Travel advice Bilferie tips?

So I got me one of them fancy electric cars and I am dying to take it out for a trip around Norway. We currently live around 30-ish minutes from Oslo and I m thinking of driving up to Trondheim to visit a cousin who studies there and then come down through the coast.

I got a mattress designed specifically for the car, an outdoor gas burner, outdoor lighting etc, this is the plan-ish:

  • The trip will happen around 17-May (before the high season starts)
  • It should take around 7 days
  • We will sleep in the car and maybe visit a camping site to shower in between
  • We will make our cooking outdoors and visit restaurants in between if we find interesting and reasonably priced options

I am wondering if any of you have taken similar trips around Norway and have any tips for me? For example where to park the car overnight? What are the must see places? Where to eat good and cheap? What is the nicest place to spend 17 mai in the area? Any must visit beaches in the coast?

Thank you for any tips

Moving Norwegian does not feel at home in Norway

This post comes with the best intentions, I do not intend to criticise Norway nor Norwegians, but would appreciate shared experiences or answers to my worries.

I'm norwegian but grew up in Italy. I've only visited Norway during the holidays to see my grandparents and the rest of my family. My parents never gave me language classes and they were very a-cultural during my childhood (as in they didn't tell us much about Norway, its history or culture). I'm currently studying in the UK but planning to move back to Norway in half a year once I finish my degree.

As much as I'm excited to finally live in Norway (the public libraries, the public transport, lovely summers), I am also very worried. From the few experiences I've had in Norway I've felt that people here can be detached and very independent (to the point where friendships are hard to make). I don't feel very comfortable in social settings and I find it difficult to relate to people (in Italy people are really open, sometimes a bit too much, but every country have their negatives and positives). I study Arabic and lived in Jordan and met many Arabic-speaking people, and I genuinely love the culture (the hospitality, the relaxedness in terms of timing, the friendliness). I also struggle with the drinking culture here and how much alcohol changes people, makes them more open and sometimes a bit too rowdy, only for them to return to point 0 the next day.

What hurts the most is that I am Norwegian, I speak the language and I know the country; however still feel like an outside in what is supposed to be my country.

Does anyone feel the same or share similar experiences?

Other IPS establishment deadline

Does anyone know if there's a deadline to establish an IPS to still get the tax benefit for this year (2024)?

I'm looking to open it with Nordnet or Kron but I can't find anything about it. The only information I get about a deadline is on SpareBank.

A bus came off the road in bad weather on the E10 into/out of Lofoten. There are deaths unfortunately and many injured. Take care driving in this weather and I don't know if the road is open yet as there are many emergency vehicles so look at live traffic maps before heading out

Travel advice Car Hire In Norway

Hi guys, just after some advice on car rentals and travelling in Norway.

Me and my partner are looking to travel through Scandinavia in October 2025 starting in Oslo. We’re both Australian and by the time we plan to travel my partner will be 23 with an Australian Green P’s license, a couple months off of getting his open license.

I can only see online that the restrictions are ‘you must have a drivers license valid for one year or more’. As my partner is on a provisional license but has had it for more than a year, will this affect our chances of hiring a car for three weeks while we travel or will we just have to pay more in car hire costs due to the provisional license? We plan to hire for three weeks and travel from Norway to Finland.

Thanks in advance and any advice is appreciated!

Travel advice Tips for my 6 months in Norway

Hei hei! I’m an exchange student from New Zealand, moving to Bergen on January 1st to study at UiB for six months. After that, I’ll have 1–2 months to travel around Europe or explore more of Norway.

I love the outdoors hiking, skiing, kayaking, diving, surfing—pretty much anything in nature which is what has draw me to this amaizng country! I’d love to hear your must-dos for making the most of my 6–7 months in Norway. What are the best times to visit certain regions, and when should I plan specific activities? I’m also trying to keep things relatively budget-friendly (though I know Norway can be a bit tricky for that!).

So far, I’m thinking of heading north to Tromsø in January or February to chase the Northern Lights, try dog sledding, and maybe spot some whales. For free weekends in the winter, I’d like to explore ski touring around Bergen or Voss. That’s about as far as I’ve planned—I’d love to see and do it all, but I know that’s not realistic, so I want to organize my time as best I can. A road trip with a car or van would also be amazing, though I’ll probably need to make some friends in Norway first to make that happen!

On top of exploring Norway, I’m also hoping to visit other European countries during my break. If you have tips on budget-friendly travel options, must-visit destinations, or the best ways to travel from Norway, I’d love to hear them.

