If you are posting a Review, Make sure you fully disclose any potential conflicts of interest such as whether you were sponsored for the product, received it for free, or sell similar products.

Guide posts should be novel to contribute to the community knowledge base - simple build / assembly videos should use photos flair, and reviews should use the review flair.

Oh my God you're still doing this! I was just thinking about your website the other day!

Hey all,

Another pair of weeks has came and went and there's another full length switch review to dive into. This week I take a look at Cherry's latest homage to the custom keyboard community's interests in the form of the Hirose Orange-inspired Cherry MX Orange switches. Hopefully these are at least a touch smoother than the vintage counterparts that they pay respects to...

As always, thank you all for the continued readership week in and out. As you'll see at the top of this review, I will be Chicago next weekend for 'That Windy City Keeb Meet' and I hope I'll get a chance to meet some of you in person there!

Cheers,

Goat

The funny thing to me is that it is quite literally only Reddit where this kind of sentiment occurs. I post on a half dozen other platforms and I've never received comments like this from any of them more than a handful of times, if ever.

Only this subreddit seems to have repeated issues with 100% free and ad-free content that has been structured the exact same way for 5 consecutive years. There are even 'frequent fliers' I see complain across months of reviews here like it's a hobby for them. To be fair, if it wasn't for the few kind comments here I probably wouldn't post on r/mechanicalkeyboards at all. No wonder new people complain about this place...

The sub calls anyone mentally ill for being able to afford a large collection. Yeah, this sub sucks lol. And it was definitely worse before. Though I’m happy enough to see genuinely interesting or wholesome posts here once in a while, including yours!

The GOAT again!

Where is the actual review? I know nothing about the switch after reading the article…just how many meet ups your planning on going to, that the Mx orange are a retro inspire line, and then how you like a bunch of other MX cherry switches… maybe I skipped over it but I could ready anything on the orange in the first few paragraphs of a review on these actual switches

10

u/uchigaytana Vintage Blacks Jul 21 '24

Did you try scrolling to the part that says "MX Orange Performance"?

17

u/AJ_ninja Jul 21 '24

I got to the MX “jailhouse” blues and said why do I still know. Nothing about MX oranges… why do you write that much before starting the actual review I feel like I know so much more about other switches than MX Orange

1st review to read yes. It’s gonna be the last…

Ok

Imagine not reading the review and then being mad you didn’t read the info in the review.

16

u/Herny_ Jul 22 '24

To be fair I figured the other commenter was exaggerating, but it’s insane to have to get nearly 3,000 words into a “review” before you actually get to the part that talks about the product they’re reviewing. The whole thing was just kinda self-indulgent and could have used some cleaning up for the readers’ sake.

u/ajrc0re Jul 22 '24

go to this github and look at the raw data spreadsheet if you dont want the fluff. He literally has a facts only abridges numerical review pdf of all of his articles right on the github. Why would you go to the longest form version of his content just to complain about it being long form despite the shortform review existing AND the data only spreadsheet also existing?

6

u/Herny_ Jul 22 '24

Because I can enjoy a written review while also thinking that essentially mashing two articles together, with the article’s namesake coming second, isn’t great writing form?

u/Herny_ Jul 22 '24

Brother, I’m just saying that the other commenter has a point that this was weirdly written. It could’ve been two separate articles, and both would’ve been more coherent for it. It’s not like I’m screaming into a void, I’m just posting feedback for the dude who originally wrote it… don’t know why on earth that’s got you so sour.

u/ajrc0re Jul 22 '24

as someone who regularly reads ThereminGoat's content, this article didnt seem unusual in any way. Imagine going to like episode 600 of a web comic and critiquing it for the basic stuff its been doing week after week for years.

I’m not mad, I just didn’t like the structure of the article, it is alright if you want to add other things or go off topic, but that should be later on in the article. If you’re going to mention other switches maybe instead of writing a paragraph about it just write 1-2 sentences and put a link in the article to those reviews.

I believe the OP is super insightful in the products in this hobby, and I would like to know his thoughts but I want to review to be more meat and potatoes instead of non-related fluff….if there is a TLDR that should be at the top.

I know nothing about the switch after reading the article

Then you didn't read it, because it's all in there.

Scroll down to MX Orange Performance. Goat's articles are always like this. The first paragraph is basically a blog catching up with what's he's been up to since the last article, or other tangential news. Then there's a contextual piece, usually about the history of the switch and other switches that led to the development of the review switch... a bit of community background, history, or lore etc. Then he dives into the switch review proper. It's called long-form journalism, and apparently it's a dying art in an age where people's attention span is that of a fruit fly. Just use the bold, massive subheadings to skip to parts you are more interested in. You're behaving as if he's abused you or something ;)

Thank you for this review, I find it so fascinating what other people think of these switches, but compared to the long poles (which I can't stand) and the old standard of MX switches, which I can't stand the sound profile of. I like 4mm travel switches and out of all the cherry switches out there, the MX2A switches sound and feel the best. And the orange switches are at the top for me. I know that as I break them in, they will sound and feel even better. I have a break in machine, so my next set will go through that before I use them. I have a feeling that will push them to the top of my list of switches. Again, thank you for the review. Good read!

Cool review, worth the read with a bit of history walkthrough.

Dear reddit users

Has anyone encountered problems with MX2A Orange breaking ABS keycap stem?

2

u/unipanic Sep 12 '24

Not yet, I have them in a couple of builds and both with GMK keycaps. No issues.

1

u/AethelEthel Sep 12 '24

Thanks for the information

just get mx2a blacks. Smoother than orange and you don't have to deal with the awful lube* job

EDIT: I own plenty of both so I definitely know what I am talking about

13

u/ssaem Jul 21 '24

These MX Oranges are also MX2A, meaning they're exactly the same as MX2A Blacks just with a recoloured stem and a lighter spring. The smoothness and lube job between the two will be, on average, exactly the same.

-30

u/fnv_fan Jul 21 '24

I know they're also mx2a but the blacks are smoother and the factory lube job isn't as bad.

11

u/OutlandishnessTop521 Jul 21 '24

Same lube process, same machines, same everything.

-18

u/fnv_fan Jul 21 '24

No, it's not. My oranges are overlubed compared to my mx2a blacks. All oranges had too much lube on the springs and there was even lube on the stem poles. My blacks are completely fine.

5

u/OutlandishnessTop521 Jul 22 '24

Ok. That's called batch variance. My statement still stands.

u/fnv_fan Jul 22 '24

1st of May on CandyKeys and 24th of June on KPRepublic. Their shitty QC seems to be pretty consistent between batches.
