It isn’t that complicated. They hate immigrants and trans people more than they want progressive policies. Had Harris run on stopping dirty brown immigrants from eating the pets, and denying the existence of trans people in addition to progressive policies she would have won. The fact is for many voting Americans racism, xenophobia, and bigotry are more important for them than their own wellbeing.

She did run pretty rightward on immigration. But you can't hope to out-xenophobe someone like Trump.

Wh-what? She famously failed to energize her base after shifting rightwards socially

This base doesn’t exist. It’s a figment of liberal imagination. Trump represents the real face of America. He gave them the freedom to hate. This problem is that today if you put up a candidate that is unacceptable to the racists and bigots you can’t win. To capture some of that public you need to have a straight, white, Christian, male as your candidate. This was the problem. Look at how many companies are rushing to abandon their social initiatives and roll back the clock. This is the true America whether we want to accept it or not.

The voters approve of progressive policies so much so they elected a guy who will only accelerate the privatization of American lives to elites.
