It's a mess for sure, he wants the better relationship with Roddick he's been building and this is a good step. His and Rowley's interests are also genuinely diverging as they grow up, it's not hard to see this as a choice between who he was and who he wants to be.
But that doesn't mean he isn't being a jerk to his friend.

Oh dear...I wonder if any of the relationships in DP can be fixable besides Greg and Rodrick themselves...I hope Greg could work in his favor in this one. Merry Christmas!
EDIT: I just remembered that Greg and Rodrick's relationship had turned out to be somewhat workable in DP. It's just that if anyone else besides Greg and Rodrick that could work out with either of the two if anyone has a similar perspective in DP.

I feel so bad for Greg and Rowley honestly. Greg is missing the social context to invite Rowley even though he's right, Rowley probably wouldn't like Rodrick's band. Rowley feels pushed away by his crush, poor kid

Even if Rowley confesses to Greg what he feels, I doubt it will happen or that they will end up being more than friends. And still, Greg wouldn't be the best boyfriend in a relationship, if his relationship with his best friend is already getting fucked up, I doubt Greg and his unlikely relationship is good or worth it for Rowley.