As you can probably tell, I’m very excited and just want to make the most of my time here. Any advice would mean so much. Tusen takk! 😊

Other Finding Family Heritage

Hello I am a Canadian of Norwegian decent. Recently I have gotten my daughter involved in a cultural centre in our province and it got me digging into my family history. I want to connect with whoever my distant family may be if my family and I visit Norway in the coming years.

I found a distant relative (lives in another province) who visited distant family who still live in Norway.

After some emails she unfortunately can’t seem to remember who they are (she is very old) but found a journal of her visit with some addresses in it however the trip was about 38 years ago….

Once she mails me the journal how can I go about contacting the addresses or finding records of who lived there ?

Any help is appreciated.

TL;DR: I’m a Canadian of Norwegian descent looking to reconnect with distant family in Norway. A relative found a 38-year-old journal with old addresses from her visit to family there. Once I get the journal, how can I find out who lived at those addresses or contact them today? Any tips for researching Norwegian ancestry or connecting with distant relatives would be appreciated!

Working in Norway Best way to deal with a noisy neighbor?

I live in an apartment owned by the company I work for. The upstairs neighbor seems to host a party pretty much every weekend and it goes on until 2 or 3 AM and once to 5 AM. The weeks he doesn't party, there are children shouting, stomping around and slamming things instead. Part of the problem is that the sound insulation doesn't seem to be that great, but hard to imagine that he doesn't realize this. Aside from difficulty sleeping, I can hardly watch television because it gets drowned out by their music. Have not brought it up as I am trying to live and let live, but am tired of this. Should I just wear headphones all the time? Thanks!

Language I've been learning Norwegian for the past few weeks and would just like to say Norsk er et vakkert språk.

For context, I'm American but I still speak the language from my old country and I've studied Spanish in college. I also studied French in high-school.

I'm enjoying Norwegian much more than any of the aforementioned languages.

Food Recommendations?

Post image
3 Upvotes

So I got married to my wife and moved here to Norway from America. There’s obviously differences in food and what is available here. Since it’s not something my wife really eats she doesn’t even know what to recommend. So I’m looking for some recommendations on chicken top ramen like in the picture. That’s the brand I ate at home and just looking for a “comfort” food. Thank you for any suggestions.

Travel advice Tromso and Lofoten itinerary

I will be spending eight days in Northern Norway in Summer 2025. I would like people’s feedback on my tentative itinerary. I’m flying into Tromso on 14 June and flying out of Narvik on 22 June.

14 June: Tromso 15 June: Senja 16 June: Senja 17 June: ? 18 June: ? 19 June: Reine 20 June: Reine 21 June: Narvik

Where do you suggest we spend the night of 17 and 18 June? Andenes? Sortland? Svolvaer? Henningsvaer? Leknes? Somewhere else? Should we reduce one night in Reine?

Travel advice What time slot to choose for train from Bergen to Oslo

Hey guys, I am planning on visiting Bergen and the surrounding area in mid-January. Not even sure if it's a good time, but I just want to see it in person.

I live in Riga, and it gets dark here at about 4pm, so I imagine it gets dark much sooner up there. I'm planning on staying in Bergen for 2–3 days and then spend a day in Oslo but travel to Oslo by train for the scenery. They've got trains running from early morning to nearly midnight, so what would be a time slot that permits the most daylight.

Thank you!

Travel advice Suggestions for winter stay around Bergen

Hello!

My girlfriend and I have decided to go to Norway for new years' eve this year. After some research, we decided to spend 2 days in Oslo and then head to Bergen for NYE. We have found some posts here on reddit saying that we should expect spectacular fireworks and a nice atmosphere in general, so we got excited.

We are looking for general recommendations on activities and restaurants/bars for the days we are spending in Norway, especially in the area of Bergen. In our bucket list we have:

1) Fjord cruise by boat (any suggestion on a particular company?)

2) Walking tour around the city and the markets

3) Hikes on the hills surrounding the city for a nice view

4) Day trip to fjords (should we rent a car?)

I am a hobbyist photographer so I would like to get some nice angles for some landscapes around the area. And, even though I know we are not north enough, some northern lights if we are lucky (fingers crossed).

In general do you think it would be worth to rent a car to move outside of the city? I did a 10 days road trip in Iceland during winter last year, so I have an idea on how to drive on icy roads (not super expert, though). Any particular area to visit around Bergen that needs to be reached by car?

Thank you all in advance!
