Highland Park is good. But almost every LA neighborhood is "block by block" good or bad. You need to be there and see for yourself. And if you're evaluating an apartment, go there at night.

My sister lives there and has for decades. In the 1990s, she was the only non Latino in the neighborhood, but she was never robbed, nor did she feel unsafe. In recent years, the area has really gentrified and lots of young couples and young families. York Blvd., which was a no-man's land, today kinda reminds me of Melrose Blvd in the 80s. Young, hip and fun. But I agree, go and check it out for yourself.

It's expensive these days so if you can afford it good for you. The biggest problem you're going to have in any neighborhood in Los Angeles is your car being broken into (especially if you have to park on the street). If you look at the crime stats, this happens a lot more near (a block in either direction) of the major streets in the area (York, Fig, Monterrey, Huntington)

It's a good area! Thick with Los Angeles culture. There are some old time gangs there that are pretty harmless unless you are walking around looking like a gang banger. There's also a lot of gentrification and new stores with great products popping up. It's really a diverse and interesting area. My favorite taco place in all of Los Angeles villas tacos is there.

That particular section of highland park feels kinda secluded since it’s down the hill from Figueroa, so it will feel a little quieter than some other sections of the neighborhood. Make sure you can tolerate freeway noise and the train running on the bridge over the freeway, both are in close proximity to everything you have highlighted.

It’s ok. El Sereno is safe just old. Highland Park has gotten better. You should go there for at least a couple weeks before moving. There are more realities of living in LA that you’ll need to see yourself.

It’s great if you can deal with the fact there’s literally stop signs to get on the 110. Still one of the craziest design quirks of LA, turns out highways designed when little cars maxed out at 40mph are terrifying when you’re dealing with 80mph cars twice the size
