Profile of Gillian Yorke in the Halifax Examiner

https://www.halifaxexaminer.ca/government/elections/first-time-ndp-candidate-profile-gillian-yorke/

Great article about Gillian Yorke in the Halifax Examiner. Nice to see this riding get attention from news outlets from the city, and to highlight that she's running a great campaign against a powerful incumbent.

First post, so apologies if it's not formatted correctly.

Gillian would be a great choice for Kings North. That's who I'm voting for!

Are you still paying for it? I thought they were done? Or did they just end local reporting?

They do still do some local reporting, but it's largely election related. Not sure what the status will be after the election.

They’re all about local reporting. I think you’re confusing them with saltwire…?

Yup. Saltwire is what I meant. It appears my comment didn't post as a reply to the comment within the thread as I meant it to. Confusing and I can't navigate now to @ the person I meant to reply to. 🤦🏽‍♀️ At least not right now. And I'll likely forget by tomorrow.

I think you meant to reply to me, I still pay for saltwire, they are still in business and doing local reporting.

Between no online voting and no voter card, it's gonna such a low turnout. Hoping that means good things for yorke

Yeh it's a pay for site. They take a fair amount out from behind the paywall. Covid, items surrounding the Mass Casualties event (and hearings etc.), some other environmental related bits.

Honestly, I pay the low income/student rate and I feel I get more than what I pay for. With so much mainstream media and news sites cutting their journalists and reporters ...or going completely bankrupt, I think it's important to support the folks doing great work when I can. Plus, more often than not, they are the first to break things that sometimes the big corp media wouldn't touch because it could negatively impact shareholders.

I wish I could do more or pay a regular rate, but my income is mostly seasonal and crap.

I completely understand.

I pay for saltwire because I like the content.

Why should ad-free reporting be free to you?

3

u/redilyntoriami Nov 18 '24

I didn't say it should be?

Fair enough.
