The payoff with Kuma’s character is actually insane. Oda spent a decade slowly building up the mystery of Kuma and then managed to stick the landing flawlessly. He made a super emotional flashback that both explained past mysteries, furthered the plot, and was an amazing standalone story that made Kuma and Bonney some of the greatest characters in the series

This gives me full confidence that Oda will nail the Void Century reveal. This flashback is the first time that we are getting definitive answers for one of One Piece’s overarching mysteries. So I have full faith that the other big overarching mysteries will be just as good

Oda spent a decade slowly building up the mystery of Kuma

Oh it's definitely been way more than a decade

  • Kuma first appearance: June 10, 2002

  • Kuma arrives on Thriller Bark: October 1, 2007

  • Kuma appears before the SHs on Sabaody: September 1, 2008

Also set the stakes for the reader that the Celestial Dragons and the upper echelon of the World Government cannot be redeemed. They cannot be reasoned with or parleyed against.

Imu, the Gorosei, the CDs. They all need to fucking go.

flawlessly

Let's ignore the fact that kuma could've escaped with bonney in Saobody shall we.

Yea nothing like running away from the largest most powerful organization on the planet trying to keep your 10yr old daughter safe who with 1 fuckup can end up getting killed.

Flawless plan genius.

One of the Gorosei was incredibly invested in Kuma personally. Trying to double cross him would just be a stupid move. He wants to keep Bonney safe, not put her in the crosshairs of the most powerful man in the world for the rest of her life

Also a big portion of the flashback is dedicated to explaining that Kuma wants to pay back his debt. He accepted his fate to never see Bonney again as a condition for saving her. He is a guy who takes the everyone’s pain head on. He doesn’t look for ways to avoid his responsibility. That is shown in literally every single chapter of the flashback. The fact that he is honorable and is self sacrificing is the entire basis of his character

Take a hike

I don't have mountains in my area to hike over tho. How is this relevant to what I said?

u/KaizokuoDLuffy Dec 21 '23

Take a hike to wherever there are mountains. It will be relevant in the sense that nobody has to hear what you think.

So basically no one wants to hear criticisms about one piece and want to shut their ears when you hear someone slander one piece?

You know you can still enjoy one piece while acknowledging it has flaws in its writing right?

You are wrong. All I want is for you to take a hike.

I am right. I will not take a hike.

No flaw. We established kuma aß smart, strong and kind. If there was a better way, he would have done it.

Communicating cant only be done through text and pictures, context and an already established character communicate things aswell that werent shown or written.

And then be chased by the world government and be on the run their whole life?

Oh and let's see what else. How about a buster call on Sorbet Kingdom? How about killing off Vegapunk? How about imprisoning or executing anyone who help them? Who's to say Saturn won't hunt them down personally or call the God knights on them? And do you really think Saturn didn't make Vegapunk build in some sort of tracking device into Kuma by now?

Oda is goated at flashbacks/ backstories. I normally hate them but in OP every single one is 10/10. He really takes a character and manages to make them so real
