It's still not supposed to come off though

It is how you remove the scracth panel, put a suction cup to it and pull. They aren't screwed in or anything. They are also removed and changed very often and easily. They are there to prevent idiots from scracthing the actual glass behind the scratch panel. Because you will always have idiots or kids that try to destroy things.

Also, kids pull apart strength is stronger than most people think. Even in the womb, those little shits can produce up to ten pounds of strength from kicking.

Now they gotta blast the rocky theme and eye of the tiger with a speaker next to the baby belly.

She's gonna knock out Rhonda Rousey

u/drajne Aug 20 '24

… Hope this isn’t how you started your relationship with your own daughters mother?

Should've kicked back. Establish dominance.

Very same reason why in busses and subways etc. these days you commonly have a protective film on the windows.

Cleaning is all the same, but you don't have to actually change the whole panel if someone on accident or purpose damages them on small scale.

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

The second pane is also used for pressure management purpose within the cabin and as a backup if the outer pane fails for some reason

That shocked me when I had my first kid, how damn STRONG a baby/toddler can be.

1

u/suicideskin Aug 20 '24

They can break ribs and bruise organs too.

1

u/Coliniscolin Aug 20 '24

How many layers of glass are behind the scratch panel?

0

u/JaffaCakeStockpile Aug 20 '24

But... If it's there to protect something from kids, should it not offer some level of resilience vs a kid..?

u/Direct-Serve-9489 Aug 20 '24

Why not? Pulling on it with a suction cup might be the intended way of removing it.

-16

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

If so, why not a screw or clip instead?

13

u/Ping-and-Pong Aug 20 '24

Ease of removal? Cost of putting it in? Weight? I mean there'll be hundreds of these on just one small commercial passenger plane. For something not structurally integral, why go to the effort and cost when some plastic clips work fine if not better if they need removing regularly? Works for a laptop case or phone screen - why not a protective cover for a plane window?

u/IndependentSubject90 Aug 20 '24

Aesthetics is the answer. You will see almost no visible screws on the cabin of an airplane. Or even a car. Designers keep screws and other hardware away from customers eyes.

4

u/Just_Acanthaceae_253 Aug 20 '24

And safety, too. Covering a screw means less chance of someone messing with it.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

I'm just thinking how easy it would be to for some jerk to steal these now that it's out there.

2

u/IndependentSubject90 Aug 20 '24

That’s why there’s fight attendants on every flight. They’ll see someone pulling off windows and trying to stash it in their bag lol.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '24

Maybe. But it'd be a lot harder if there was a clip or screw.

12

u/MR_DIG Aug 20 '24

It is, that's how you remove it

25

u/BreeBree214 Aug 20 '24

It is absolutely supposed to come off with a tool like a suction cup. That's how you replace them when they are scratched or broken

2

u/flintb033 Aug 20 '24

Can confirm. I am the suction cup.

7

u/trotski94 Aug 20 '24

What do you mean? It's literally meant to come off to be able to access that glass behind and replace easily if damaged? Why are so many people in here just acting like its some catastrophic failure when they have no clue?

8

u/shifty_coder Aug 20 '24

Yes it is. That whole panel is removable. The interior window covering is also removable/replaceable, so that they can replace it without having to replace the entire panel.

3

u/Pretend_Spray_11 Aug 20 '24

Covers are actually designed to be removed.

6

u/blacksnowredwinter Aug 20 '24

It is. How else would they get to the actual glass.

3

u/TeamRedundancyTeam Aug 20 '24

229 upvotes for a baseless assumption that is incorrect. If that isn't the perfect example of everything wrong with misinformation on social media I don't know what is.

1

u/TheRealCovertCaribou Aug 20 '24

Especially when anyone who has been on a plane could tell you that those plastic windows on the inside have little holes in them to to prevent them from from fogging up on the inside.

8

u/wafflezcoI Aug 20 '24

Maybe not but it’s there so the actual window isnt damaged

1

u/ATXBeermaker Aug 20 '24

That's literally what it's supposed to do.

1

u/Scrambo Aug 20 '24

Just gonna pile on here and let you know it is definitely supposed to come off.

1

u/Dorkamundo Aug 20 '24

Yes, yes it is. Literally intended to be replaced whenever it becomes scratched.

1

u/RenderedCreed Aug 20 '24

It absolutely is and a suction cup is how you would do it to change it

1

u/tobimai Aug 20 '24

Yes it is. It has to be removed for maintenance etc.

1

u/mike9184 Aug 20 '24

Source: I made it the fuck up.

1

u/hotrodruby Aug 20 '24

Yes, it quite literally is supposed to come off. That's how they're changed when they're scratched or otherwise damaged.

Don't talk about shit you don't know.

1

u/EnergyTakerLad Aug 20 '24

Well it's not supposed to have a suction cup attached to it then yanked on either. Ive never put thought into it but I'm sure they're relatively easy to pop off since there's usually no reason it'd happen accidently.

1

u/Tarqee224 Aug 20 '24

It obviously is supposed to come off of if a baby with a suction cup can do it.

1

u/Dangerous-Part-4470 Aug 21 '24

Yes, it is. You see the sidewalls surrounding that glass? Those are supposed to come off, too. They aren't permanently attached. There's wire bundles, airframe structures, and skin of the aircraft that are all scheduled for regular inspections and maintenance.

1

u/IEatBooty12369 Aug 22 '24

It’s literally supposed to come off that way

0

u/IndependentMassive38 Aug 20 '24

No it is though.
