShawJaw Mar 15 '24

Shai-Hulud!

11

u/tryingmydarnest Mar 15 '24

something about the huge set of teeth that is off throwing

Uncanny Valley? Almost human like (as compared to good old fangs) but definitely not human

2

u/MasterStannisSupreme Mar 15 '24

reminded me of Bawabawa from Bleach lmao

3

u/Just_Possibility125 God Usopp Mar 15 '24

I swear bro would've been the most eerie and evil looking if he was in any other manga. But in one piece... Well He actually looks really cartoonishly evil here lol.

2

u/imteamcaptain Mar 15 '24

He reminds me of Griffith from Berkserk wearing his helmet.

1

u/rsatrioadi Explorer Mar 15 '24

Alaskan Bull Worm.

1

u/MtnDude2088 Mar 15 '24

I love his design, its pretty spooky for one piece. He really reminds me of the count from Berserk. The Count

1

u/Ganmorg Mar 15 '24

He reminds me of the SMT rendition of Niddhohgr, the dragon that chews on the roots of yggdrasil. I think that’s why he gets bisected by Dorry and Broggy, what with them being Vikings

1

u/Cynergyy Mar 15 '24

reminds me of Setekh Wenut from genshin. I'd get the hell out of there as fast as possible too if I have to fight that annoying boss

1

u/ArcadianBlueRogue Void Month Survivor Mar 15 '24

Legit, I remember when the shadows were first scene on MJ and people had all these cool theories about the kinds of demons they were.

I don't remember a fucking Dune character being on anyone's list

He versing the Nika Al Gaib, it's over

0

u/Etonet Mar 15 '24

All the yokai choices are kinda strange, like why is there a sand worm from Dune lol. The skeletal horse seems to be a variant of Brooks' fruit?

3

u/Cheesemacher Mar 15 '24

The freezing thing is similar. But it's only a coincidence that Brook ended up as a skeleton.

0

u/Secretly_a_BushDog Mar 16 '24

Well he's dead now. We saw him get decapitated
