Last week was rough in my household. A death in the family has left me rattled, and longing for companionship I once took for granted.

First, a little backstory.

During the early 2000s there was a void in my life. I needed a more pleasing tactile typing experience. I knew I sought after something, but didn't know what. After some research, I found the Keytronic Designer-P2 keyboard. This thing was glorious. Keys provided a nice feeling when depressed. Weighted differently depending on the frequency of use, the keys felt like they had a purpose. Rock solid construction, this keyboard was the cream of the membrane-keyboard crop. I loved this thing. I went through 4 of them before I saw the mechanical light.

In early 2012 I made a decision that would greatly impact my life; greatly improving performance both in my work life and my personal life.

That's right- I purchased a mechanical keyboard.

Growing up it's easy to overlook the great things we have in life. Fewer responsibilities, a carefree attitude, IBM Model-M Keyboards being in that office where the households' word processor is kept. The things we take for granted. I always knew I liked loud feedback while typing. I crave the confirmation of "Yes, that key has been pressed" and "yes, you meant that key and no other." I want the person in the next room to know that my typing is with purpose!

Enter: the 2012 Razer Blackwidow Elite with MX Cherry Blues.

What a work of art. This was before the current mechanical craze really took off. The crisp, clean, crunch of a key being pressed. Music to my ears! My actions per minute? Through the roof! Words per minute? Climbing! Faster and faster I typed. Do my fingers have a limit? Surely they must, but this keyboard will take my presses in stride, confidently spewing out whatever I could throw at it. The gentle blue glow reminding me at the end of the day that tomorrow is neigh, and many more key presses await.

A model of productivity, my 2012 Razer Blackwidow Elite with Cherry MX Blues and I grew closer. There was no challenge we couldn't tackle. The keyboard began finishing my sentences. The spacebar always on the brink of a satisfactory "crunch," teetering between this word and the next.

And then it happened. Sorry, I need a minute to collect my thoughts.

...

Yes, it happened. My wife. My sweet, dear wife. She truly is amazing, and I feel lucky to have her. BUT, my wife.

Cleaning up some miscellaneous Christmas decorations from around the house, the mood was high. A bottle of wine, some good music, a perfect 2012 Razer Blackwidow Elite with Cherry MX Blues. All was right with the world. But then IT happened.

My wife bumped- no, SLAMMED, into my desk by accident. She's clumsy and accident prone, nothing new here. Except this time there was a glass of water sitting, awaiting my return to the Razer. A pint glass, filled two thirds from the top. 10 ounces of cold water. Boom, onto the keyboard. From the other room I hear a frantic "oh no!" She knew what she had done. Mortified, she utters the words "Umm... Bisco? I uhh, spilt water on your keyboard!"

Racing to my desk, I couldn't believe my ears. "You spilt water on MY keyboard? -MY- keyboard?!? What? How?" I come into the room to see her visibly shaken, frozen in shock. In her panic, she couldn't even react. I get to the computer and rip the USB cable out of the back in a vain effort to save my lovely 2012 Razer Blackwidow Elite with Cherry MX Blues' life. Somehow, I knew it was too late. I had lost most of my non-mechanical keyboards to similar fates.

After following the drying protocol and trying the keyboard again later, my deepest fear was confirmed. My precious, discontinued, 2012 Razer Blackwidow Elite with Cherry MX Blues was dead. The blue backlight faintly glowing, begging me to try one more time. Just one more try. It was futile, the damage had been done.

My wife was horrified. She was actually more upset than I was, knowing how much I loved the keyboard. The event was an accident after all, I couldn't be upset at her. I told her I could order another, it was no problem. This wasn't good enough for my sweet wife however, she insisted we go to Best Buy right away and fix this problem.

We make it to the store just in time, 10 minutes before they close. She leads the charge, rushing back to the "gaming" keyboard section. I knew the situation before we were even back there. They do carry mechanical keyboards, which is somewhat miraculous by itself. They just... aren't the same. Razer has a couple to pick from, with their own non-Cherry proprietary switches. I try to Blackwidow with "Razer Greens." Meh, it's just not the same. A few other brands with tacky designs and non-Cherry MX Blue switches are around. I'm sure at least one of these models is nice, but they're just not for me. My glorious 2012 Razer Blackwidow Elite with Cherry MX Blues was perfect... minimalist appearance. Blue backlight. No frivolous multi-media buttons or loud logos. She's pressing me, the store is closing. I've come to like the look of RGB backlighting, and Razer has one there, the Chroma. I press the keys in an attempt to dissuade myself. It didn't work.

The impulse took control, and I went home with a Razer Chroma RGB whateverness. An hour after setting it up, I knew it wasn't for me. The switches are... ok, I guess. They are definitely better than a membrane keyboard, don't get me wrong. But they aren't my Cherry MX Blues. Using this new keyboard, I immediately hit the appropriate channels. New egg, Amazon, mechanicalkeyboards.com, WASD Keyboards.

I knew that I would find the right keyboard, somehow.

Turns out, not many people make minimalist backlit keyboards with Cherry MX Blues. The ones I could choose from had a tendency to be either sold out or on back order. I just couldn't find the right board for me.

Enter the WASD Code Keyboard. There are a couple of different configurations. The MX clear switches get rave reviews, but I knew they wouldn't be right. I seek a crispity-crunchity tactile CLACK. I notice they have a newer model, with Cherry MX Greens. This is another obscure switch type, like the clears, so I did some research. As it happens, these are exactly like my beloved blues, only slightly firmer. Sounds perfect! The keys come pre-fitted with sound-dampening o-rings, but I thought I'd try it anyway. I will probably end up removing the rings, but who cares? This keyboard looks perfect for me in every way.

So I place my order, noticing WASD has their own shop on Amazon (fulfilled by Amazon). 10 left in stock, perfect! Free shipping says it'll be here in a week, longer than I want but whatever, I just want my keyboard.

It has now been a week. WASD Keyboards still hasn't even shipped my keyboard! I notice that now the model I ordered is out of stock, but it wasn't when I ordered it so surely they have mine right?

I am typing this long-winded wall of text on a cheap $5 Logitech membrane keyboard, and it's killing me. My wife liked the RGB Chroma well enough to decide she'd keep it, and I am using her old keyboard for now. I figure going back to membrane after years on mechanical will only make my WASD Code that much sweeter. BUT THEY HAVE TO FUCKING SHIP IT FIRST.

I just needed an avenue to vent my frustrations. PLEASE SHIP THE KEYBOARD. I don't understand how something in stock and fulfilled by amazon can possibly take this long to ship. My frustration grows. If you read all this... wow. Sorry it got a bit long winded!

tl;dr - my wife brutally murdered my 2012 Razer Blackwidow Elite with Cherry MX Blues, tried (in vain) to replace it with a modern Razer, hated it and ordered a WASD Code with Cherry MX Greens. Amazon hasn't shipped it yet.

If you happen to work for WASD Keyboards, please ship the fucking thing. It's an emergency.

This reminds me that I need to sell my CODE tenkeyless. The greens were too stiff for my taste.

I have Greens with my CM, and I love them. Actually, I'd like them stiffer. Funny how some think they're too stiff and others think they're too soft.

The feels.

6

u/erroneousdetails Jan 07 '15

My situation is not nearly this dramatic, but I know this feels. I only recently received my first Mech (A QFR with MX Blues) a few weeks ago, right before I went on vacation. Obviously, it was love at first cli-click. So crisp!

...two weeks pass: its time to go back to work. Here I am at my desk staring down this stock lenovo rubber dome keyboard, and it is almost painful to use. How did I type on this for years without complaint????!!!! Until I can afford to purchase a new board for work, I am going to start taking my QFR back and forth. I'm considering a WASD v2 with blues, browns, or clears. I just worry about the sound interfering with my co-workers.

3

u/biscodiscuits WASD Code w/ Cherry Greens Jan 07 '15

If noise would be an issue, sounds like browns would be the way to go. Granted, I've never tried them myself, but I hear good things.

Browns are great, I have them in my primary board (CM Storm Rapid TKL), but my work board is full on MX Blue (Rosewill RK9000)

Blues are the only way for work....show you clear superiority.

I save the quiet keys for the house. In case someone might be trying to sleep. HA!

3

u/nosjojo WASD Jan 08 '15

If you haven't already tossed it, you might be able to restore/mod it back into a working keyboard. The controller is probably the only thing that bit the dust inside. Keys would been to be cleaned and such, but water probably didn't destroy anything else.

6

u/biscodiscuits WASD Code w/ Cherry Greens Jan 08 '15

I would never toss it, how dare you?!

But seriously, this sounds interesting, and could be the first step towards fully expanding on this hobby. Got any good links?

5

u/nosjojo WASD Jan 08 '15

The difficulty will depend on your knowledge of electrical circuitry and such, as well as the construction of the keyboard.

For the most part though, switches don't really break from water contact. Depending on the material internally, they could corrode, rust, or give zero fucks. The most sensitive part inside will be the controller. If you have a multimeter, you can take the keyboard apart and test the keys individually and verify all the switches are still functional, diodes intact, etc. You won't be able to check the controller without a datasheet and a test circuit though.

Now, I don't know the internals of this particular keyboard, but you can probably take a controller like the Teensy and interface it with the existing keyboard and program it to work with that layout. If you google around you can find several homemade keyboards that use a Teensy. Even if they're weird layouts, the fundamentals are still the same.

Even if the controller can't be easily swapped directly, you should still have some working parts. The important thing to remember is that your keyboard is literally a bunch of switches. A homemade keyboard is just switches, diodes, wires, controller, and a case. The switches are the really expensive part. If all your switches still work, you can essentially build a new keyboard and attempt to reuse as much of that old keyboard as possible. It might be tough to get the backlighting carried over, but it can't hurt to try.

1

u/dardack Jan 08 '15

I sent you a PM about acquiring it.

If you don't want to get rid of it, you need to clean each key individually. Have to desolder each and every key I believe, take them apart, clean/dry, put back together.

As far as controller goes, you could either use the keys for a project, I'm not sure you could pick up a replacement for this keyboard. I know you can for RK-9000 and others. (controller that is)

u/notsocraz Poker II w/ clears and more! Jan 08 '15

I'm sorry for your loss.

u/gnubeardo Jan 08 '15

I have a Code with greens and a WASD with blues. Both with o-rings. I have the blues at home and the greens at work. The greens are significantly quieter than the blues. They have a drastically different feel, and I hope you enjoy both! With two full size keyboards now I think I'm going to venture in to 60% keyboards.

Also, that was a beautiful story.

2

u/bigtoepfer KBP V60 (Fukka)/CODE (Clears)/BW Ultimate (Blues) Jan 08 '15

I thought for the longest time that 60% was just silly. Now I'm to the point where I will be travelling more. I use my full keyboard for office work. My tenkeyless at home for gaming and such. It wouldn't be too far fetched to think I could keep a 60% in my bag for travelling with my laptop. The more I've been thinking about it the more I'm considering it. At first i thought I couldn't get past the lack of arrow keys. But I really think it's a moot point.

Of course I'm also thinking about going with a HHKB for the Topre to try somthing completely different. I'm still on the fence though.

1

u/gnubeardo Jan 08 '15

Yeah, I have a similar story. I love my numpad, but now I need a keyboard that I can carry around with my laptop and I think just a TKL will be too big.

You poor bastard. On the plus side, you can use this as a "win argument" button for the next year or two.

I tried o-rings on my Moda and hated them. The reds didn't do anything and the blues felt like rubber domes.

contact the seller through email first, then through Amazon...I will be doing that with my order next week if I don't get it by then

Worst case scenario, you get your money back and order from their site directly...

My girlfriend can't stand the sound of my blackwidow 2013 with mx Blues so I know when we move in together over summer I'm going to end up getting Browns. I'm not looking forward to that one aspect of living with her... Also she's clumsy so now I'm going to have nightmares of her ruining them. Damn it.

I ordered my code clear when they were being built. But they are typically fast to take care of service from the website.

I think that was the only part of the whole story that confused me. Why order from amazon when the website itself exists? At least that is what I'd have done in the beginning. Guaranteed to get quicker service I'd imagine.

1

I just assumed since the store on Amazon is WASD themselves, and the order is fulfilled by Amazon, I figured the shipping would be quick. You know, all the Amazon automation etc.

I have the tenkeyless Code with greens and I have to agree that the O-rings get rid of the annoying clack you get when the key hits the bottom plate but maintains the crisp click of the green switch. It's cathartic to hear.

1

u/RickyFromVegas Gateron Yellow Jan 08 '15

I once put o rings on my poker is clear [in attenpt] to achieve the same quietness I have on my g710+.

I hated the feeling so much, I spent the time to rid of all o rings. I feel better now, but my fiance hates it at night before she goes to sleep since I have my computer in the bedroom.

But then that Code doesn't light up blue either.

I even have a set of Nuclear Data Key Caps. I'd might be willing to part with it if you can't get your hands on that code.
